Rating: Summary: Power Speaker; but not an Author Review: I love TD Jakes the Pastor, Prolific Teacher, the Prophet, a true Man of God. However, in my opinion his writing leaves a lot to be desired. Cover Girls is not the only book that I have read. I really did not enjoy "The Lady, The Lover, Her Lord". God's Leading Lady was written fairly well. Pastor Jakes is gifted in many areas, I take nothing from him as I enjoy his ministry tremendously. I just don't think his literature is that great.
Rating: Summary: Better as a book of short stories Review: I love the T.D. Jakes ministry and looked forward to his entrée into the fiction arena. I didn't like the book and found the storylines to be too long. Only 1 character was really developed in the book.

Rating: Summary: Not Bad for A First Novel Review: I picked this book up because it was written by Bishop T.D. Jakes. I have read several of his books and frequently watch his show. He inspires me and his words have definitely helped bring me closer to God. I really didn't know what to expect but was impressed by his skill in this genre. The book is well-written and he uses dialogue wisely and correctly. There is a nice flow to his words and the characters are believable. Bishop Jakes intertwines bible verses and references to his own books throughout the book. I hear his words in the prayers and his stength in the wisdom of Miz Ida and Tonya. It is a rather painless way to get the message out there to those who may not be receptive to the stronger version. The story actually holds up well and kept me involved. It is a little bit predictable but that's okay. I liked it and read it in one sitting so he succeeded in that. I have nothing but respecct and admiration for Bishop Jakes and if he writes another novel, I will read that one too.
Rating: Summary: Cover Girls is a good quality book, Review: I really was not at all interested in reading Bishop T.D. Jakes' novel, Cover Girls. Contemporary Christian fiction is not genre of choice, and I was skeptical whether Bishop Jakes could put together an interesting work of fiction. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Cover Girls. The plot was decent and Bishop Jakes provides depth and insight into his character that a lot of mainstream African-American authors fail to accomplish. Cover Girls is about the intersecting lives of four women. Michelle, is a twenty-something career woman looking for the next big promotion. Abused as a child, Michelle has hardened her heart to love and even kindness. Tonya, Michelle's supervisor, is a dowdy, good hearted, spiritual woman, with a college age son. Tonya and Michelle are at odds and are brought together by fellow co-worker Shadrick to begin to open the lines of honest communication. The two develop a friendship beyond the job and end up helping one another blossom. Mrs. Judson, is the successful owner of the business where Michelle and Tonya work. Mrs. Judson is adept at managing and organizing at work, but at home her well planned life is falling apart. Her troubles at home spill over into the office, and Michelle and Tonya are there to help her wade through the unimaginable. Ms. Ida, is an energetic, optimistic, devout senior citizen who is the mother-figure to Michelle. Ms. Ida was there for Michelle when her own mother was not, and has always encouraged Michelle depend on God to help her face her issues. Cover Girls is a powerful story of faith, honesty and the beauty of female friendships. The conversations in the book are potent and thought provoking. Bishop T.D. Jakes did a fine job of delicately weaving the themes of faith and belief in God into a book targeted towards a mainstream audience. Although there was a point near the end where book got a little too preachy for my secular tastes, Bishop Jakes deftly brought the book back to its subtle beginnings. Cover Girls is a good quality book, that you can read quickly, and come away with some useful things to apply to your own life. Reviewed By: misrich MBC2003
Rating: Summary: Okay book Review: I think this was an OK book. I wasn't totally hooked or completely impressed. I would not read this again.
Rating: Summary: Keeps getting better Review: I was hesitant to pick this one up from the beginning--and I should have gone with my first thoughts. I absolutely adore fiction written about the Christian experience, however this one didn't quite meet my expectations. I found the subject matter to be great...but at times, there were extended monologues/sermons/preaching that stretched the point. I even felt like I'd heard the sermons before! Good messages, no doubt-but not quite the story development that I seek in my reading. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the characters because we all know women like them...all at different seasons in life. I only wish Bishop Jakes had written more of a story with a moral/lesson instead of a sermon with a story written around it.

Rating: Summary: I Was A Bit Disappointed... Review: I'm a huge TD Jakes fan and I love his teaching and preaching ministry. However, I'd have to be honest enough to say that this novel disappointed me. I'd waited a long time to pick this book up and read it, mostly because I had friends who read and it and were lukewarm, at best, with their feedback. After reading it myself, I'd have to agree with them. I really think he should stick to his non-fiction, teaching-style books because fiction isn't his calling. This is such a far cry from the calliber of his teaching tools that I almost have to wonder if he had a ghostwriter for Cover Girls and then just had his name placed on it as the author. This, to me, doesn't even mirror his other printed stuff. At any rate, I did find some of the book to be entertaining (especially the opening chapter) and because I bought an autographed copy, I won't be selling it or giving it away. This book doesn't change my opinion of Bishop Jakes. I still think he's one of the best orators around.
Rating: Summary: A character changing read Review: If you like a fast paced story with characters that reflect some of our own good and bad then this is the book to read. Tonya is like a lot of church people, just plain tired but never giving up or stopping and not seeing how their dress, face & posture reflect way more than what they say about the Lord. Michelle is like a LOT of our young people. Real tender hearted (truly she is :-)) but hiding it behind an invincable wall to keep from being hurt again and again. Her worst enemy is herself until Tonya and Shad (another co-worker) show her a different kind of love, God's love. Then there's the Boss I think we can all think of a person like her and even see some of ourselves in her. We all want our world orderly, neat and on time. But God tends to draw outside the lines we draw for ourselves. This book was so good I simply had to put it down more than once and chew the meat from God's table that I found in it. Unforgetable. Come on TD Jakes have a Cover Girls 2!
