Rating: Summary: One of the best Review: I am reading this book for the second time, after having read all the others in order and enjoying every one of them. After the TV version I felt compelled to go back and re-read the book to find all the discrepancies and distortions that kept me shaking my fist at the TV screen and saying, "That wouldn't have happened that way!" Hillerman writes a good mystery; but, more than that, he evokes a time and place in his kindly and careful delineation of the Navajo culture of the Southwest. The tension among the various characters is sensitive and real. No stereotypes here. He is such a good writer that the writing does not draw attention to itself. There are no snags or quagmires to get in the way of the pure pleasure of a good story. Meanwhile, Hillerman is teaching us about the Navajo people in a way that textbooks and lectures cannot.

Rating: Summary: Exciting and Mysterious Review: I found Chee's interest in training to be a shaman fascinating. He is the one with the people skills which is what makes people at the Tribal Police and the Navajos like and trust him (in my opinion is what helps make or break a case. Knowing how people tick and getting them to trust and confide in you. Going by the book doesn't always break a case.)Even better is Chee's acceptance of his background, while Leaphorn, the big city detective, relies more on "white" ways to solve murders by going strictly by the book. I really don't find Chee "flaky" as one reviewer put it. There are more than one way to look at things and Chee and Leaphorn represent this. The whole bit about skinwalkers was wonderful and adds considerable suspense to the story.
Rating: Summary: Leaphorn needs to work on his people skills! Review: I found Chee's interest in training to be a shaman fascinating. Rating: Summary: I learnt something Review: I like this book because of the concept of the skinwalkers. I am happy to not have to beleive in them but it is fascinating to have a small door to a completely different culture opened. Not to mention he is the best detective novellist.
Rating: Summary: damn this book was boring Review: it looks ok and starts halfway interesting, but once you get 50 pages into the book it becomes unbearable. he walks around the desert trying to find some murderers. i had to read this for school and it was torture.
Rating: Summary: Tony Hillerman & Skinwalkers Review: My book is about a mystery that goes on in the Navajo Nation. The characters in the book are victims that are bothered in the night. The main characters in the book goes on a investagation to find the culprit of the raids in the night. The characters name is Jim Cheeand he is one of the people that are afraid of the night. He as a cat that doesn't go out at night to hunt because it is to scared. The book takes place in Farmington and Shiprock, Chinle. It all started with a gun shot near Jim Chee's house. The police try to help him find the skinwalker that is bmessing around with him. Some of the stories that go around the Navajo Nation are true. The stories are mainley about skinwalkers that are messing with people. The book is really cool because it really twist your mind. I also think that people that read it is going to get scared because I got scared reading it in the night. My mom bought me the book because she thought I would it and I did. I gave the book five stars because it is a reality thing. They made a movie about it but I never got the chance to see it. The book is very interesting and it really takes your breath away. Some people have already read it and they probably think it's really cool. I also think the author really is bringing southwest alive and making it interesting.
Rating: Summary: a light mystery evokes Navajo country Review: On my second Hillerman mystery I am struck by how simple and easy his prose is: schoolkids could easily read and enjoy this writing. Adult readers, though, will be entertained by a quick and absorbing read. This book has a very rushed ending--I'd like to see Hillerman take more time, more words, to tell his tale.
Rating: Summary: Great mystery, better character development! Review: Reading the Hillerman Navajo mystery series is a joy, and this addition to the series is wonderful! If you have been reading the series, this book will intrigue you and allow you to see sides of the two main characters, Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, that you have not yet seen. The first book of the series to join Leaphorn and Chee, Hillerman develops the inner character of both men and this provides further reason to follow the series. The men are very real with their everyday concerns and their doggendness in their pursuit of the solution to the mystery. Hillerman ties the reader to the charcters without pulling at the heartstrings of the reader - in other words, it is not a sappy read, but one that makes one feel they are involved with real people in a desolate, intriguing setting. The mystery is the best of the series to date, one that has twists, turns, and surprises. As always, the feel of the Navajo culture and the conflicts with the surrounding culture is present. Well researched and set in the time of the late 1980s, this book gives the reader a true life feel. If you are a Hillerman fan, you will love this book. If this is your first look at the Hillerman series, I would strongly recommend reading the series in order - the story within the novels will unravel much more clearly.
Rating: Summary: This Book is a Wonderful Murder Mystery Review: Skinwalkers by Tony Hillerman is a wonderful and intriguing action packed book filled with suspense, magic, and savage death! Multiple unsolved homicides bring Officer Jim Chee and Lt. Joe Leaphorn together to try to find a connection or reason for all the mindless killing. This compelling tale takes you into a world of Navajo Lore and strange curses. This book kept me on the edge of my seat every minute I was reading it and kept me guessing who did it! Whether Jim Chee was being shot at or Joe Leaphorn was incognito in enemy territory; it was suspenseful the whole way through! Reading Skinwalkers really makes you think, I was always trying to figure out who killed who and why throughout the whole book! It was nice to not have the answer be obvious. This was one of the best books I've read in a while because it is so captivating and thrilling! Although this is a wonderful book and I loved reading it, there are parts in the middle that get pretty dull. But if you love murder mysteries you will enjoy every grueling plot-twisting event! This was a truly excellent book and anyone who loves murder mysteries should read it.
