Rating: Summary: Received the Audio Version from a CoWorker Review: I would listen to this book on the way to and from work each day and found myself wishing the trip was longer. I laughed out loud at Krank and Nora and haven't laughed that loud for years. It is a story you can relate to as so many of us have gotten caught up in the Christmas craziness. The ending is perfect and I didn't see it coming. If you want some light hearted reading or listening buy this book and then share it with your closest friends. They will love it too.
Rating: Summary: Wishing I'd skipped this book! Review: The attempts at humor fall flat in this poorly written farce.
Rating: Summary: No Christmas Fairy Tale. Review: Many books talk about the joys of Christmas. This book, however, moves away from the fantasy vision and delves into the reality - the cost, the effort, and the stress. A man's only daughter moves out of the country for the first time, and decides that instead of spending the six thousand dollars on Christmas, he'll go with his wife on a cruise. While a good idea, it seemed like every force in the neighborhood didn't want him to skip Christmas. It's filled with light humor and good observations. On a deeper note, it deals with conformity in a society. Both work and are enjoyable. As usual, Grisham is fluid and writes a good tale. His non-law books are the best, not because he can't make a good legal thriller, but that he's a much better storyteller instead. Unfortunately, he adds a little plot twist in the middle of the book, resulting in a cheesy, happily ever after ending that didn't fit with the book. At less than 200 pages, this book is a quick read, but perhaps not the best value.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: The book I read was Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. I thought that this was a great book. It is about a couple that decides to skip all the chaos of Christmas and use the extra 4,000 dollars that they usually use on gifts, food, ect. And go on a cruise to the Island Princess. They decided to do this because their daughter, Claire, went to take an extra class on an Indian village. This way, she would not know about it. They got a surprise though, when Claire called to say that her and her new fiancé would be coming home for Christmas dinner. I would only recommend this book to an older age group because it is a little advanced.
Rating: Summary: Perfect to read on a cold winters night, with a hot toddie Review: This book is great light reading for the holiday season. The story is touching and funny and reads easily. Yes, it does bring tears to your eyes, but in a warm holiday way. Perfect if you want to curl up with a hot toddie on a cold winters night and read a fun modern christmas story. Perfect story for those with children who need a nice break. I was glad I read it.
Rating: Summary: Consise Review: "Skipping Christmas" was short, consise, and insightful. Luther displayed feelings most of us share briefly during the hustle and bustle of Holiday shopping, still in the end he shows that he is a true "Santa." Good book to read any time of the year. Grisham's characters and his dialogue all ring with truth. He puts you in the midst of the narrative and keeps you interested. Beverly J Scott author of "Righteous Revenge."
Rating: Summary: disapointing Review: I love all of the John Grisham books that I have read. This one though is full of characters that it's very hard to like. I don't indentify with them and don't want to. Go buy a painted house and skip this one.
Rating: Summary: skip the others, read this book! Review: Loved this book. I read it a year ago and laughed and cried. It will be standard holiday reading each year. To me, Luther Krank wanted to do what most of us only dream about...skip Christmas just for once. I loved the neighbors - we all have a Fromeyer in our neighborhoods... I laughed out loud at the scene of Luther trying to hastily get the Snowman up. I wish I could tell Grisham to ignore all the nay-sayers and let him know that it was a marvelous and touching holiday story. Love, love, love this book!
Rating: Summary: Reason why I picked up the book?--I'm an athiest of course! Review: After reading Skipping Christmas, I was a little disappointed with the ending, but the last few pages should not alter my opinion. I enjoyed Luther and his antics. It was a quick little read as everybody else has already said. Grisham should come out with more of these little books. I swear everybody at the airport this past month was reading it while waiting for their flight. Grisham scores...again.
Rating: Summary: Good Pre-Christmas Gift Review: My mother in law gave this as a gift to everyone before the holidays & I loved it. I read it in two nights and while some of it was quite predictable Grisham's writing style made it fun all the same. It's a great reminder that the holdiays make us all a little crazed!b
