Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: I have been a John Grisham fan for years. I have every book he has written but this the best. It is a quick read here in the hustle and bustle of Christmas leaving you with lasting thoughts and bringing back memories of calmer, quieter times when all we had to do was wait for Santa. The humor made for out-loud laughter and the somber moments brought a tear or two. There truly is a reason for tradition with a few less extremes.
Rating: Summary: The Reindeer Brief Review: Sorry John, but if an aspiring writer had approached Doubleday with this novella, it would never have been published. Skipping Christmas is a lightweight effort at best--mildly amusing, but seemingly ripped off the word processor in a hurry. The premise is cute, if not original: Children have left home, and parent decides to avoid the Christmas rush and take a cruise instead of spending a small fortune on gifts, cards, and Christmas parties. But child announces a surprise return home, bringing a friend....Hey, wait a minute, that's the plot from an old Muppets Christmas Special! After reading Skipping Christmas I resented the "star power" that dominates the current book market. If you're inclined to cut down on Christmas spending, don't fork over (money)for this book.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: I laughed...and isn't it a wonderful life to be able to do that. It wasn't a deep story, it wasn't rocket science, it was just a fun book to read. And couldn't we all recognize some of the materialistic rituals that have become a part of Christmas that we all despise and wish we could say "No, we're skipping Christmas this year". I may do that next year...and hopefully I make the cruise.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful & Funny Christmas Tale Review: Not a typical Grisham novel (don't bother looking for the lawyers). I couldn't stop laughing on my DC to SF flight. When I got back I read it to my family and we all had a wonderful time. A hellava funny Christmas tale. Everyone knows someone like the Kranks and many of their neighbors on Hemlock. It's funny, yet has some Grisham-esque twists as Luther and Nora battle the Christmas craziness head-on, and each other. There's a very positive message of what Christmas is, and the whole family will enjoy this one. Buy it, read it, you'll love it!
Rating: Summary: I laughed out loud as I read this book Review: I read this book over the weekend and thought it was great. It really takes a look at the way we have commercialized Christmas. I laughed out loud over the characters in the book and could relate to the way we create stress for ourselves during the holidays. The book is fun, don't try to make too much of it. It is great to read during the holiday season. Make sure you finish it...it will help you remember what is important in life!
Rating: Summary: There is only 1 reason to read this book Review: I have read all of John Grisham's books. That is the only reason I would give anyone else to read this one. Luckily it was short and a very easy read. I did not find it entertaining, fun, interesting, or anything else. In fact, I was going to buy it for a friend who is a Grisham fan. Was is the operative word. I have not given up on Grisham, I will read his next book.
Rating: Summary: I laughed until I cried! Review: Who *hasn't* felt the way Luther and Nora Krank feel when they decide to sit this Christmas out? Identification with that feeling immediately connects you to the main characters of this charming, outrageously funny book. The societal pressures the Kranks have to face in their quest for a non-holiday holiday are those that, while made larger for the sake of fiction, we all face when deviating from the norm. More subtly, I imagine Grisham has illuminated what it must feel like to be one of the small groups of Americans who don't celebrate Christmas *any* year. I dare not say more lest I give away any of the plot of this absolutely terrific book. Just read it, you'll love it -- as long as you're looking for something fun. This book is not meant to be great literary fiction. It is a light-hearted Christmas tale with a sappy ending. (Would you really want anything different for a Christmas story?) It's a quick read (I read it in two hours) and laugh-out-loud funny. I actually laughed myself to tears reading this book -- a first for me! I highly recommend this tale as a respite from the stresses of the holidays -- perhaps while waiting to get on a plane to your holiday destination!
Rating: Summary: Hello May I Speak to Frosty ~ Ha! Ha! Review: The Kranks decided to skip Christmas this year ~ this decision turned out to be a very bad decision for them. They thought they were saving money, time and stress by doing this but they paid the price two times over for this. The book was humorous and had it's funny moments, especially when someone called the Krank's house and asked to speak with Frosty! I gave it three stars, I was in a rush to read it ~ I guess because it was by John Grisham, ....
Rating: Summary: Not a typical Grisham Novel! Review: Unlike Grisham's usual books..no murder..no mystery.. just a humorous, feel good Christmas book! Great characters and a plot we can identify with. A good holiday read. I enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: Tired of ignorance too! Review: I was enjoying this book as a light holiday read with a character who I and anyone else tired of the commercialism of Christmas can relate to. I was enjoying it right until the end when the protagonist and his wife express their relief that their future son-in-law, though Peruvian, "isn't that dark". As a person of color I am more than double fed up with people thinking that it's just a-ok to look down on people like me. Luther Krank after all he went through to regain his Christmas spirit, still proved himself to be a narrow minded bigot in the end. Shame on John Grisham for even putting that ignorant thought in the book! That bit of stupidity ruined an otherwise fun book for me and will definitely keep me from purchasing it as Christmas gifts for others as I had planned too.
