Rating: Summary: Skip this one Review: I couldn't help suspecting that there was an underlying mean-spiritedness about this short novel. The characters evoke not a single emotion and the overall feeling is flat. There are better stories about Christmas, both happy and sad. Skipping Christmas isn't one I'll read again.
Rating: Summary: The best book for Christmas!! Review: I saw this book and thought "Skipping Christmas" who would want to do that and who would want to read about it. But I ordered this book and started reading it one afternoon and was laughing. It is so funny. I couldn't wait to finish the book. The characters are so good and Mr. Krank is so funny.....a typical man at Christmastime. He comes up with a great reason to skip Christmas and a trip that most people only dream about. Then at the last minute those great plans come to a halt and he has to rethink his great plan. And in the middle of it he gets himself caught up in the whole Christmas festivities that we all love. (he literally does). I was so "sad" when I finsihed reading it. Everyone thinks of not decorating or getting caught in all the crowds, but only John Grisham could make it so funny. I hope he writes another one like this one. Everyone can relate to this book! A must read for the Holiday season... especially after a shopping trip in the crowds. I liked it so much that I'm sending it to my mom.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas-Would make an excellent holiday movie Review: We have all felt the same way the main character feels at Christmas time so when I picked this book up I expected the same old story about a scrooge, but with in just a few pages I was laughing out loud. I read this book aloud to my husband and children and they too were laughing along with all the funny antics this gentleman gets into. I would like to see this book be made into a holiday movie, it would be my favorite to watch. I have since passed this book on to friends but when it is returned to me I will absoultly read it again.
Rating: Summary: A Holiday Parable Review: John Grisham delivers a humorous Christmas parable, ending with a thoughtful message on the true meaning of the season in "Skipping Christmas." The Kranks decide not to celebrate Christmas in a neighborhood obsessed with the yultide season. This delivers a great deal of tension and angst for all. The character are larger than life. The author pokes fun at most holiday traditions and excesses. The reader sorts through all of the chaos until a very satisfying ending. This reader continues to enjoy Grisham's detours from legal thrillers. The balance helps me better appreciate all aspects of his work.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: Laughing out loud at the situation the main character gets himself into, I found myself identifying with his disdain of the commercialism of the holidays, yet lacking the courage to do anything about it as he tries to do. I couldn't put it down. To be perfectly honest, (and perhaps blasphemous) I tend not to read Grisham's works knowing they are likely to be made into movies in short order. Now I may actually forge ahead and read his next novel before it makes it to celluloid. Total chuckles.
Rating: Summary: A Jolly Ol'Read by gifted storyteller John Grisham! Review: 'ROTFLMAO' (roughly translated rolling on the floor laughing my -- - off!) What an entertainingly funny story by this gifted storyteller! After Luther and Nora Kranks daughter Blair is shipped off to Peru with the Peace Corp Luther decides to shun Christmas and save himself a lot of cash-- he decides to take his wife on a 10 day Caribbean cruise instead of getting involved with all the commercialism associated with the traditional Christmas of today. When his clicky neighbors discover Luther's humbug reason for skipping the festive Holiday Season they all ban together to try and get him to change his mind and his new-found approach to the Christmas Season. A jolly sort've read by one of my favorite writers!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I expected another John Grisham mystery. Instead I found a predictable and ridiculous short story whose sole purpose seems to be to generate holiday related sales.
Rating: Summary: Grisham has quite the sense of humor! Review: I was quite surprised by Grisham's ability to create hilarious word pictures in this amusing and sensitive little novel. Those who are used to Grisham's legal thrillers will find that this is an amazing departure from his previous books, giving the reader a mega-dose of humor and quite convincing marital dialogue. It is a quick, satisfying read that looks into the lives of a middle-aged couple who decide to "skip Christmas" and go on a cruise. The resulting chaos is surprising and funny, catapulting the reader toward a wonderful message of good will to all, which is what Christmas is all about. I found this such an entertaining read - laughing out loud in some parts! I highly recommend it for a shot of good cheer!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: I'm not a John Grisham fan, and I bought Skipping Christmas because it was only 177 pages long and on sale. But this is funnier than the Bridget Jones books. I laughed out loud several times while reading Skipping Christmas. The only thing I did not like was the stuff about Peruvian skin color.
Rating: Summary: Bah, Humbug! Review: Unoriginal, formulaic, its a quick holiday read that isn't the worst I've ever seen, but it's certainly not the best. I disliked the characters from the opening chapter and never felt they ever rose above one dimension. As a minority, I was horrified at the shallowness of the characters when they fervently hoped their daughter's friend "wasn't dark." What? Good news. Later it was determined he "wasn't dark at all, in fact he was lighter than they were!" What a relief. And what dreck.
