Rating: Summary: Yancey does it again Review: Holding nothing back the author (Philip Yancey) writes about our world from a Christian perspective. He shows us that there is more to this world than initially meets the eye, something supernatural. Rumors of Another World is a book that explores these 'rumors', not as proof as if Yancey knows the absolute truth, but as possibilities that there is something more. This was a well written book that goes outside of the 'boundaries' that contain many Christian authors. I have recommended this book to several of my friends and relatives.
Rating: Summary: Thoughtful Review: This is a thought provoking book and its written to those that aren't Christian or haven't taken action in the Christian faith. It explores the concept of God, the supernatural, & how it applies to our life and culture. It's not preachy, its written in such a way that it makes you think while still being easy to read. There are three parts to the book: What are we missing?, signs of disorder, two worlds.
Rating: Summary: Bring you back to earth to remind you there is more Review: I am a fan of Yancey's writing, and this book has not failed me. Always honest, often profound, this is a book that makes you realise that the whispers of a life after this one are impossible to ignore. I walked away from this book with a real desire to have amore honest and real faith. Yancey is never preachy, but somehow you always put down his books with a conviction about how God wants you to behave a little differently. I would recommend this book to both Christians who want to have a honest look at themselves, and to people who just have an inkling that there is more to life than money, sex, products, heartache, death and taxes. You cannot leave this book without thinking more hopefully about the world.
Rating: Summary: Stimulating Spiritual Insights as Usual from Philip Yancey!! Review: This is just one more to add to your collection of inspired and satisfying books by this delightful (and thoughtful) Christian author. Truly a man of God and a man who isn't afraid to explore the depths of Christianity in a twisted world. If you need fresh encouragement and a dose of inspiration, search no further, this book has it all!!
Rating: Summary: Religion adapted to today's world Review: As a gen-X'er, the views presented in this book really appeal to me. It isn't about one particular religion, it rather encompasses all religions. I was brought up Catholic, but have some issues with that faith. That makes it difficult to believe in God, however, Yancey's views really renew my faith. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Read - Very Thought Provoking Review: Rumors of Another World is a great book. Philip Yancy gives wonderful thoughts to ponder. In reading Rumors I found that I stopped to notice the majesty of the world around me, the thoughts Rumors provikes makes me feel a little less urgency in my everyday life. Rumors made me look at my life and re-evaluate my priorities. I realized that I was existing, running harried from one crisis to the next. This book made me step back and look at my purpose. Rumors has made me appreciate God in nature, including people.
Rating: Summary: A postmodern apologetic, that will crunch a few toes! Review: This was a GOOD READ! Phillip Yancey is what I would call a skeptic / believer, and as such he is not afraid to approach the tough questions. Because of that, I think this book is DYNAMITE for someone new to Life In Christ, or a skeptic who is exploring spirituality, and is not afraid to peek behind the scenes at Christianity. Because this is exactly what Yancey does - pull back the curtain and look at the stuff behind the perceptions of what this 2000-year-old "religion" is really all about (beyond what the typical church would reveal). Sex - one of the best treatises I have read. Pain & suffering - covers it. Questions - in particular he recognizes and asks many of the key questions we all have about life, and yet his "answers" reveal that he doesn't pretend to have them all, and yet - unveil how to have a confidence AMONGST the unanswered questions! NOW - if you have read the above and think this isn't a book for someone already firmly committed to a life of Discipleship to Jesus, you are mistaken! Yancey will poke you, and step on some raw nerves, and make you blush a tad with embarrassment, and help you rethink your commitment to a live lived with God.
Rating: Summary: Out of this world! Review: Rumors of Another World is a book in a class all of its own. Phillip Yancey has taken every day happenings and given them a new perspective. His novel deals with everyday lifes, and the connections to God and spiritual beings. He brings new views to being a member of God's family by sharing his beliefs and views. He admits to standing on the outside of organized religon and makes the everyday reader feel right at home with his style of writing. Mr. Yancey writes in a conversational tone that makes you feel as though he is standing in front of you. This is a five star novel in my view point! Great work Mr. Yancey!
Rating: Summary: The Faith That Never Was Review: Philip Yancey has, once again, written a superb book. Insightful, thought provoking, and well written, this book will rank as one of his best. Mr. Yancey talks like he has faith, yet he couches his faith with words that make his faith sound weak to nonexistent. For example, on the jacket he is quoted as saying, " I am where you are" (quite an assumption)"....and as I live I try to figure out if there is a God, and what difference would that make.....". Reading Yancey is, for me, like watching an accomplished ballerina dancing and twirling but never leaping. You wait and watch and hope and anticipate, hold your breath, but the leap never comes. He has all the skills and comes so close, but he never displays that leap that would prove him the ballerina extraordinare that I know he could be. I wonder if his kind of searching, which never results in a sure finding, could see him through the life of an apostle, or a Watchman Nee, or a Detriech Bonhoeffer. He seems to think that such faith is impossible, yet he seems so close. As I've wondered about this paradox, I have come to believe that his experience as a child is what holds him back. I think that he sees himself in a dichotomy with his boyhood church which did not deal with racism and sin in a Biblical way. I think that in his opposition to the traditional conservative church of his youth he has thrown the baby out with the bathwater. In his zeal to be nontraditional and non-conservative he is unable to adopt the sure faith which the old southern conservatives had in spite of their failure to address social issues in the way and in the time we all would have liked them to. It seems that he is a man on the verge of a kind of "certain faith" that would, by its very nature, make him conservative and rob him of his ability to be loose with his doctrine. It seems a pity to me to see the man on the 1 yard line unable to go the last yard for a touch down. I think he is gifted but afraid to take that gift the last distance. The book will benefit anyone who reads it, yet it has the potential to retard the consumation of a man's faith, and even to make a man feel he is a conservative Neanderthal if he is sure that there is a God and stakes everything on this fact. Mr. Yancey, go for it! There IS a God and that HAS made all the differnce.
Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking Review: Rumors of Another World is an excellent spiritual book for doubters and wavering unbelievers. All of Yancy's books deserve 5 stars. He is an outstanding writer and his books are easy to read. Right now I am looking at my bookshelf which includes eleven of his books Each one is a masterpiece of Christian writing because of the author's extensive research. As he struggles with common questions of faith in his own life, and discovers answers that satisfy, he shares them with the world and helps provide us with a solid faith foundation. When I complete a Yancy book, I always have the same feeling "the author must read my mind!" This book probes the fine line between the real world and an invisible world. The insights provided strengthen belief in a creator God. I recommend his book "I Was Just Wondering" along with this one.
