Rating: Summary: What happened? Review: I was really looking forward to the next book by Judith McNaught. Although, Night Whispers would have been good for another writer, I expected more from her. I didn't really get to emphatize with any of the characters. I was looking forward to more scenes from Paul and Paris, not just a few lines about how they turned out. Also, why tease us with a possible romance between Jess and Sara? Is this an introduction for a story of their own? But I guess no matter how disappointed I am with this last book, I will still buy the next McNaught book!!!
Rating: Summary: Good, Not Great Review: Night Whispers was pretty good. It wasn't as perfect as McNaught's Perfect and not as forgettable as her Remember When. I was actually unable to put the book down towards the end. The plot started off very slowly: literally one-third of the book passes before the heroine, Sloan Reynolds, meets the hero, Noah Maitland. Mcnaught is very good at setting the background and history and it worked perfectly in her novel Perfect which has some one-hundred plus pages of more text (and smaller font) than Night Whispers. The hero, Noah is somewhat unapproachable and untouchable to the heroine (as he was to me as the reader) and somewhat one-dimensional. The author talks about Sloan's feeling of not fitting in with Noah's world because of the huge differences in their backgrounds, and it seems that this issue could have been explored to a greater depth. Their comfort with each other was resolved in a sexual and not really on an emotional level. Also, I didn't like Paul Richardson's reprisal role (he was also in Perfect) as the FBI agent who persuades Sloan to investigate her family, as his character in the story was somewhat irksome. He was kind and insightful but could also be manipulative and narrow. The book, of course had major pluses. I really liked Sloan as the heroine. She was bright, funny and active. Her mother and best friend, Noah's sister and father, and of course the matriarch, Edith Reynolds added spice, laughter and warmth to the novel. Also, I would love to see Jess the cop turn up in another novel. To sum, the book was pretty good, but not as satisfying, complex or as richly explored as (need I say it?) Perfect. I think it needed at least another 50 pages to do so. Compared to other romance novels, I rate this book with 4 stars. Compared with other JM novels, 3 stars. JM remains one of the few authors (in whatever genre) that I will buy in hard cover.
Rating: Summary: I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK Review: Boy, was I disappointed in this one. I should have waited for the paperback!!!
Rating: Summary: a very nice romance, but not more than that Review: A very nice love story, but not McNaught standards. It is just not "fleshed out" sufficiently. When I remember "Paradise"! Every character breathed, lived, had motivations of his own. Here, I still don't understand Paul Richardson (he has sweet moments, but he never really becomes a person, and his motives for again - he was the detective who ruthlessly used a young woman in "Perfect", too - using someone so carelessly are never spelled out). His romance with Paris is never described, it would have been so nice to know more about that instead of just finding out that it happened. I miss the development of the romance between Noah and Sloan, except for two, three nice scenes it all happens in a few sentences where she thinks how nice the last ten days were. Noah never really becomes a person to me either (how I nostalgically remember Zack from "Perfect" or even Cole in "Remember When"), Noah is just a black and white sketch compared to their color photographs. The villain and his motives are also just quickly stated, that is not exough for me. And the love affair between the older couple would have been so nice to read about, instead of just hearing it happened in the epilogue. Finally, Sara and Jess deserved some more space, too. I feel more and more that McNaught is publishing books that are not finished, really. If she had taken the time to "flesh out" this lovely story, to make it some 200 pages longer, it would have been wonderful. This way, it is disappointing - please, wait for the paperback!!
Rating: Summary: A New Twist for Judith McNaught Review: I have read all of Judith McNaught's books, and I appreciated this one because it combines elements of a romance with a suspenseful mystery novel. Although parts of it were rushed, I loved it and couldn't put it down. I read all 400 pages in one evening! Definitely better than Remember When, although not as good as Perfect.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ for Judith McNaught fan's Review: This was a wonderful book!!! I love her comtemporaries like Paradise and Almost Heaven. In fact there is a slight connection with Almost Heaven in this book. The FBI agent is the same one that was featured in that book. Slone Reynolds is a great character and so easy to love, Noah Matliand is tall, dark, handsome and a billionare, so you do the math. The real surprise was Noah's sister - I found her the most refreshing and fun character that I've read in ages and I hope that Judith does a short story (or better yet - a whole book) on her.
Rating: Summary: Murder mystery with romance and family conflicts. Review: Not up to the usual high standards of her past books. The characters are much more superficial, and the different relationships in the book are banal and predictable. Wait for the paperback.
Rating: Summary: Explanations Needed Review: The problem with the story is why was Maitland's occupation never explained? His sister Courtney hinted that it may be illegal but, nothing in the plot about it was forthcoming. Is there to be a sequel or what? Why does he have the guns? How does he make his money? Through what kind of investment or is it laudering? Other than the questions it was a good read.
Rating: Summary: A winner, but. Review: This was a good romance. The suspense was not really there because you could figure out from the beginning chapters who was going to be good guy and bad guy. Enjoyed the secondary characters esp. Jess, Sara, and Courtney. A good read.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!! Review: Just finished reading 'Night Whispers'..thoroughly enjoyed it, but not as much as 'Paradise'. The characters were wonderful in this book, especially Sloan & Paris and,of course, Noah & Paul. I must say though, I felt a sense of 'dejavu' when Noah hung up on Sloan when she called from jail and near the end of the book when she says goodbye to Noah on the boat. Noah's actions were very similar to Clayton's in 'Whitney My Love' and Sloan's actions (when she was saying goodbye to Noah on the boat) were very similar to Whitney when she confronted Clayton by the fireplace in his mother's home. Correct?? Of course, as Whitney My Love is my FAVORITE book...this was ok with me. This is worth reading year after year!!!
