Summary: worst!
Review: I have high respect for Grisham but the he may want to be just writting legal fiction. I am frustrated as I do not see any story or any point to the whole book. I mean the plot is absurd, ending predictable from the very first page and characters are way too out of reality.

Disappionted and I am wondering if I am going to ever get a legal fiction out of Grisham!

Thanks

Summary: quick read, felt like a short story
Review: I've never read any of Grisham's other novels. However, it was due to Grisham's "bankable" name (as one reviewer pointed out) that I even noticed this book at all. The story is very well written and the characters' ideosyncracies add a touch of realism. The main character's frustrations about Christmas and the cost it involves ring a bell. (I would love to "skip" a christmas.) When I read this book, I somehow felt as if it were one of O Henry's short stories. Maybe it's just me. But if you want a quick escape for a few hours on some light reading, then this is a good book for you.

On another level, I'm not sure if this novel tries to teach a lesson (if at all). I'm Catholic, and to me, it's trying to say that if I were to pause and reflect a while I'd have realized that a lot of what we do in the name of tradition has no connection to the birth of Christ 2000 years ago. Or maybe this novel has a motivational purpose. It tells you to treat your neighbors (people all around you) right because you never know when you'll need their help.

Summary: A wonderful Christmas romp
Review: I like to read and watch everything about Christmas. I could not imagine however, that a book by John Grisham could be this entertaining on the subject of Christmas.

Each page is filled with fun and and enjoyment. I have felt the way the main character does at some time in my life and I am sure many of the readers of this book will have had these feelings. I have a great deal of admiration for his attitude and his determination.

Those whose choose this book with have a wonderful time. The spirit of Christmas lives in this book. Have a Merry Christmas time reading this tale.

Summary: Drek
Review: This is one of the most irritating books I have ever read. It is completely without artistry, totally predictable, and packed with the kind of characters that make life in America seem hopeless and embarrassing.
It is a depressing and shallow book. No wonder our children don't bother to learn to read or write. Why bother? Might as well just go see a movie. Buy a good meal or a house plant instead of this book.

Summary: this book is hilarious!
Review: O.K., Grisham is my favorite author. So I didn't read "A Painted House", but I got the first chapter by e-mail as I always do before his books are released, & it just didn't grab me. I'm sure one day I'll give it a chance because I love the way J.G. writes. You should get a kick out of this! As usual, Grisham's grasp of human idiosyncracy makes for some great moments. I saw in a review in the newspaper where they're saying Luther belongs with Scrooge & the Grinch. A new holiday classic that everyone should try this season! If Mr. Grisham would allow it, this would make for a great new holiday movie classic as well. Can't wait for "The Summons"!

Summary: Skipping Christmas
Review: I was wondering how John Grisham was going to twist this family's desire to skip Christmas into an amusing tale. I laughed out loud while reading all the humorous details of throwing it all together at the last minute. Even those of us who plan everything to death can appreciate the frantic rush of Christmas and how there is just NEVER enough time before the big day.

An easy read. No lawyers or courtrooms. I nice change for this author!

Summary: A nice afternoon read
Review: Luther and Nora Krank's only child has gone to Peru with the Peace Corps. Luther decides that the $6,000 they normally spend on Christmas might be better spent on a $3,000 cruise for the two of them. After convincing his wife that they should "skip
Christmas" all hell breaks loose. While some admire his decision, others find it quite disturbing. There are some twists and turns, a few chuckles and a few tears. It was an
enjoyable 2-3 hour read. (...)

Summary: The Irony Of It All
Review: I give this 5 stars. Not because it's a Grisham masterpiece. It's so shallow. I flew threw it in a few hours. If you enjoy inspirational stories presented in a framework along the lines of "It's A Wonderful Life" or "A Christmas Carol", but not shallow like "Skipping Christmas", I recommend that you also read "West Point" by Norman Thomas Remick. I say "also" because Grisham is always worth reading -- even if he tries to forget about this one after he deposits all that money in the bank thanks to those who buy anything at Christmas. Meanwhile, I myself give "Skipping Christmas" 5 stars because of how clever Grisham is. His motive for the book is the exact antithesis of the storyline. He cleverly recognized the irony of it all. Do you?

Summary: An easy read; a cute story
Review: It's not mind-bending, it's not earth shattering. It's just a sweet little story about a couple, Nora and Luther Krank, who decide to rebel against the commercialism of Christmas. I didn't see the ending coming at all (I'm apparently slow, as well), so it was a nice surprise. This book is an easy read, even for someone like me, who doesn't do a lot of reading. I'd recommend it -- in fact, I did recommend it to a total stranger, just today.

Summary: Hilarious, still giggling 2 weeks later
Review: This book is off the beaten track for Grisham and I was leary at first. This book had me giggling from beginning to end. Light reading for a break. Grab the hot chocolate, sit by the fire and get ready to thoroughly enjoy the book. Couldn't put it down until I was finished with it.
