Rating: Summary: A Big Disappointment Review: Skipping Christmas is well-written and has a few amusing moments. Nevertheless, I was disappointed in the book. A more obnoxious group of characters I never hope to meet, with the possible exception of Luther himself. (His daughter and her boyfriend are nice, but they only appear at the very end of the story). Nora is totally disgusting. How could any man stay married to her? And the shallow stupidity of the neighbors! Even the woman with cancer is unsympathetic. Luther should have skipped the whole lot of them and joined his daughter in the Peace Corps.
Rating: Summary: Don't let the title fool you.... Review: This book should have been titled, Thinking About Skipping Christmas, or something to that effect. Anyone, like myself, who is reading this book for some kind of statement about the commercialization and exploitation of the holiday, should look elsewhere because it just isn't going to happen here...although every indication is given that that is what this book is about, including the title. There are a lot of comparisions to It's A Wonderful Life, but at least IAWL gave you a plausible reason for the sappily happy ending. No such luck with this one. Something happens, which is revealed by other reviewers, and everything the story has been building up to for the entire first half of the book goes out the window. Aside from the main character, who apparently is married to some twisted version of Peg Bundy, there is no one in this story, in terms of characters, that is really portrayed as having any redeemable qualities. There is a gluttony of neighbors that would make the Hatfields and McCoys cringe. Do yourself a favor, reread A Christmas Carol or The Christmas Box, rather than investing the 2 hours it takes to read this terrible excuse for a Christmas book. The only thing worse than the book is the fact that it nearly costs the same a regularbook I could have bought.
Rating: Summary: made for tv movie! Review: I enjoyed the story. It started out a little slow ...seemed alot like reading..."The Christmas Carol", but midway into the book it really took off. I laughed at every turn of the page until the end! Would make a great 'made for TV' movie!
Rating: Summary: Funny Review: I thought this book was very funny. Just what is needed for a good laugh this season. I hope he writes more!!
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: It is a wonderful and actually very funny Christmas Story which you won't want to put it down once you reach chpt. 11/12. I had to pass it on to my relatives so they could enjoy this fun loving story. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Holidays!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: This was a very enjoyable book, and I liked it a lot. It is relatively short which is nice because you can get through it quickly and move onto another book. The story was very entertaining and can get you in the Christmas spirit. About three quarters of the way through the book, I thought I was not going to like the ending; however, the ending turned out to be wonderful and very heartwarming. The book can remind us all of the true meaning of Christmas.
Rating: Summary: An Important Lesson Review: I do agree with another reviewer that the literary sophisticaion does not measure up to Dickens, but this book is a quick, easy, yet enjoyable read. Although taking a cruise to run away from Christmas stress and expenses may seem appealing, the story makes one realize that selfishness does not bring joy to anyone, even a vain couple such as this Mr. Krank and his weak-willed wife. Christmas can become quite expensive each year, but the solution to the this problem is not to cut expenses in half and spend half that sum on oneself, as the writer shows in this beautiful story. The string of people whose appeals the selfish couple rudely and obstinately ignores extends over many pages. Nothing moves them, however, except another selfish motive. The impact of this book can be not only on how one views Christmas but all of life. God's perfect Word teaches, "It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35)."
Rating: Summary: The True Meaning Of Christmas Review: First, this is definitely not your normal John Grisham book, but equally excellent, and a great read. The Kranks' daughter Blair is going to Peru with the Peace Corps, so she won't be home for Christmas. Luther being fed up with the whole holiday season convinces his wife, Nora, to just skip Christmas. They'll leave on a cruise on Christmas day, and won't have to deal with presents, trees, crowds, parties, shopping. None of it. It seems like a great idea until the backlash starts. The Kranks are tormented by carolers every night, and bothered by their neighbors for not decorating their house. Then they find out Blair is coming home with her new fiance. Luther and Nora have 6 hours to get everything together or Christmas truly will be ruined. But, with the help of their neighbors, and the spirit of Christmas everything works out perfectly. This book truly shows how commercial Christmas has become, but also the true meaning of friendship, love, and hardwork. The holiday season can be wonderful if you just remember that the true meaning of Christmas isn't how many presents you receive, but about family, friends, and love. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that will get you into the holiday spirit this Christmas
Rating: Summary: Don't skip this book! Review: Well woven tell of a couple's attempts to escape the ratrace and commerical tensel of another Christmas season! Grisham abandons his legal motif and strides off into this short novel (this reviewer read it in two brief settings) which in his tight, clear writing style, touches so many veins that we all have at the busy, holiday season ---- trudging around in weather, the commercialness getting to us --- all the time missing the blessings that can come when we let them. Great choice of name to the main character, Luther. I enjoyed this and will make use of it in my Christmas preaching. There is a good story here, one that can be shared, enjoyed and related at many levels of understanding and application.
Rating: Summary: A modern Magi gift Review: I read this book while waiting for a plane. I couldn't stop turning the pages. We have all had secret thoughts of skipping Christmas, or at least its madness, at least once. Although the actions may be predictable, the ending is not and once again the heart of Scrooge is melted. What a great Christmas gift book and should be one everyone's list who overdoses on Christmas madness.
