Rating: Summary: Terry, you nailed it. . . Review: You really did. . . without spoiling the second half of the book for everyone who hasn't finished it, I want to say that when it comes to, well, one other reader called it Viola's misfortune, you got everything about her kids' reactions right. Dead on from the emotions right down to the physical reactions. I went through this same thing a few months back -- and Ms. McMillan, you took my breath away you got it all so right. Black or white. . . anyone who has been there can totally relate. This is one amazing job of writing.
Rating: Summary: ALL GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME Review: When I read books by Ms. McMillian it takes me home to my family and people in my life. I also live in the Bay Area as does Ms McMillian, and it's wonderful the way she involves our area into her stories. Bottom line: This is just another wonderful piece of work by the Master Ms. Millian! I applaud her!
Rating: Summary: Finally! Review: Thank you, Terry McMillan. Not since Disappearing Acts (my personal favorite) have I enjoyed a book so much. The characters were well developed Viola, Paris, Charlotte, Janelle and Lewis, I know these people! I appreciated the family tree, especially in the beginning, I referred to it often. From the very beginning, I got caught up in the drama of the Price clan. Jerry Springer's guests have nothing on this family. The story of each member's lives and experiences were wonderfully told, each person's experiences affecting the other. Jealousy, envy and stubbornness can really take it's toll and ruin an otherwise loving family. Even during a tragedy, the family can't seem to get it together.
Rating: Summary: TERRY IS DEFINITELY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I think this is the best book I have read in all of 2000 and probably all of 2001! Without giving away the whole story line, it is ashame that families don't get along when the ones they love are alive and when they die, they finally get it together and love each other like they never have before. I loved all the characters and how they evolved. Their problems were realistic for the order of their birth. The oldest generally feels they have to be strong for the family and know everything. The youngest usually feels that they can't make a decision because everyone makes it for them. Paris and Janelle fit the description to a T. The best character of all was of course, Ms. Viola Price. Our Mamas always know what is best for us even when we think they don't know what is going on. And as usual Moms have the last word. Viola knew her children, husband and grandchildren and she wasn't about to let anyone do them wrong. She was a true Matriarch. I started this book on Sunday and couldn't put it down until Wednesday night. This book reads like a real life event. It isn't dry in any spaces and it never drags on. I think everyone will be able to relate to a character of some characteristics of one. I won't say who I relate to, but it is in there. I agree with Ms. McMillan that this wouldn't make a good movie, but a good television series. It is too much like the movie 'Soul Food', but I hope see great things happen for this book. Terri, it was well worth the wait and I hope to see more of this type of book in the future!
Rating: Summary: Extremely Good!!!! Review: Let me begin with just letting out a breath of fresh air. I'm so glad to know that there is another family that is similiar to mine, in one way or another. This is clearly her best work yet. I hate we had to wait 3yrs for this novel. Terry gave us the goods on this one. Lets start off with how easy it is to read this book. 400 pages sounds like alot, but you will finish it in no time flat. A very easy page turner. You are always wondering what Vy is going to say next. The characters are beyond real you can relate with every last one of them. I have even figured out which one I was. I could even tell which character was talking, just by the words they were saying. You can feel each person, and their own personal struggle. The mom (Vy) was the life of the book, but her kids took the show sometimes. I'm glad to know that in the end we are still family and no one can break that bond. I even got teary eyed on the last 100 pages or so. If anyone says this isn't a good book apparently has never been through the struggles of trying to keep a family together. This is a must read. If your library doesn't have it, then you must go purchase. It is totally different than anything she has written(and I have read all of them). You will truly enjoy this one. Believe me you will LOL!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Great Read! Review: A Day Late and a Dollar Short takes an intimate look at the lives of the members of the Price family. The perfect and controlling sister is despised by the middle sister for her perceived perfection while baby sister seems lost in an ever gushing river of self doubt and the brother tries to find his salvation at the bottom of a liquor bottle. Mom and Dad separate after over 30 years of marriage, Dad finds a lesser love but greater peace in the folds of a younger woman, while Mom endeavors to experience the finer things in life before its too late. McMillian excels at creating familiar and realistic characters struggling with recognizable familial issues (at times I thought a couple of the characters were relatives of mine!). The novel is funny and sad, edifying and healing. The Price family puts the FUN is dysFUNctional and McMillian tells their story with the skill of well-trained raconteur.
Rating: Summary: Sorry Terry, not "A DAY LATE"-try right on time! Review: A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT introduces us to Viola and Cecil, an older, married couple on their way out. She is demanding and hard, while he is with a younger woman with three kids of her own. The children are just as wacked out. Paris can see nothing but her own success in front of her, while Charlotte resent her older sister's accomplishment. Lewis is book smart, but dumb in his choices concerning his life. Janelle is the baby of the family, and unfortunately, conducts her life as such. Not a wise thing to do while raising a pre-teen. The drama level is played to the hilt and the tensions run fast and furious, yet they sincerely care and love each other. Even if you can't relate to the situations they experience, there is still a factor there that you know someone that conducts themselves the same way these characters do! Sounds like the mark of a great book to me. Bravo, Terry!
Rating: Summary: Terry McMillan is the BEST! Review: I absolutely LOVED this book! I cried and laughed my way through the whole novel. The characters are so realistic and believable that I didn't want to book to come to an end. It deserves 10 stars!
Rating: Summary: This is the Terry that wrote Mama and Dissappearing Acts Review: A Day Late and A Dollar Short is reminiscent of Mama and Dissappearing Acts. Both of those books were stories told with lots of love, compassion, empathy, and honesty. Terry has infused these same qualities in this book, and I for one am glad to see that she is finding herself again. 'Stella' was a narcissistic tribute to herself that wasn't the greatest read for me. Waiting to Exhale was fun but didn't nearly approach the high quality of storytelling that Terry is so capable of. I was dissappointed with the mostly ineffectual male characters in this book, and it was a culture shock for me (yes, I am African American) when I opened the book to the mother, Viola, speaking with such poor grammar, and cursing too, but I quickly adjusted. I like the messages about family and that we all have problems, but they don't have to have their way with us. Terry also understands that although we spend a great deal of our young adult lives trying to run away from our families, that most of us begin the journey back to them at just around the same age as Paris, Janelle, Charlotte, and Lewis. I feel sorry for the families that don't have a Viola to help them find the way home.
Rating: Summary: A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT Review: This book is wonderful. I think it is the best one Ms McMillian has written yet. The characters are so real and I can see many families going through the same thing. I love the book, one miunte I was laughing out loud, the next I was crying my eyes out. Although the story holds your interest with the interaction of characters the ending blows you away. I have already pasted this book on to several friends and we all believe this is just another movie waiting to come to life. My hat is off to you Ms McMillian.
