Rating: Summary: The Book For U 2 Read Review: At the age of 12, David Haydens world had totally changed and turned upside down. His families Indian maid had been struck with pneumonia. Davids father, Wesley(town sheriff) calls up his brother Frank(doctor) to check up on her. Frank is a real respected man, but soon everyone in the Hayden family finds out that Frank is really an Indian women molester. Since he became a doctor, he had been doing it for many years. Wesley takes action and investigates the whole incident. He soon finds out that Frank is convicted for all his wrong doings. In the mean time, the maid, Marie, dies from Frank murdering her. Wesley then locks Frank up in their basement and then one day finds him dead. The family moves away and starts a whole new life. This book is really moving and is told in a great and personal way. Larry Watson writes as the person who is reading it is in the book as well. You feel like a character in the story, playing a part. This book was so exciting that it pursued me to read on and turn the pages. It kept me guessing to what was to happen next. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Its a well written novel and I enjoyed it as well.
Rating: Summary: Novel version of a 'B' reel movie - and not for the kids Review: An interesting premise gets a surprisingly dark tone and poor execution in MONTANA 1948. Though it's billed as a "coming of age" story, there isn't much in the way of plot concerned with a boy metamorphosing into a man. What author Larry Watson presents is a mature man's recollections about tragic childhood events in his family's history and some eye-opening facets of his family's dark side.MONTANA 1948's tone is part "Stand By Me", part "Pulp Fiction". There are some very adult, very disturbing themes included in this tale, including physical and sexual abuse. (I would encourage you to screen this short novel before letting your children read it.) It's an oddball combination that never really jives well and reads in a stilted, awkward fashion. For instance, a plot key plot line about shall we say, "creative imprisonment", is interrupted with a lenghthy description of the family laundry room. It felt as if Mr. Watson just need to fill the page. All these factors left this reader wondering, "Who was the author's intended audience?" The prose is constructed in such a way as to sugguest this could be a novel for young readers, but thematically, it wouldn't seem appropriate for many in that age group. (Again, know your child's maturity level and know the book before making a decision here. Don't just take my word for it.) On the other hand, if Mr. Watson was intending for adults to read this book, it's put together in a very juvenile fashion, sloppily executed (the main character, David, is amazingly PC in his "20/20" hindsight, especially considering his family culture and upbringing), with charicatured character development and scenery. I never felt "drawn in" by this particular story's setting, and I've seen better character development off the mass-marketed Best-Seller rack. The insights into the characters and their motives and emotions are thin at best. With the slow pacing and meandering storytelling, it was a tough 180 pages to finish. If you're looking for a great coming-of-age story taking place in rural America with stunning imagery and great characters, I have two alternate recommendations for you: 1) PLAINSONG, by Kent Haruf (also a more adult-oriented novel - quite quiet with fantastic characters); and 2) JIM THE BOY, by Tony Earley, which can be heartily enjoyed by young readers and adults alike.
Rating: Summary: montana 1948 Review: I really enjoyed reading this novel because it told a story of a family and how one problem changed the families' lives and how the town they lived in changed forever. The family was very important in the town because the father was the chief of police and was a well-respected man in the town. The mother worked for the town courthouse filing papers and organizing them. The sun David was the youngest and the one that tells it all. David speaks about how he lives and talks about his adventures with his friends and his families. He talks about his uncle and how his father (Wes) and his uncle don't get along because of the fact that David's grandfather (Julian) favors frank instead of Wes because uncle frank was a war hero and Wes staid home to take care of his town. David talks of the death of Marie little soldier and how it affected him in the inside as well as the way that he remembered her. He talks about his life after that incident with uncle frank and how it affected seeing his uncle after what had happened. Some of my favorite scenes from the book were when frank, Julian, and Wes all go to a bar out of town and start getting drunk and try to pick fight with the people in the bar. Another one of my favorite scenes was when David goes to get his dad because there are some men outside his house with a couple of guns, and while David goes and gets his dad, David's mom gets a shotgun and holds the men back from getting any closer. Another one of my favorite scenes was when wes arrested frank and instead of putting frank in a jail sail, wes put frank in his attic so that no one would find out what really happened. in conclusion I thought that this book had a lot of exciting moments and a lot of details that would leave you thinking. I would have to say that what I learned from this book was that family is more important than your reputation. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good book that will leave you guessing. So if I could I would have to say that I would read this book again.
Rating: Summary: Fantastico!!!! Review: I enjoyed reading Montana 1948 for many reasons. It was a positive experience for me because the name didn't catch my attention so if it weren't for my class, I never would have picked up this book to read it and I really enjoyed it. One of the best parts in the book was the development of all the characters. They were all described really well in detail and I was able to picture them all in my head. For example David describes Marie when she is sick, he says, "Her cheeks now glowed so brightly they looked painful, as if they had been rubbed raw, her eyes seemed darker than ever, all pupil, black water that swallowed light and gave nothing back." I would not make any changes in this book because it was great. I liked the story it told as well as all the characters. The author kept me interested through out the whole book. One great part was when Marie got sick then she got better then all of a sudden she died. I liked that part, not because she died but because it was un expected. In conclusion, I enjoyed this book enough to recommend it to my friends because it fun when you understand it and get into it enough.
Rating: Summary: gotta read it Review: I did not really enjoy Montana 1948, but I started to like it later on in the book. This book has a lot of interesting parts. This book is a positive experience for me because I never read a novel at school like this. I think every school should read this book because it has a lot of viewpoints. The author did not hold my interest in the beginning of the book. Therefore towards the middle and the end the book caught my attention in a "can't be happening way." I couldn't understand why did Uncle Frank rape those Indian girls. I would change all the bad things that happen in the book because the Indians lives were treated like some kind of slaves. The other thing that I would change is the way that Uncle Frank was acting. I would make him only like older woman or just chop his wee wee off. I would recommend this book to a friend because it has a lot of good parts to it. It has many things that happen in the past in it, such as slaver and Indians getting raped. So if there is someone you know that has been sexually abused, or you have been sexually abused make sure you tell some one about it or you can get hurt or someone related to you.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I enjoyed reading Montana 1948, because it was an unusual type of novels we read at school. It also had an interesting plot. I also enjoy how the author used interesting phrases that kept my attention throughout the whole story. I think that Montana 1948, did give me a positive experience, because I learn about molesters and about telling the truth. I also learn about the different kinds of traditions in each families. Montana 1948, had very interesting characters throughout the whole story. The characters seem very believable because their attitudes were like normal people are now a days. The description of the also made it believable for example when he describe Marie, "Marie was neither small nor shy she loved to laugh and talk, and she was a great tease, specialize in outrageous lies about everything from strange animal behavior to bloody murders." The author was able to describe the characters in a understanding way. In my point of view I liked all the characters I had no favorites because all of them had something unique and interesting. I believe that the author was able to hold my attention throughout the entire novel. He was able to do that because he used interesting phrases that caught my attention. Also the whole story was pretty interesting. What also hold my attention to the novel was the fact that it is a unusual type of novel that we read at school. The topics of the novel were very dramatic that they caught my attention right away. In conclusion I would recommend this novel to my fellow students, because it was a very interesting and unusual novel. What I learned from this novel was that the most normal looking person can turn out to be something you would never think about them, for example a molester.
Rating: Summary: elsie's Montana 1948 review Review: I enjoyed Montana 1948, was a book that took my attention. This book is author by Larry Watson. Its something you don't read every day Its interesting plot. It was a positive experience cause you don't know that people you trust can be molester. it's a book almost saying don't trust nobody. Montana really did hold my attention it's a book your be surprise about people and thing you never though anyone will do. I would of change the beginning cause it has a slow star but once is that is over the good thing star coming out. After all you learn from this book that you can trust no one in this world. I would recommend this book too all teenagers if any of you been hurt or touch by some one and never told anyone about it. Don't stay with your mouth close.
Rating: Summary: boring Review: I really did not enjoy reading Montana 1948 because it was very uninteresting and it did not make any sense. The characters were very lame. I saw absolutely no point in this story. This story wasn't very unbelievable because a sheriff cannot lock their brother in the basement. The author was not able to hole my interest during the story because it was so slow and he wrote a bunch of nonsense. I really didn't have a favorite part in the book. The most exciting part though was when Frank killed himself, and that wasn't even all that cool. If I could change any parts of the book I would just write the whole book over, because it need s more action. I learned from the book that the Indians weren't liked back then, I also learned that the law was very messed up back in 1948. I really didn't gain much from reading Montana 1948 it was just a waste of my good learning time. I personally wouldn't recommend this book to anyone because I wouldn't want him or her to be bored out of his or her mind.
Rating: Summary: Slow lagging Book Review: Our English class Just got done reading Montana 1948. In my opinion I felt there were things I liked and disliked about this novel. For example, I liked the conflict of the story between good and evil and the battle of the brother that sheriff Wes had to face. What I did not like about the novel was that it lagged and was slow for most of the story. I think the only interesting character was uncle Frank. The reason I believe he was the most interesting was because he had a good and side to him. On his good side he was known as a good rounded athlete, and a successful doctor, but his evil side was a perverted doctor who liked to molest young Indian girls. I think the author could have done a better job in creating the characters by giving each one more of a background. Through the entire novel the author was not able to hold my interest. While reading the story the only part that caught my attention was when the conflict was beginning to rise. I think that the novel lagged because it took a while for it to get to the point. My favorite scene out of the story was when they were finding out why Indian chicks had something against uncle Frank. I enjoyed reading the through this scene because it was more of the mysterious part of the story. What I also liked was that David's Mother knew for a fact that uncle Frank was a molester, while sheriff Wes disagreed and dud not want to belive that his own brother would be raping Indian chicks. The changes I would make to this story is put a lot more action, rather than it just being a slow talking drama story. I would have preferred to read this novel if it would have had a little more excitement to it. The whole conflict to the story was a little interesting but could not hold my attention throughout the whole book because it lagged on and on. I thought Montana 1948 could have been a lot better. The story lost my attention because it was a slow lagging talking drama novel that I would not recommend it to anyone who wants a book with a little excitement or humor in the book they read.
Rating: Summary: Montana 1948 Review: I enjoyed reading this novel it was very intresting. Except for the parts when the doctor would do unkind things to Indian girls. Reading this book was a positive experience for me because if it weren't for my teacher I would have never picked this book up. One of my favorite scene in this novel was when the sheriff through the doctor his brother in to the basement instead of the town prison the doctor commits suicide and the sheriffs family packed up and left town. One other scene I liked was when the little boy David seen his uncle comes out of the house, and the next day Marie died. The author was able to hold my interest thought out the entire novel. He did this by adding weird scenes thought out the whole book. Especially the parts when the doctor would do weird things to the Indian girls. I learned that that when you do the right thing there is always a price to pay. You will never live happily ever after. I would not recommend this book to my friends because I don't have friends.
