Rating: Summary: One of Terry's Good Books Review: I could not wait until Terry brought out another book. When I read the first page I was automatically interested in the book. Viola(mom) told it like was suppose to be told. Viola's children and her husband were just as real as she was in this book. From the first page you are hooked into the family problems and also you see where these characters stand. I really believe that the book should have ended another way but whose to say how to write another person's book. If you want something real that you can relate to in everyday life you can pick this book up and find out the everyday problems that these characters have just like real people.
Rating: Summary: Ridiculous! Review: This book is basically the plots of every Oprah Bookclub Book ever written and shoved into one book. I was glad when it was over!
Rating: Summary: A New Terry McMillan Fan For Life Review: A Day Late and A Dollar Short was my first McMillan read, and I must say that I was not disappointed! I could not put this book down. I even stayed up until 6 am to read the conclusion, which moved me to tears. I consider myself an avid reader, but I have NEVER cried while reading a book in my life. McMillan created characters who I really began to care about or even loathe. Each character was strongly developed. Definitely the best book I have read in a long time. I will be reading Ms. McMillan's previous novels now. Hopefully they are as good, or even better than this one.
Rating: Summary: Mama Revisited Review: Although Terry McMillan wrote with her usual punchy, vibrant dialogue, and depicted her characters in a way that a reader could easily visualize them, I truly did not see a lot difference between this book and her first book, MAMA. For the most part, she repackaged Mildred, Freda and the gang into a more contemporary storyline, and judging from most reviews, got away with it with very little complaint from her fans. There is absolutely nothing wrong with revisiting old topics, and in some cases, revisiting old storylines (of course it would be nice if the writer would just say that rather than give the old characters new names), but for someone who writes at the level that Terry McMillan writes, I, for one, expected a whole lot more than a Danielle Steele/John Grisham type formulaic story in this much anticipated book.
Rating: Summary: IS THIS REALLY MY FAMILY? Review: From the first page, I kept having to ask myself is this fiction or did Terry McMillan somehow watch the interactions of many of my family members for years. The characters are so well developed they really seem like people that you know (all too well at times). The dialogue is very real, so real that at times I can finish a character's sentence before I finish reading the lines. And the language, though familiar, is by no means cliche. The book at times makes you laugh until you cry, and then cry until you laugh at yourself for crying so hard about fictitional characters. Even more, the book makes you reflect on the past, pray for the present and hope for the future. It reads like a movie, and it's one that you'll want to curl up with and savor again and again and again.
Rating: Summary: A Warm Read Review: This book was one that I feel everyone could identify with. This family reminded me of alot of people that I knew. McMillan took real life issues that face most people and somehow made them funny. I laughed, cried, and felt these characters. This book reminded me so much of Soul Food. It dealt with family and the many issue we face that sometimes make us stumble and fall. As in every family, Viola was the glue that held the dysfunction together and at times caused the dysfunction. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There are very few authors that can make me feel the characters to the point of tears. This author was able to achieve this. Thank you for helping so many of us see ourselves within our families. Hopefully, someone will learn from the mistakes of these characters and mirror their sucesses.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: This book was so good to me that I couldn't put it down. I actually read it in one day! It was so much like the everyday African American family. I even saw my family in this story. It was comforting, enjoyable, and heart touching. Terry has done it again!
Rating: Summary: The Truth Review: This book was to true. I've never laughed and cried so much. The way the book is written with each character telling their side of the story, made me care for each of them. I felt like I was apart of the family. That Viola reminds me so much of my mom it's not funny. I hope this book is turned into a movie, also. Terry McMillan outdone herself this time.

Rating: Summary: One of Terry McMillian's Best Novels Yet Review: My Fiancee and I read this book together on a bus trip and we couldn't put it down. We laughed so hardand there were times when I also cried. I think this book will really touch each person in a different way. There is someone in here for everyone to identify with. The character's were so real. It even reminded us of some people in our own families. It was a real page turner and a great book. I highly recommend it.
