Rating: Summary: Great book, but I am confused about an item on page 190. Review: I keep dwelling on an item in the first full paragraph on page 190 regarding the sunken Soviet Golf class submarine. The authors say "The Navy had estimated that the Golf had slammed into the ocean bottom at as much as 200 knots." It seems to me that 20 knots would make more sense. Can anyone tell me if this is simply an error or might I have been absent from my physics class on the day such things were discussed?
Rating: Summary: A pretty good read Review: As one who spent his brief military carrer looking for subs I was fascinated by the exploits of these guys. Crewman who operate these ships are a unique breed and the chances some of these guys have taken reflect that. I was a bit surprised at some of the info devulged and I wonder how much of it is guess work on the authors part and how much is fact. When playing "games" with these guys it was obvious to me they were very serious in their work. Also, the damage done by the spys arrested in the 80's that sold out their countrymen (submariners) was horrendous. It is most fortunate we didn't get invovlved in a situation where we would have needed those subs. Regardless of what one thinks of the military these guys put it on the line regularly. I'm sure the Navy is highly upset about much of this book. A good book!
Rating: Summary: Tom Clancy-like but True. Fantastic Book Review: Right up there with Sink The Bismarck! and The Boat. The X-Files or James Bond can find new grist for scripts in this book. Great notes and details too.
Rating: Summary: Much Ado about Nothing Review: As a layperson (with no specialized knowledge of military history either), I can't imagine that anything in this book should be considered "classified". Nearly every story appears to be old news; further, no story appears "controversial". Don't buy this book if you expect to be entertained with "inside" information about cold war submarining. The best section of the book I found to be the Appendix, where Soviet war stories were briefly recounted--it seems the Soviets, having inferior equipment, took the brunt of punishment in submarine warfare.
Rating: Summary: Reads like fiction Review: I hade the pleasure (?) to serve onboard the USS Seawolf from 1976 until 1980. During that time we completed three missions of the type discussed in this book. Until I read this book I had only a generalized knowledge of the significance of those missions and the planning and organization which was required to pull them off. Having the opportunity to read about our exploits in "Blind Man's Bluff" increases the pride that I've always felt about my service onboard "The Wolf". It truly was an historic time served with courageous and intelligent men. What a wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: GREAT!!!!! Review: This is a great read for anyone interested in either inteligence operations in the cold war, submarine warfare, or naval operations in general. This was fun to read.
Rating: Summary: Much ado about nothing, or at least about very little. Review: Perhaps I am jaded by 26 years as an intelligence professional but this book seems to be one good magazine article's worth of material stretched into a book. The author's describe several items of some passing value but mainly what they do is rehash a litany of information readily available in open source material. This is simply one of those books that promises much and delivers very little. I would suggest that the interested reader can find out more by using a good search engine and investing an hour or so at the computer. I must report, having been on the inside, that if the complete story could be told, it would be much more interesting and provacative.
Rating: Summary: Fine Research, Superb Story That Had To Be Told Review: I'm only 1/3 of the way through this and can already recommend it wholeheartedly. A great read if you are interested in the Cold War, Military History, and Sea Stories. This is what brave men did while Clinton and Quale and the rest of their invertebrate ilk made excuses. We who remain free owe these submariners a great debt.
Rating: Summary: This book is as close as non-fiction gets to Tom Clancy Review: It was a quick read. Remember though it is mostly an episode by episode kind of thing, for the most part suspense builds within a chapter, not through the whole book. Consequently, there is no huge climax at the end, but it's a quick read nonetheless.
Rating: Summary: Excellent overall with some disappointing omissions. Review: I was one of the behind- the- scenes scientists on Project Jennifer and found chapter 9 especially enjoyable. A bit of trivia, a paper on our research appeared in Applied Optics the same month that the Times ran the story on Glomar Explorer. Coincidence?I was disappointed that the adventures of "Willy the Hip" were not covered. He was a legendary sub skipper and his trip reports read better than a Tom Clancy novel.
