Summary: Fun Read
Review: This is the perfect book to escape with. There is just to much reality these days and this is the perfect cure. At one point in the book(no I will not say when) I was laughing so hard I was crying. I can't remember the last time that happened. I would recommed this book for a quick, fast, fun read.

Summary: This is not a good book
Review: I expected a light read, but did not expect to be annoyed by this book! There are many reasons why someone would choose (or wish) to skip Christmas, and many reasons why it would be almost impossible in our culture. Grisham, however (or whoever wrote this, it isn't up to Grisham standards), only considers one (the materialistic excesses) and sets his scenes with a cartoon-like quality. The first half is entertaining, but both the author and the character cave in to society's expectations, falling flat in attempts to express something about the "real meaning of Christmas." I was hoping this book might expand on the idea that there are as many expressions of the "real meaning" as there are Christians, and illustrate how one man searched for his own. Alas.... Maybe next year.

Summary: Skipping Christmas
Review: What an enjoyable read. John Grisham has put into words the feelings that we all have at some time during Christmas, the things we dare not say out loud. I expected this book to resemble the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and there were a few references to humbugs. However I was pleasantly surprised by the way the story unfolded and the very heart warming end. This book could be turned into one of those tear jerking, feel good Christmas movies. I hope it is.

Summary: A fun book!
Review: Who hasn't wanted to skip Christmas? I know I have. This is a must read for the holiday season. This book hits the nail on the head...Most of our holiday traditions are meant to make other people happy, not ourselves. I truly enjoyed this book.

Summary: Not his usual
Review: This book is not one of Grisham's usual. It's very light and quick reading. It's funny and a joy to read at this time of year....Highly Recommended.

Summary: Irritating & predictable, but kind of sweet at the very end
Review: I like John Grisham, and, while not deep or probing, his stories are fast paced, interesting, and entertaining. Also, he usually does a pretty good job of character development. This short book had a couple of humorous lines and a lot of annoying situations. You already know from other reviews that it is predictable but who cares if it's fun along the way. This is not fun! In fact, it is so often irritating that I had to frequently get away from it. This 177-page book took forever to finish. Luther and Nora have so little respect for each other that the prospect of them spending 10 days on a cruise ship together is horrifying. The daughter, Blair, is simply a self-centered spoiled brat, even though she is described as being "loved by everyone." The neighborhood sounds like a place that anyone with more than a two-digit IQ would run from. None of it makes sense. The final (and predictable) act in the book is sweet, however, but definitely not worth the work.

Summary: Skipping Christmas is a very entertaining read!
Review: I so enjoyed reading this one and I am not an avid fan of John Grisham. This was funny and I couldn't wait to get back home, from my Christmas shopping sprees, to pick it back up again. I didn't want it to come to an end. I dare anyone to read this and not be just a little bit tempted to do the same thing that Luther wanted to do. I'm still considering it myself for next year. Don't hesitate to buy this one and get an extra one to give as a present. It's good for many laughs and the story wraps up well. Just a little Christmas humor there.
Grisham may want to consider writing comedy for a while. I read somewhere that odds are this one will be a made-for-televison movie by next year. Merry Christmas readers!!

Summary: Skipping Grisham!
Review: OK. This HAS to be the WORST book ever. Luther and his wife Nora (wealthy Arian Christians) have decided to skip Christmas. Their neighbors torment them, shun them, vandalize their lawns and gossip all over town just because 2 people decide to take a cruise rather than decorate the house with a stupid Frosty the Snowman. It's not funny, and not believable. The leader of the neighbors represents Hitler, his kid, a member of the Ku Klux Klan, (practically burning a cross on the lawn of this couple).
And Luther and Nora are no better. When they find out their precious daughter Blair is coming home for Christmas with her new Peruvian boyfriend all they can think about is "How dark is his skin!" and when they finally meet him, "He wasn't dark at all! At least two shades lighter than Luther himself!" As if this is a cause of celebration, or even a basis of judging someone. And to make it even more disgusting, Luther and Nora spend the entire book going to a tanning salon to DARKEN THEIR SKIN FOR THEIR CRUISE!!! John Grisham, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!?? You owe me money, Mr. Grisham. I am offended.

Please ship this book. It hurts.

Summary: The real meaning of Christmas
Review: I bought this book because it was John Grisham. I loved this book because it was about all of us. I cried in the last chapter. It made me look forward to Christmas this year and I even cut back a little on the materialism. I've passed it along to my mother so that she can feel better about this season. Perfect timing.
