Rating: Summary: Very Satisfying Read Review: The strength of Terry McMillan's writing is the strong characterization. At her best, (Mama, Disapearing Acts) her characters are just like folks we know - our mamas, our girl friends, our men. Their actions and lives ring true to us and when they talk, they often crack us up. We become vested in what happens to them. We root for them because they want what we want. And if they get it, so can we. Though Exhale and Stella were both wildly successful, to me they were less satisfying than the either of the earlier two works. Stella, certainly had it moments but left me with the feeling Terry had hardly worked up a sweat, ah writing the book that is. And then there was A Day Late and a Dollar Short. This is a wonderful exploration of familial relationships with some of her strongest writing yet. There were passages that I just had to stop and go back and reread. Poignant and heartwarming, Day Late is Terry McMillan back at the top of her game. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: A job well done! Review: This was Terry Mcmillans best work yet! I laughed, I cried and then laughed some more! It was very refreshing to know everyone has a little dysfunction! The storyline was great, the character development flowed as did the plot. Well Done!
Rating: Summary: One Sensational Novel...A Great Summer Read.... Review: A Day Late and A Dollar Short was right on time because I had gone through half of the summer without the perfect summer read. The characters were believable and the situations were very real. I was laughing one minute and sympatizing the next. This is truly a work of art and I am so proud of Terry for staying strong. Do me on favor, don't be a day late and a dollar short on this one because this is one novel that everyone will be talking about!!!
Rating: Summary: I Absolutely Love this Book Review: I have to be honest I Wasn't a Terry Mcmilian fan in the past. But after this book. I will be for now on. This is the most honest portrayal I had read in a long time. This should be made into a movie. I couldn't wait to finish it was so good. The letters Viola wrote to her family moves me to do the same. letters made me cry. Good job Terry looking to reading more.
Rating: Summary: Rock on Terry!! Review: It was so great!! It made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. It reminds me a lot of the book, Caught Up, except Terry is not as straight forward with her approach towards relationships.
Rating: Summary: Honestly Terry, I didn't think you could do it... Review: ...but 'cha did. You topped yourself gurl! It took me the longest durn time to get to page 2. There was always something getting in my way. My suggestion to everyone is to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE turn that page. You will go on a journey through an African American family that will astound and envelope you at the same time. You'll see your sister, your cousin, your mama, yourself, a whole lot of somebodies that you know. I know you didn't think that you had the only brother or sister like that, hrmph! It's what you call 'true dat' if you know what I mean. So go on, open up a slice of life that you knew existed all along. 'Ain't nuthin to be shamed of.'
Rating: Summary: You Go Terry!! Review: I must say I loved this book. I simply could not wait to find out the ending. I haven't done this in a long time, but I almost went to the back of the book to see what happens...I started reading this book on Sunday and was angry that I had to put it down to answer the phone, and any other small task to take my attention away from it for even a second. That's how great this book is. Of course, I called my Mama and my sister to tell them I found my other sister in the book (Charlotte). I was sure that Terry had been to dinner at my house because Charlotte and Lewis are definitely in my family!! I just loved the letters to the kids at the end, because that is exactly something I would do. I am very sentimental and I like making others feel special. The ending was very much to my liking. If I was a writer, I would have done it the same way. I can't say enough great things about this book. Terry thanks so much for taking me back home!
Rating: Summary: O. K. Review: The story was ok, a little long and a version of the movie "Soul Food" in writing with some different events. The story was to long and after reading it for a while, I sort of wanted to hurry up and finish it. Very emotional, to long, overall it was okay.
Rating: Summary: Good and Funny Book Review: I have ready many of Terry's books. This book is good and funny. The characters seem so real, I guess because almost every one has one of her characters in their family. A book to be read.
Rating: Summary: Terry What Happened Review: I didn't actually buy this book, my sister loaned me her copy. I don't often question my sister's sanity but this is one of those times I considered having the girl drug tested. This book is not Terry McMillan. I think an alien life form invaded her body and wrote this for her. It was awful. The first chapter is as far as I got. The mother in this story spent far too much time bitching about her useless children. After reading complaint after complaint I was ready to kill the mother ,the kids ,Terry ,and my sister. Terry can write better than this. I have her other books and was deeply disappointed by this one. Terry that young man must be wearing you out because you failed with this book. Don't buy it, it's not worth the money or time. Buy her other books you'll enjoy them more.
