Rating: Summary: THE BEST YET Review: Of all of Terry McMillan's books, A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT is by far the best one yet. She captures the essence of a family disintegrating and reuniting. This book is about the separate and united lives of the Price family, the separated, middle-aged parents and their four very different, adult children. By the author's letting each member speak in the first-person voice, in alternating chapters, it was easy for the reader to visualize and understand the each family member's personal reasoning for their own circumstannce. Each sibling's problems, squabbles, heartaches, and triumphs are discussed in detail. It was also easy to either identify with a character or recognize someone who did. This is a well-written, emotional and realistic story about the trials and joys of one slightly disorganzed family. The Family Tree inside the cover was a real plus. It helped to place and follow who belonged to whom.
Rating: Summary: high drama in just a few months of one family's life Review: This is a very good, entertaining novel. Its 400 pages take the reader through less than a year in the life of one family of two parents and four adult children. Much happens to the family, and to my mind that was the one drawback of the book. Too much happens in too short a space of time. As such the book takes on an almost mythical aspect as tragedy after tragedy is heaped upon the lead characters. Perhaps Terry McMillan was using the short timespan as a device, and if so I would be grateful to understand why. That being the only drawback for me, what of the positive side. The novel tackles some very difficult issues. The very downhome nature of the central character Viola, brings humour to some of these issues whilst not taking away any of their power. The other characters are all well-drawn, through their struggles. These characters, and some of the smaller characters - I particularly liked Brenda - easily engage the reader, on a journey to find out how these characters situations will go. I personally prefer Waiting To Exhale, but this is another fine novel from Terry McMillan.
Rating: Summary: The Real Terry is Finally Back! Review: I started this book on Sunday evening and couldn't put it down. I finished it in 3 days. The characters were well-developed and realistic. I shed a tear at the ending and I didn't want the book to end. Again, this was an excellent book and I would highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: The Best By Far! Review: This novel was McMillan's best work yet. This truly was a page turner, and once started you can't help but finish it. I felt like the author had some insight into my extended family. Vy is a true matriarch, Charlotte definitely needs counseling, Janelle's been looking in all the wrong places to fulfill her needs, Lewis is a gentle yet troubled spirit, Paris is the bolt that holds everything together and Cecil is a man whom Vy loved with a fervor. I don't believe there are adequate words in the English language to express how I truly felt about this book. Again, this was by far the best work Terry McMillan has done. This is a must read for all families.
Rating: Summary: Amazing--Couldn't put it down! Review: A deep, thought provoking, tear jerker, that I just couldn't put down. It really made me think of my family and how distant we are and made me want to do something about it. Terry you have really outdone yourself with this one. I hope the next one is as good as this one. I've read Mama, Waiting to Exhale and now A Day Late and A Dollar Short and you have not disappointed me yet. You get much love from me sistah....keep them coming!
Rating: Summary: Well worth the wait. Review: A Day Late and a Dollar Short is by far the best work by Terry McMillan in my opinion. Terry is like fine wine..she gets better with time. Truly a master piece of work. Once I started reading (ADLAADS) I couldn't put the book down. The characters were so real. At first I was wondering about all the characters but soon everything came together and I couldn't close the book. The family tree was very helpful. Everyone that read this novel should be able to relate with the day to day drama of the Price family. Have you ever read a book and hated for it to end? That is how I felt when I closed the last page of (ADLAADS). I was like no...I want more. This is one that will have you laughing, crying, shacking your head and thinking about your own family. Terry, please don't make us wait too long for your next release. God's Blessings. Tanya
Rating: Summary: Terry is right on the money with this book! Review: I loved this book! It started off slow, but by the end I was laughing and crying right along with the characters in the book. To get the most out of this book, don't put it down! This book is best read when you have a whole day to just sit back and relax, but believe me if you can find the time, you will not even want to put it down. The characters are developed wonderfully and will give you a greater appreciation for the ones you love.
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK I'VE READ ALL YEAR !!!! Review: I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT AND FINISHED READING THIS BOOK ABOUT FIVE A.M. THIS MORNING. IN BETWEEN CHAPTERS MY DAUGHTER IN LAW WERE CALLING EACH OTHER WITH OUR OPINIONS AND QUESTIONS AS TO WHAT MAY HAPPEN NEXT,ETC. TERRY MCMILLAN OUTDID HER SELF THIS TIME.I SAW LOTS OF FAMILY MEMBERS IN THIS BOOK AND A LITTLE BIT OF MYSELF. THE BOOK WAS AN EASY READ AND I CANT WAIT TO DISCUSS IT AT MY BOOK CLUB MEETING. IT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD AND TALK TO AN EMPTY ROOM.I WILL REMEMBER THE CHARACTERS NAMES AND WHO THEY WERE. THE ENDING MADE ME CRY WHILE I WAS READING AND WAS SOMETHING LIKE WHAT MY OWN MOTHER DID ONLY SHE WROTE HER LETTER ABOUT 20 YEARS BEFORE SHE DIED.I DON'T KNOW ANY ONE SO FAR WHO HAS NOT LIKED THIS BOOK
Rating: Summary: Well worth the wait!! Review: Well.... I saw my mother, my brother and my niece. I have to admit that I also saw a myself in this book. I never thought so much about birth order and the real reasons why relatives act they way that they do until I read this book. It will make you cry, laugh, scream and yell all at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Good Book! Review: I liked this book, it's the first I've read by Terry McMillan. The characters were well developed, but at times I had trouble figuring out which character each chapter was covering. One question, Janelle was pregnant with George's baby, but McMillan never tells us if she gives birth or not at the end of the book. Very strange!
