Rating: Summary: A let down Review: You really get let down with this one. This one one will make people not want to read the series. Everyone should start at the beging. Maybe even skip this one alltogether, you won't be missing much.
Rating: Summary: big disapointment-dont waste your money Review: I wouldnt reccomend this drivel to anyone. Her characters are one demensional, boring, yet they are always exquisitely beautiful-please!!I was expecting much more and as you can tell was very let down.It was a long, boring read that went no place. The dialogue is often trite and stilted. At times the story is vague.I reccomend that Ms Hamilton work on making her characters a little more believeable, and a little less perfect. If you are going to throw in Bdsm and sex,to sell your books,at least make it erotic. It was a big Yawn.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining but a bit disappointing Review: I do not want to see a moving van pull up next door and find that Anita Blake is going to be my new next-door neighbor. A fine and interesting person by herself, but I know that before long her house is going to have vampires sleeping in the basement and become a guest hostel for every lycanthrope in St. Louis. Plus it is guaranteed that there is going to be more shooting going on than I've ever seen before, and I work for a gun manufacturer. That being said, Narcissus in Chains was a terrific book to read and held my attention throughout. It is difficult to try to make the world of Anita Blake seem plausible with all of the strange supernatural challenges she faces, but the author spins the tale in a delightful and intriguing manner. The frustration with this book and with many of the Anita Blake series is that Anita has a lot of good friends, but she doesn't seem to appreciate them. She holds out on Dolph, the police sergeant who is investigating a huge shootout at her house despite the fact he's giving her tremendous breaks. Rafael, the powerful lycanthrope leader gives her his unqualified support in a shaky situation at considerable risk to himself and she doesn't say thank you. Sylvie, the feminine but secretly vicious lycanthrope also undertakes a lot of risk to herself to support Anita, and yet she fails to appreciate it. I want to reach into the book and shake Anita for being ungrateful. There are also many subplots that are left unresolved which frustates the reader. Dolph asks Anita for help and we don't find out what happens or if she follows through. Richard, her former fiance who should be her husband if I had anything to say about it, relates a tragic tale of one of his subordinates who inadvertently kills her husband on her wedding night. But again, there the reader is left wondering what happens to her. Despite all of the shortcomings, I still found this book to be entertaining. Readers should not let these shortfalls stop them from reading this book.
Rating: Summary: werewolf lovers beware Review: Okay, so so they don't have to, but if your a Richard lover I'd stay away from this book. I loved this book it was so much better than the one before. Anita finally got back to being Anita. Which In my mind is not caring what other people think and just do what she believes is right. I thought this book was wonderful, and I can't wait for Laurell K. Hamilton's next Anita Blake Book!
Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS BOOK Review: This probably won't be a very helpful review, but I just have to say that I started the series a month ago, read all the books in about a week, and Narcissus in Chains was the best one yet. Her stories and ideas just keep getting better and better. I just wish I was capable of imagining such fantastic ideas myself. YAY ANITA!!!!! SHE ROCKS!
Rating: Summary: Belt up for an Emotional Rollercoaster Ride Review: It looks like I am going to have to be the one to disagree. I loved Narcissus in Chains! I have been a Laurell K Hamilton fan from the very beginning, gobbling up everything that she has written. Why? Because she writes with such passion! She crosses borders, violates taboos and brings to life the darkest desires that are only whispered about in private. And in this setting, moral conflict, necessity, love, passion, and right vs. wrong take on a new character, unique to Laurell K Hamilton's characters. In Narcissus in Chains, I see the continuation of Anita's growth, not a degeneration of her character! She started out as a tough chick, that was emotionally isolated, defensive, and alone. She has had to grow, grow-up, and grow open to those who she thinks of as "hers". Anita's barriers are coming down, and she is learning to recognize her capacity to love, to care, and to protect. The changes that take place in all of the various personalities are necessary! If they all stayed the same, where would the fun be in that? It's actually rather amusing to see the discomfort that is being caused in Hamilton's readers. I guess we all need to grow some :)
Rating: Summary: Huge let down Review: The Anita Blake series started going down hill when plot, character development, and decent stories were pushed aside for as much sex and contrived sexual situations as possible. The series were great when Anita was actually WORKING as an animator and solving crimes on the side. I don't think she has been to work in the last two books. I say let Hamilton get all her erotica out in her new series (which is basically Anita Blake without the intial sex hangups) and get back to the basics with the Anita Blake series that we all know and love.
Rating: Summary: Incredibly disappointing Review: I got hooked with the Anita Blake series with Obsidian Butterfly. I found Anita Blake to be a strong, smart, attractive character, a woman who charts her own course amongst so many characters who would love to chart her course for her. But here, Anita Blake has lost her way, seems helpless at times, and unable to do anything except give in to the events surrounding her. Many people who might read this understand that her helplessness is not her fault, as she is afflicted with something I won't describe that causes her personality to change and her willpower to diminish. Nonetheless, her fault or not, she is far less interesting this way, and truthfully, things happen within this story that alter the way I will view her character from now on. Unfortunately, I view this book now as the end of the series, because Anita Blake no longer appeals to me as a human being.
Rating: Summary: confusing, silly, boring. Review: The first books in the Anita Blake series are really fun novels. Nothing Laurell Hamilton has ever written could classify as Great Literature, but she has the gift of entertaining storytelling. That is what makes this book so very dissappointing: what went before it was really engaging, fun reading. 'Narcissus in Chains' furthers the life story of Anita Blake, vampire hunter, a crime sleuthing tough woman with a triple handful of supernatural gifts. For this installment, though, the brains and mystery solving plotlines are thrown out the window in favor of cold, emotionless sex scenes (including one rather disturbing quasi-rape of our heroine by a well-endowed and overly enthusiastic stranger). The already large cast of characters of Anita's St. Louis is further added to, making this book confusing and hard to keep up with for readers unfamiliar with this series. The plot is rather meaningless, and key players from the earlier books act in completely irrational ways, very against their previously written personalities. New readers will wonder why there was so much buzz about this series in the first place. As a side note, let me assure you that the 'thumbs down' vibe of this review is NOT due to a dislike of either Ms.Hamilton or erotica in general. I liked a lot of her other work, and don't take offense to dramatic sex in my books. This one was just poorly written. Do yourself a favor, and pick up the beginning of this series, but stop before you hit the train wreck that is book 10.
