Summary: Very good book to read (or listen to)!
Review: I really enjoyed listening to this book (I borrowed the audiotape version from the library!). The actors reading the book were very good getting into the various characters, especially the actor reading the male part. Terry McMillan did an excellent job introducing you to each character, and she expressed each character's inner thoughts about themselves and those they interact with. The book is complete with moments that are happy, dramatic, funny, heartbreaking, and sad...most of the elements that make up family life anyway. At the end, there were areas of some characters' lives left open, making me think McMillan is planning a sequel!

Summary: lacking
Review: This is the third book of Terry's I've read. I felt there was something lacking from this book, and it seems to me that Terry's stories always end so abruptly. It's as if she's trying to keep her books to a 400-page minimum and is forced to end her stories neatly and quietly, rushing to explain and gloss over how the story ends. As I'm reading, the author explains to the hilt, but yet during her final chapter, everything is just glossed over and/or left hanging. And did I miss something while reading this? What happened with Janelle's pregnancy? The author kept bringing it up, bringing it up, and then: we hear no more of what happened. Did she have it, give it away, abort it...? Maybe I skipped those pages where it was explained. The concept was interesting and from the reviews, I thought this book would be a little humorous and a little more interesting. I was disappointed. There was a lot of rambling and the story really didn't fit together too well.

Summary: A compelling and universal family saga
Review: This is the best work by Terry McMillan I've read so far (though I haven't gotten to Disappearing Acts yet). There are six viewpoint characters -- Viola, her estranged husband Cecil, and their four grown children, which could be confusing. But McMillan excels at making each character's "voice" distinct. You never wonder who is "speaking" even though the first person narrators shift from chapter to chapter. In this family saga each family member has individual issues worthy of a soap opera, and each chapter has a cliffhanger end as McMillan certainly knows how to tell a story. She's also terrific at dialogue. As other reader reviewers have said, the family dynamics -- the sibling rivalry, a long-lasting marriage that's heading toward divorce court, and Viola's concerns about the way her kids are living their lives -- are universal, and you don't have to be African-American to appreciate them. The main criticism I have, again as others have noted, is that the ending is too pat, the loose ends tied up too tidily. It's a long book, but McMillan seems in a rush to ensure a happy ending. She also has a bit of a tendency to moralize; a few times I felt I was hearing the author speak rather than her character. But this is a minor criticism of a compelling family saga.

Review: This book is excellent, when I first started reading it, I did not know what to expect, but it went above and beyond the call of duty in satisfying my reading passion. Pick up this book. It is a must have for your collection.

Review: This might be the best book I ever read besides The Coldest Winter Ever. I forgot about all the characters since it's been a long time but believe me, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. Terry did an outstanding job on it.

Summary: One of Terry's best
Review: A day late and a dollar short is one of Terry Mcmillan's best books. A powerful moving story about a black family coming to terms with the unresolved past issues of both individual family members and the family as a whole, this book is full of rich multilayered characters, crackling dialogue, and powerful emotions. I recommend reading it twice because you will miss a lot of things from the first reading. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with this one, it is a page turner that you will not be able to put it down!

Summary: She's done it again!
Review: I am one devoted Terry McMillan fan. And I must say this... Terry has out done herself with ADLAADS! This novel started out slow and at first I wasn't feelin' the story at all. However, after reading a couple of chapters I found myself unable to put this book down.The Price's family matriarch Viola narrated the characters history to its reader. I laughed at the comical storylines in this book and ultimately cried at the ending. The six main characters Viola, Cecil, Parris, Lewis, Janelle and Charlotte are vivid and colorful. Their personalites were skillfully developed by its author. Each character had their own drama and heartache. This is definitely a powerful read! I can't wait to see if this novel makes it to the big screen. Ms. McMillan... Keep the Creativity Flowing!

Summary: I consider this one of the best I have ever read!
Review: I consider this book to be one of the best I have ever read I have been reading Terry McMillian since 2000 and I have to say she has not written a book yet that was disappointing. This novel has a character for everyone of my family members and when I was reading it I was relating to these characters on a personal level that is truly amazing that I was able to do that with a novel because with most novels I'm unable to get that depth but this one was different. It was such a great novel that I recommended it to my Mom and Aunt and my Aunt is currently reading and loving ever moment of it. I consider this to be a keeper

Summary: I Was Wrong!
Review: I think I reviewed this book before and gave Ms. McMillian a bad review. Well I must admit that I was wrong. One day out of sheer boredom I picked up my copy of this book determined to get past that first chapter. I just finished reading the whole book and I am upset with myself that I doubted Terry's abilities. This book is the best of all the books. By the time I got to the end of this book I was nearly in tears. This book tells it like it is in some families. The family in this bok could have been my crazy family. I will never again doubt that this girl has talent. If you buy the book the first chapter will drive you crazy, hell skip it and get to the good part you won't regret it.
