Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Mediocre, but influential
Review: Despite the overly dense descriptions and some irritating lead characters, this book is worth reading just to see how much it has influenced others.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Charming but difficult to read
Review: Kaye Gibbons is an author who doesn't belive in a lot of dialogue in her books. Because of the way Ellen Foster was written, it was sometimes confusing to follow. Ellen is an eleven-year-old girl, and she talks like one. However, she has the wisdom of an "old-soul". This girl doesn't have an easy life, and doesn't seem to belong anywhere, and for that, you truly feel for the character. Because this book flip-flops around, it takes away from some of it's charm. A warm read all the same.

Summary: Lovely book with one tough protagonist
Review: "Ellen Foster" by Kaye Gibbons was a very enjoyable book about a rough and tumble girl who takes the reader along with her as she tries to find love in a cynical and unsympathetic world. I liked the way the author presented the book in first person and used the deliberate grammatical errors to help the reader relate to the 12 year old protagonist in a delightful way. A quick inspirational read chosen by the Oprah Book Club.

Summary: An easy read that was sweet
Review: This is an easy read about a young girl looking for love. Little Miss Ellen goes through some tough times that many adults could not handle. But she arrives on the other side thankfully with few scars. Ms. Gibbons describes how innocence can be lost and regain when someone loves you. This novel makes you think, cry and rejoice when she finally finds love. This is one of the better books that Oprah has selected.

Summary: Funny...tragic...from the perspective of a 12 year old girl
Review: Out of the mouths of babes...Gibbons relates her tale through the mind of the 12 year old "victim" who lives an existence that no one should. The tone and language are terrific. It delivers one back in to the pre-adolescent years whether or not you had that type of childhood or not -- hopefully not! Downside is the disjointed flow of the novel...the reader is sometimes confused as to timeframe as the book bounces back and forth. Otherwise, an enjoyable quick read.

Summary: fresh, honest, crisp - don't miss it!
Review: if you like literature about growing up in the south, grab this book and your iced tea or mint julep before settling down in your favorite chair. ellen foster is a well-told story full of wit, humor and pathos that ends long before the tale is worn out.

Rating: 4 stars

Summary: Very good and thought provoking book.
Review: Ellen Foster is a great book for anyone. It is written in conversation style, making it more tedious to read, but it is still interesting. At times, you can laugh with Ellen and sometimes feel sympathy for her.
