Summary: Lightweight but (and) enjoyable
Review: At about 176 small and well-spaced pages, this is no candidate for the Great American Novel, nor would it seem that it was meant to be. It serves its purpose well, however, as a page-turning and occasionally witty take on the American obsession with the externals of Christmas.The ending may be a bit overly O. Henryish (or "Capraesque") but I enjoyed the few hours I spent on it and was happy to loan it to other members of the family.

Review: I read this book over two days, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very charming and quite funny. Classic "how fast can gossip sweep through the neighborhood" and it reminds me of my town. Be sure to pick this one up. It will surely put you in the holiday spirit.

Review: An extremely funny look at how Christmas really has gotten out of hand. It makes you think of how much you really spend on gifts and that perfect outfit for the holiday office party. Luther and Nora are the typical couple who decide to skip Christmas and take a cruise. A real pick me up in light of recent events and it is laugh out loud funny. A great gift for the hard to buy for person. Even if you are not an avid reader let this be the first book you have read in years. A very quick read at 175 pages you can read it in one sitting. If you are traveling for Thanksgiving, get the CD verssion for your road trip. That's what I am doing for my parents. A real change for Grisham who usually rights legal drama. What a perfect book for the holiday season........I have to go shopping now......BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: You can think of skipping Christmas but don't skip this book
Review: John Grisham did a great job on this book. I'm not a big fan of novel reading but John Grisham's books change my mind and even make me like reading even more. At first, I thought this book was some kind of adventurous story like the Testament. Although it's not, I love it still. This book is very heart felt and funny at the same time, something you'd want to share with people you love. I don't regret that I rang up many bookshops in my area and in the city to find out whether they had it in the store. Luckily, a bookshop in the city has them in stock so I travelled all the way in a cold weather to get it and finished it overnight. I feel very good when I think about Skipping Christmas story and the Krank :) Try it!

Review: I couldn't get past the premise of this book. There is a world outside of celebrating Christmas, without taking cruises, or getting your feet wet and cursing white chocolate. I'm sure there must have been some Wassermans or Feinsteins in the neighborhood who were likewise not displaying the huge Frosty on their rooves. Since I never believed the premise, much of the humor eluded me. I suppose Grisham could be using the Kranks (Yiddish word, that, by the way) to symbolize the psychic pressure some people feel to be "merry" at this time of year whether they feel so or not, so the literal compulsion is merely a metaphor; if so, though, it escaped me. Instead of getting mauled at the mall and the grocery store right before Christmas, most of us non-participants plan ahead, and stay away from all shopping venues the week or so before. It seemed to me that the inevitable magnetism of Christmas was not some mystic power, but the result of poor planning. So why did I read the book? The title was appealing-- I don't "skip" Christmas, in my mind: it's just another day. I thought a book about people tossing away the hype and trying to rediscover quietude, which even for non-celebrants is hard to find the more hassled and harried your co-workers get, would be nice. Instead I had Rebel without a Candy Cane-- which is another thing: Luther Krank is thoroughly unlikable. Perhaps if I had liked him I would have had an easier time suspending my disbelief through this outlandish premise. I doubt it, though.

Summary: Skipping This Book
Review: amazon.com reviewers are urged not to be "Spoilers! Please don't reveal crucial plot elements." No need on John's Grisham's failed attempt to write a little Christmas story. The plot may be summed up in three words, predictable, predictable, predictable. Its a slim volume, but it could have been summed up in a half dozen sentences or a short story. This is a disappointing effort from an author who has in the past kept me up at night because I could not bear to put down his latest book. Even his last, "A Painted House," contained sufficient surprises to make me forget I was being inconvenienced by airport delays and cancelled flights. Unless you're a reader who wishes to be able to display "everything Grisham ever wrote" in hardcover on your bookshelf, read this one at the library.
