Summary: Sorry--I'm not getting it
Review: Just read this after several friends raved. Oh boy--yet another whiny thirtysomething looking for love. What an ORIGINAL concept . . .

Summary: Disappointing book club choice
Review: Our book club read "Girls' Guide" and was generally disappointed. The book starts out pleasantly, but I never connected with the heroine. When she played by "The Rules" I just got disgusted with her. If you're looking for a good story about a woman, try "Where the Heart Is."

Summary: Uplifting Story!
Review: I absolutely loved this book. I really felt a part of Jane's life. This book made me laugh out loud and shed a few tears. I have since lent my book to a few friends and they feel the same. Share this book! I can't wait until Melissa writes us another.

Summary: It just left me feeling... empty.
Review: I was totally psyched to read this book. I had heard so many wonderful things about it. The trouble is, reading it was as boring as peeling potatoes. Nothing happened. Jane is not sexy, savvy or smart. She's not a single NYC gal on the prowl. She's frumpy, boring, and indecisive.

This book left me empty. Not because it had a profound effect on my psychological state. I only wish it had! It was just a bore.

I detested Bridget Jones' Diary- but would highly recommend it in comparison to this disjointed, confusing and flat book. I gave it to a friend and asked them to read it to see if it really stunk as much as I perceived it did.

I do not understand the high volume of 5 stars in these reviews! If you want a good book, read a classic like the Great Gatsby. The girls Guide is not, in any way shape or form, a GREAT book.

It's a whole lot of hype. Visit your library- but don't spend the $$!

Summary: Quirky and Quick
Review: This was a fun little fast read. It started off well. I enjoyed the characters right away. The two random chapters were a little bothersome. They were good little short stories in themselves. I wanted to find out more about those people and to hear their stories. It made the book feel a little disjointed. All in all, it was a quirky book that I finished very quickly. I would recommend it, as long as you aren't expecting anything earth shattering.

Summary: It's just a fun read...
Review: I get such a kick out of all these <ahem> "serious readers" that are so put out by this book. Perhaps reading the jacket didn't give you a clue as to what the content might be? If you bought this thinking it was literature then you really are clueless and I'm afraid there may be little hope for you. This book is silly and yes sometimes it's even stupid...but it's mostly just fun. It's not prose - just something light and quick (AKA "a beach read"). I'm satisfied that I got what I paid for - a couple of hours of light entertainment. Not to like it because you felt it failed as literary fiction is, in itself, ridiculous. Lighten up already!

Summary: funny girls need love too.
Review: read this before bridget jones' diary or tama janowitz's a certain age and definitley before "the rules." actually, don't read the rules. bank is an amazing writer and is funny and sarcastic she is pretty spot on about some things. but the best thing is that she encourages funny girls to be funny and not subdue it just so boys will like them.

Summary: Well, I don't get it . . . but i kind of like it?
Review: Okay, so the character in this book keeps trying not to make a mistake, but she's not learning the lessons that come with making mistakes, by missing out on the pain. That's cool, I can relate to that. However, the author assumes that we can also relate to all characters, and remember even how they relate to one another. it was like, "Billy came in. I knew what he wanted." and you're like "BILLY?WHO THE H--- is BILLY? What DOES he want? Is he the same guy as WILLY or is that in the last story? I'm so confused. . . " But she's a good writer, esp. for her first time (WOW) and the book made me laugh, so I can't take away all the stars*.

Summary: What an odd, disjointed little book.
Review: I chose the title since I'd remembered its publicized debut. Now, I'm wondering why a first-time author reaped so much acclaim, and why I'm not endeavoring to join the club. The novel is really a collection of short stories; one unrelated chapter comes in out of left field. The protagonist rattles off caustic one-liners, behaves stupidly and exhibits minimal emotional growth. I could not sympathize or empathize one whit.

Summary: Check it out from your library
Review: i ponied up the $16 to buy this book in hard cover maybe a month or so after it came out...

as a collection of short stories it does its job - it's entertaining at times, slow at time, and unpredicatable. although this wasnt the worst book ive ever read ) it wasn't the best and overall i regret buying it.

i think my biggest problem was the inconsitancy - three of the five stories were riveting while the remaining were bland (and one did not seem to fit in with the book as a whole) with boring long monologues and descriptions

overall i suggest checking this out from your local library (for free) and then decide if youd like to purchase it from there
