Summary: Intriguing story and wonderful plot.
Review: A Gail Carson Levine success! This book is a compelling read and will have you finish it quickly. Dave Caros is a Jewish rascal living in New York city with his father, Abraham Caros, his brother, Gideon, and his father's wife ,Ida, who doesn't care beans about Gideon or Dave. Out of the blue one day Abraham Caros breaks his neck when he is out. After the funeral processing Ida begins to complain and make relatives have sympathy for her by saying out loud, "How can I raise these 2 kids. I can't take them. Somebody take them." Gideon is lucky and his uncle takes him, but no one claims Dave. Dave is instead sent to HHB Hebrew Home For Boys also known as Hell Hole for Brats. Dave takes a special carving that his father gave him with him and it is taken away by Mr.Meltzer, the mean, money lover, who takes care of the elevens. Dave doesn't hesitate on plans to get his carving and run away. During this book Dave finds friends who are loyal to death, a lovely girl who he becomes friends with, a mad superintendent who will even kill students for all he cares if they insult him, and how to forgive relatives who should have been forgiven a while back. This is a good read.

Summary: Dave is a Survivor
Review: Abandoned by relatives after the death of his father, Dave is determined to survive. As a reader you will cheer his attitude but your heart will ache for his hurt and his situation. There is truly awful villain running the orphanage but the friends or "buddies" he makes there are true blue. I loved this story and the historical setting. This is a very interesting book that boys and girls will enjoy.

Summary: A comment...
Review: According to factual reports from orphans of the period, most of the Jewish orphanages were warm, compassionate places, and the orphans - now elderly - have memories of joyful years spent there.

Summary: An entertaining book........
Review: Dave an 11 year old rascal becomes an orphan when his father dies and his stepmother is unable to take care of him. Dave ends up at the Hebrew Home for Boys better known as the HHB, an orphanage for boys. Here he learns the true meaning of friendship, as well as the lesson that not all people are nice and trustworthy. The writing is somewhat dramatic. Dave vividly explains his feelings after losing his papa and the love for his newfound friends. However, the book is not written with a serious tone. There are numerous scenes that are comical and depict Dave for the pure rascal he is. The reader laughs and wonders how will Dave ever get out of each predicament, but some how Dave manages to get out of them only to get into another. Dave has many experiences at the orphanage and they change the way the he perceives people and life in general.

Summary: Dave at Night
Review: Dave at Night is a wonderful story of an eleven-year-old boy whose whole world is suddenly turned upside down. Dave just can't get a break. His mother died giving birth to him. He has just buried his father, who died in an accident. Gideon, Dave's only brother, deserts him and goes to live with their uncle, and Dave's step-mother decides that she can't raise Dave on her own. Her only alternative is to deposit Dave at the HHB (Hebrew Home for Boys).

Dave's always been a mischievous boy. His father even called him Dave the Rascal. Now that Dave is on his own to make friends, learn rules, dodge bullies and take care of himself. Making friends is easy enough. All of the elevens are "buddies" and look out for each other. Dave's main nemesis is Mr. Doom, the headmaster of the HHB. The first time Dave sneaks out of the HHB, Mr. Doom nearly kills him.

However, things are not all bad at the HHB. He has his buddies. He has his newly found love of art. Now he's found new friends on the outside. He befriends an old gonif, Solly, who leads him to Irma Lee, the prettiest girl Dave had ever seen.

Through vivid descriptions and simplistic, yet precise language, Gail Carson Levine portrays the life of Dave Caros, a young boy stuck in an orphanage during the 1920s. From the streets of Harlem to the luxurious parties in Irma Lee's house, Dave has quite an adventure. This is well worth the time!

Summary: Dave At Night
Review: Dave At Night was rated from 1 to 5 and it was a 4.5 stars. I would give it a 5 because this story is sort of adventure and a little history in it. This kid named Dave went a school full of rich kids. One day he came home something happened to his father. His step-mother sent him to an orphanage it is called the HHB. One night Dave sneaks out of the orphanage and went out to see places near the orphanage. Then he met his grandfather and they did some fun things. One night he goes out but doesn't come back and at the end his grandfather tells them he is going with them. The warden that was there was very mad, but he showed only a smile but he was furious.
He said that he can go but he was very wired that the kid would protest to how they treated the children there. I gave this book a 5 because it was a good book to read, and I hope you will like it too.

Summary: Dave at Night
Review: Dave at Night, by Gail Carson Levine, is about a boy named Dave Caros, who becomes an orphan and is sent to live at an orphanage called the Hebrew Home for Boys. Dave Caros, Irma Lee, and Solly are the main characters in the story. Dave is a troublemaker who is always running into problems at the orphanage. One of these problems is that he has to make a big decision. He must decide whether to stay at the HHB forever, or would he find a way to escape his freezing cold orphanage and live secretly in one of his friend's basement. At first his mind is set on leaving the HHB as soon as possible, but then after one nerve racking thing that happens, he's not sure what to do. At the beginning, before he leaves, there is something he must take, no matter what. The problem is that the dreaded, Mr. Bloom is guarding the item. One night, Dave decides he might as well try to find a way to get outside the orphanage so that he can escape easily once he takes his item. He finds a very easy way out and has a great time exploring the neighborhood that night. Then, when he tries to go back in the orphanage, he is caught and has a huge fist fight with Mr. Bloom, the headmaster.

I think the fight is the best part of the book because of the way he describes what is going on. Irma Lee also has a problem. She promised Dave that he can secretly live in her basement once he escapes. Once she thinks about it though, she realizes that her mother will almost definitely find out and then she and Dave will be in huge trouble. She knows that Dave can't live in her basement, but she doesn't want to let her friend down. She is my favorite character because she always has so much energy and always wants to play games and sports and is always very funny.

Solly too had a problem. Once Dave finds out that he can't live with Irma Lee, he asks Solly if they can live together. Solly desperately wants to help Dave because they have become quite good friends, but he has a hard job and is not always very healthy. He has to think of something to do with Dave, but what?

I think Dave at Night is a wonderfully written book. I can relate to how Dave feels when Mr. Bloom calls him into his office after he sneaks out. One time in third grade, I forgot to do a whole poster for school. At school that day I knew what was coming and when my teacher called on me to share my project and I told her I hadn't done it, it looked like she was going to blow up. That is also how the author described Mr. Bloom's face when he is punishing Dave. The one thing that I would like to change is when Dave sneaks out and goes to his first party where he meets Irma Lee. Nothing exciting happens and the author is a just a little too detailed. I would make something exciting happen like someone from his orphanage is there so he has to hide from that person.

I would definitely recommend this book because the story is funny yet serious and sad yet happy. The author also does a very good job on describing each scene so it feels like the reader is there in the orphanage, or at the rent parties, or on the city streets. The thing that I liked best about this book is that I always wanted to keep on reading it, and I think that everyone else will feel the same way.

Summary: Dave at Night
Review: Dave At Night
It was eleven o'clock. You could hear a pin drop. Dave tiptoed down the hallway. He opened the door. He's out of the home! He moves towards the gate. He grabs the handle. It's locked! This is just one of the parts in the great book Dave at Night by Gail Carson Levine.
First of all I would like to tell you why I liked this book so much. One of those reasons is that the genre was historical fiction and that genre is one of my all time favorite genres. Also I liked this book because everyone in the story was nice to each other except Mr. Bloom. The only reason I disliked the book was because of the beginning. The beginning is so boring because there was no action what so ever and I like books that jump right into the action.
Now I'll give you a little teaser of a summary. In the beginning Dave's dad falls off the roof of a house he was building and dies. Then Dave's stepmom cannot and will not take care of Dave so he is sent to the H.H.B. or Hebrew Home for Boys (or as Dave calls it Hell Hole for Brats) in New York, New York. When Dave is there he discovers that eleven year old has his own "bully" who eats the eleven's food and bosses them around. Also he discovers that he can sneak out of the home every night he wants to. Then one time when Dave comes back from one of his adventures Mr. Bloom (or as Dave calls him Mr. Doom) is waiting for him. Then Mr. Doom brings Dave in to his office and starts to yell out questions. Then when Dave doesn't answer Mr. Doom starts to beat Dave and... To find out what happens to Dave and what he does when he sneaks out you'll have to read the book yourself.
