Summary: Even better than "Dark Side of the Light Chasers".....
Review: I really enjoyed this next book from Debbie. It solidifies what she talks about in her first book - owning the side of ourselves that we want to forget exists. Remember, the people around you know all your faults - but what is a fault to one is not a fault to another. By not owning all of ourselves, we deprive the world and those closest to us the opportunity to see who they really are! This book was worth the money, and I will read it over and over again.

Summary: Powerful message
Review: It is so easy to fall victim to playbacks from wayback (as Chris Alexander call them), but we all have choices about the life we live. Although we all know how to live a life of joy, it is always good to see it in print. I read this book together with "Creating Extraordinary Joy" by Chris Alexander - a combination that I can recommend.

Summary: Turning Knowledge Into Wisdom
Review: Reading " The Secret of the Shadow" inspired me to view what I perceived as roadblocks, trials, and tragedies in my life with new eyes. It encouraged me to take those experiences that felt like a curse and hold them up to the light of compassion and understanding in order to recognize and extract their value. This transformed what was once senseless in my life into a powerful gift. There is gold in the dark. The message is simple- the journey is anything but. We can all use the insights from Debbie; someone who has come out on other side and is willing to give us on this challenging and ultimately rewarding path. There can never be enough written about the kind of paradigm shift that needs to take place in our awareness if we are to appreciate and utilize what was once our deepest wounds. It takes courage, know how, and perseverance.
The countless examples Debbie Ford gives from her own life, and from the participants in her programs, helped my mind to stretch and open up to new possibilities for myself. I saw how deeply attached I was to 'my story' of suffering and struggle. I actually viewed it as some kind of noble virtue. I was able to see how much easier it is to blame circumstances and other people than to take responsibility for my life; especially when my blame was "unquestionably justifiable." How liberating it is to know that our "stories" can serve as guides to our higher purpose in life. They can actually reveal our Divine calling. To know that we can take EVERYTHING that has happened in our lives and make good use of it through extracting the wisdom is powerful beyond measure.
Nowhere in the book does Debbie imply that this paradigm shift is easy or quick. She knows there is no value in dwelling on how hard it can feel. Throughout the book, she does show us that how we respond to life is always a choice. There is nothing in this book that sages, saints, and masters throughout time have not already shared with us. The gift in this book is how to use that knowledge and turn it into powerful wisdom for ourselves. There can never be enough examples of this kind of teaching from ones that have traveled this long and dedicated path. "The Secret of the Shadow" opens a way for us to honor and bless our entire lives - the good, the bad, and the ugly. And isn't that the ultimate act of appreciation anyone can give to the Creator? I obviously love this book and recommend it highly for anyone seeking their purpose in life or trying to find the sense in the senselessness of their life or life in general.

Summary: The Secret of the Shadow
Review: Really good book. I've read alot of books that claim they will change your life. This one is living up to it. Since completing this book I have been able to "catch myself" when I'm back in my "story" and just having that realization is enough to change the normal outcome. But, Debbie gives you tools to get out of your story and get into a place where you feel powerful and in control.

I found the exercises in Chapt. 9 "Living Outside Your Story" particularly helpful and applicable in my life. I have a history of starting these kinds of books and never finishing them. It was such a joy to read this entire book, do all of the exercises and start seeing the benefits right away. My copy is underlined, highlighted, dog-eared, beat-up - - I loved it! I highly recommend this book!

Thank you, Debbie, for your work!

Summary: Nothing New, Nothing Important
Review: Take bits and pieces of various religions and psychological theories (notably Glasser's reality therapy and Frankl's logotherapy), throw it all in a blender, add plenty of vanilla to make it smell pretty and honey to make it sweet, and this adds up to life-changing philosophy? Just because someone writes well does not mean they have anything important, or new, to say. If you want something meaningful, read Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" and mix that with genuine spiritual advice from someone who isn't just trying to make everything all nice. Carl Jung, who invented the modern concept of the shadow, would be appalled at this commercialism. If you want a deep, meaningful look at Jungian philosophy (archetypes) and its application to life, read Robert Bly's "Iron John".

Summary: Excellent Self-Help Book
Review: The Secret of the Shadow is insightful and provides a guide by which to uncover your "shadows". The best parts are the multitude of examples Debbie Ford provides to better illustrate the topics she is presenting in her book. In each example, you may see a small part of yourself which helps guide you down a path to uncovering the shadows. I purchased the tapes, which allow me the opportunity to listen while commuting to work. By the time I arrive to a busy day requiring patience and creativity in software development and marketing, I find additional strength to understand the actions and reactions of others and make use of my skills to create better outcomes. This book has been a valuable tool to help in what otherwise would be a very stress-filled day. Thank you to Debbie Ford. I look forward to more!
