Rating: Summary: Review of audiobook version. Review: Since so many other reviews tell you the story I won't bother with that here:1) The reader of the audiobook did a fine job, very good acting. She did some voice changes for different characters but not all, which is ok because it wasnt needed. 2) Characters are believable and their actions consistent. 3) Plot was well put together with enough red herrings and other dislikable characters that you couldn't quite guess the real end to very late in the story. I figured out most of it about 2/3rds of the way through or at least had my suspicions...but that only encouraged me to keep reading to see if I was right or not. Nice pace to everything...at no point was an action-freak like myself bored and wanting more, even though there is very little "action". 4) The protagonist is a character one would want to read in another story. Strong female detective type with a sharp sense of humor and insight. Enjoyable and a character with flaws (not perfect physically and personality-wise)...what more could you ask for. OVERALL: Worth getting into. Makes me want to check out more from this author.
Rating: Summary: Not enough horse Review: In a former life, Elena Estes was a cop. In her present life, she's an angry, blunt, and suicidal ex-cop who made a mistake on the job that cost another cop's life. When 12-year-old Molly Seabright searches Elena out for help in finding her missing 18-year-old sister, Erin, Elena's hiding out on a friend's Florida ranch with her horse. Elena protests that she's not even a PI, but Molly, wise and scared and painfully old for her years, is hard to put off. And it soon becomes apparent no one else is looking for the missing girl. Erin's parents don't care. Erin's former boyfriend tells Elena she's way out of line. At the stable where Erin worked, a valuable horse has been mysteriously killed. When Elena tries to bring the case to the attention of her former employers, she's handed over to Detective James Landry, who dislikes her on sight and refuses help. She shares his disaffection, but there's a girl missing and a lot of strange things happening in the horse show business and if he won't do anything she'll do it herself. Elena the dark horse finally has a second chance. A couple of days ago I took DARK HORSE out of the library again, forgetting I'd already read it five months ago, and so had another go at it. It wasn't much better the second time. The equestrian angle is very interesting and I would have enjoyed this book if it had spent more time in the stables and on the show ground, but after the kidnapping took the spotlight I grew increasingly bored and incredulous. Also, while I enjoyed the chapters written from Elena's first-person perspective, I found the jumps to the third person accounts disjointed. The best part of this novel is the high tension between Landry and Elena, and Tami Hoag would have done well to keep this strictly a horse mystery while stepping up the romance. Readers seeking tightly woven and credible mysteries would do well to look elsewhere, but equestrians and fans of Tami Hoag will probably find DARK HORSE worth reading.
Rating: Summary: This is a 10 star book!! Review: Fast paced, interesting characters, a couple of red herrings, murder, love, just an all around terrific book which is hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: This was my first Hoag novel, and I enjoyed it. I am an avid mystery reader, and as someone who grew up in the hunter/jumper horse world, I felt I knew all the characters! I will read more Hoag in the future.
Rating: Summary: Not her best, but still pretty good! Review: A lot of people have nightly rituals. So does Elena Estes. She takes out her stash of pain medication and does calculations. She could take one and ease her physical pain, or take them all, and end everything. A former narcotic detective, Elena was badly injured when an arrest went sour, killing another cop. Now a outcast, she flees to the home of a close friend, and is taken in, and given a job caring for horses. Which is how she is drawn into a case that could break her out of her depression... or just plain break her. Eleven-year-old Molly Seabright is the only one worried about her missing sister, eighteen-year-old Erin. At first, Elena resists Molly, not wanting any part of it... but is sucked in when she realizes that Molly may indeed be right that her big sister has fallen into deep trouble. Now, Dark Horse is a little slow going, and may lack a little depth, but still manages to be entertaining. I reccomend it to anyone who likes horses... and Tami Hoag.
Rating: Summary: Must Read Review: Fast, entertaining, couldn't put it down. Best read so far this year
Rating: Summary: Not as good as the rest of Tami's work! Review: I was so excited to read this book. My librarian turned me on to Tami Hoag at the age of fifteen, and 7 years later I still consider Tami as one of my favorites! There was something just not totally Tami in this book. I thought it was a a bit boring personally and did not identify with her characters as much. It just wasn't the same as the steamy bayou! You would think this would have been her easiest work, being that she is an equestrian, but her two passions do not appear to work well together. I do give four stars though, because I still think she is a top pick author, and much better than the rest on display at the stores!
Rating: Summary: Get it if you work/show at the Winter Equestrian Festival Review: ..Otherwise I thought it was mediocre. Fun to see our stomping grounds included in a novel, but generally not great reading. I will pass my copy on to an interested WEF participant, so they don't have to buy a copy.
Rating: Summary: Suspense Review: While I do understand the need for "suspense" books to keep you guessing, it is hard not to do so while reading this book. There are many believable suspects in this book and everytime you think you might have it figured out the author steers you in a different direction, which leads me to ask did the author even know who she wanted to pin this on from the beginning or not?
Rating: Summary: What do horses and spoiled rich kids have in common? Read on Review: This is another suspense story by Tami Hoag. In this story Elena Estes is still trying to9 get her life in order after the terrible accident and loss of her job with the sheriff. She is staying with a friend from her childhood and acting as a horse exerciser, basically doing what she wants to do and loosing herself with the horses. Then her friend gives a picture of her and says she is a private investigator to a local horse magazine. A little girl see t his and decided that she is the one who can help her find her sister that no one else seems to care about. She at first refuses and then decided that after asking a few questions that maybe she is the only one taking this seriously. You don't' have to know much about horses to be able to enjoy this story. TH does a good job giving you enough background to be able to follow the story and even learn a few things along the way. there is suspense as well as mystery with this story.
