Rating: Summary: A new low for Grisham Review: Trite, predictable characters. Predictable plot. Sugar-sweet ending. Just a waste of time and money. He should be embarrassed to publish this under his own name.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas: Falling Short Review: Looking to Grisham to provide scintillating holiday reading, I was disappointed in SKIPPING CHRISTMAS. The plot was plastic, the characters were shallow, and the usual satisfaction that comes from reading one of his titles was absent. I had to check that it was the same John Grisham who wrote this.
Rating: Summary: Twas the night before Christmas, not a lawyer in sight Review: I don't know if I'd call this book a Christmas classic any more than I'd call "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" a classic Christmas movie, but, just as I enjoy seeing the antics of the Griswolds every December, I'm sure I will be returning to this book for some light holiday entertainment. And what's wrong with that? By now you know the story: a middle-aged couple faced with celebrating Christmas without their daughter who joined the Peace Corps and was shipped off to South America decide to sign up for a Christmas cruise and skip all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Of course, that's easier said than done, as pressure from friends, neighbors, merchants, and civic charity groups threatens to wear down their resolve. They certainly can't get away with skipping Christmas....can they? This is certain to become a movie showing at a theater near you for the Christmas of 2003 or 4.
Rating: Summary: Great Humor Review: I love all John Grisham books, and I was surprised to see he had written such a silly book. I absolutely loved this book, however, I would have told my daughter, no way baby, Dad and I are going on a trip! It was funny through out and you can read it in two days, good humor for your Christmas blues!
Rating: Summary: What Fun! Review: This book is such fun. It is not typically Grisham but rather a satirical, easy read. Poking fun at the commercialism of Christmas, the author brings out thoughts and feelings we have all had around the holidays. With classic comedic satire, Grisham points out how we have let the trappings of the holiday overide the true meaning of this most important Christian celebration. This is the perfect time of year to read this novel. By January or February, I am ready to read something light and humorous. And of course, the true meaning of Christmas always prevails. Enough said. I don't want to give anything away. READ THIS BOOK. You will enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: You have to read it. Review: This book was so enjoyable - very funny and easy to imagine vividly each scene. The second half was hysterical and I laughed out loud throughout, leaving my family to wonder what was wrong with me. The book reminds me of a cross between the movie "Its a wonderful Life" and several movies with the "Griswalds" with Chevy Chase. It was very light, fun reading with a message. Most entertaning book I have read in ages!! Also a surprise touching ending. Loved it.
Rating: Summary: Christmas stress ... Review: Fantastic little book. Easy reading, you can finish it in 1 night. This book is so funny, I keep telling my husband that Christmas can be stressful, now he can read it and convince himself! I couldn't believe it was written by Grisham. A must read.
Rating: Summary: Do NOT Skip "Skipping Christmas" Review: I cannot say enough about this book. IT IS GREAT!!!!! I have read some of Mr. Grisham's earlier novels and was anxious to see his talents in a story about my favorite holiday season. AND I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. In fact, I plan to purchase this delightful and VERY funny book to read every year. I laughed out loud at the antics of the main characters to the point of tears! I have recommended the book to perfect strangers as well to all my friends. I certainly hope that the story is set up on the big screen where we can see it played out in 'reality'. However, while it may seem to some of the readers(reviewers, a story liking to 'a National Lapoon', I upgrade it. The only ones who would do THIS justice would be Steve Martin and Diane Keaton in the title roles. But enough about that. READ THE BOOK!! You'll laugh out loud. John Grisham has you seeing the characters. I LOVED IT!!!
Rating: Summary: Good, solid story Review: John Grisham takes a fairly simple premise and weaves it into a short, yet worthwhile title. It may not stand up with his other books, but you could do far worse. It reads well and "omits needless words" to keep the boredom down. A Christmas Carol is a better read at Christmas, but a modern day tale of foregoing the rat-race of the holidays blooms. 3 out of 5
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas is Wonderful! Review: I really enjoyed this book. It is not your typical Grisham book but is a delight to read. Other reviews state that it is not true to reality and misses the mark in accuracy. Well, people have you ever heard of an imagination? This book was a great story to make you think about skipping important things in ones life. Skipping Christmas is a wonderful book to read and enjoy! I highly recommend this book!
