Summary: a loving daughter's tribute
Review: "The Best Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis," selected and introduced by Caroline Kennedy, is a beautiful book which is both a memorial to our former First Lady and a testimonial to how cultured and informed she was.

The volume is also a short course in poetry, as it spans the centuries & includes works by such renowned authors as Langston Hughes, William Shakespeare, Homer, W.B. Yeats, Emily Dickinson, e.e. cummings, and Robert Frost.

Onassis' beloved poems reveal her in depth in a manner the newspapers could not, as a patriotic American, a loving bride, a thinker, a dreamer, an adventurer, a humorist, a poet, and perhaps most of all, a dedicated and loving mother.

Surely there is no better tribute to a mother than to have a loving child publish such a book.

Summary: Amazingly Beautiful
Review: A very good friend of mine gave me this beautiful collection for Christmas and it is one of my most favorite gifts to date. As a great admirer of both Jackie Kennedy and poetry I was delighted to find that the book not only featured beautiful poetry but a truly in-depth view of Jackie Kennedy as well. The same friend who gave me this book pointed out that so much can be learned about people based on the books and poems that they treasure and this was undeniably the case for me with this remarkable collection. The book, lovingly compiled by Caroline Kennedy, features poetry with themes ranging from Childhood, National Pride, Equality, Romance and Inspiration. It includes well- known poems such as `She Walks in Beauty' by Lord Byron to lesser known poems such as `When a Beggar Beholds You' (author unknown) illustrating Jackie Kennedy's dedication to the written word and her talent as an editor to collect and treasure remarkable beauty in literature. Caroline Kennedy also does a remarkable job of providing the reader with very poignant and touching family memories revolving around her mother's genuine appreciation of poetry and literature and how this love was passed on to her as well as how she continues to pass this love onto her own family. In fact, Caroline Kennedy also included some of her children's favorite poems including the lovely `He Wishes For the Heavens' Cloths' by Alfred Lord Tennyson showing that Jackie Kennedy Onassis' love of beauty and literary genius lives on with her grandchildren. Within these pages there are also beautiful pictures of the family as well as touching and heartwarming poetry written by Jackie Kennedy herself. Amazingly beautiful, this collection is a delight for all readers as well as a powerful tribute to an extraordinary girl, woman, wife, mother and icon.

Summary: A Faithful Tribute
Review: As a widely published poet with my debut mystery novel in its initial release, I found THE BEST-LOVED POEMS OF JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS an enjoyably study. Having been a child in the first grade when President Kennedy was shot (I recall watching the custodian lower our school flag while explaining to myself and two friends what had just happened in Dallas), I am glad their daughter Caroline pulled together this collection of poetry that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis loved the most. I enjoyed reading it. I am certain others will too. I recommend it highly.

Summary: WHAT A LOVELY TRIBUTE TO A MOTHER!
Review: Caroline Kennedy has put together a collection of her mother's best loved poems and what a wonderful tribute the book makes to a very special lady. Some will say the book tells us little about Jackie herself, but, on the contrary, it tells us a great deal about Jackie's character and personality from the poems that she collected, wrote and cherished. If one reads between the lines, one sees the real Jackie emerge, sometimes melancholy, often romantic, and occasionally elusive as if looking for an escape. So, yes, the book does, indeed, tell us much about Jackie's inner-most thoughts, dreams and fears.

Jackie will forever be remembered for her grace, style and charisma by those who recall her days in the sun. During her final days, she became almost a shadow-figure to the public, but in our hearts we will always remember her for the beautiful person she was, her infectious smile, her love for her children and the mark she left upon the world. She was a lady one might think "had it all in her lifetime" but as we all know, she paid a very heavy price. The poems in this book are an inside look at a woman whose inner-strength and beauty shone upon others in every corner of the world.

Summary: This was a sentimental purchase
Review: I bought this book with the intention of giving it as a gift and wound up keeping it for myself. It is, first and foremost, a loving tribute to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis from her daughter. But it also happens to be a terrific collection of poetry!

Summary: puh-lease
Review: I cannot deny the sentimental attractiveness of this book, but it does not work as an anthology of poetry. The emphasis is on the celebrity, not the poetry. These poems may or may not be worth while, but the fact that Caroline Kennedy uses them as a tribute to her mother (however lovely that sentiment) completely diminishes the poetry as poetry. That Jackie cherished these poems misses the point entirely, for then the only reason to read these poems is to come into contact with Jackie's ghost, not the poetry itself. If you genuinely love poetry, you understand that it is the poetry itself that can save and sustain us--not whether Michael Jackson's editor found comfort or solace or delight in them.

This is a great book for those who don't read poetry--or those who buy books of poetry by Jewel.
