Rating: Summary: Was that my family? Review: Terry must have sat down at a family reunion and heard some of our old stories because she went home and wrote about us. The story was hilarious, touching, and real. If you don't think it reminds yourself of your own family....read it again because it will hit home.
Rating: Summary: Brought tears to my eyes...I miss Viola Review: Now, Terri...I loved that book. I liked the way Terri brought each character in and depicted their characters and pieced everyone in their perspective parts and roles. I read "How Stella Got her Groove Back," and I have to admit...I really didn't care for the writing style used at the beginning it was like a continuous run-on sentence that ended up being a paragraph. I am no English expert, but I had to reread a few parts to figure out where the book was going. But I don't like one bad apple ruin the bunch. I loved this book and I found myself feeling emotionally involved throughout my readings. I felt the characters pains, struggles, and at the end when V left...I actually cried reading the passage about here in the hospital. I really get into the books I read and being able to relate to the characters ...keeps my interest alive. I felt that this would be worth making a movie on. I would be there on opening night. I loved "Mama" too...and I told some friends of mine early on that "Disappearing Acts" would make a good movie. I am glad that Wesley played Franklin. I wanted to see what Franklin was going to look like too. Wesley is a fine specimen of a man and though not the most handsome man on earth... his personality and style makes him a true knock out. He has it going on and earns an A in my book. So to all you true readers and those that love to read Terri's books...I can assure you that "A Day Late and a Dollar Short" will leave you as I were saying, "Now that was better than going to see a movie." Each night I read, was like I was watching the continued portions of some long movie that was being showed in parts. Keep up the excellent writing Terri...I will always read your books. I didn't do spell check nor did I do grammar check...so don't hold it against me. Just started writing and sent it forward. Satisfied reader. Monica Mosley
Rating: Summary: WE ALL CAN RELATE Review: In some ways I felt like I could really relate to this book. I found myself being one of the characters. This book is the best yet!!!
Rating: Summary: Way To Go Terry McMillan!! Review: I recently finished reading A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT by Terry McMillan, and I have to say, it was one of the few books I have ever read that I actually hated to see end. The characters in this book are so lovable, understandable, and human - you actually find yourself caring deeply about what happens to all of them. I loved how when reading this book, it was like you were inside each character's mind, hearing their private innermost thoughts expressed the way people really "think" them - so honest, candid, and REAL! This book moved me to laugh out loud, feel happy, feel sad, feel hope, feel a lot of things. It is not just a story of family, but a story of human beings, and how we could all use a little more understanding and empathy from one another. This book is a must-read, one you will enjoy reading and want to pass onto your family and friends. I can only hope that Ms. McMillan comes out with a sequel to this story. I would love to see what the future holds for the characters left in A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT. Kudos to the author AND publisher for getting this story out into the world!
Rating: Summary: It could have been worse... Review: I enjoyed reading this book! There were a lot of parts that had me screaming and laughing at the same time. I really wish Ms. Terry would let go of the ghetto tragedies though. This was one messed up family tree. I mean the whole tree had serious issues! It one of those that would make you say "damn cut that one down and start over" but all in all a very good book.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Review: This book is most likely her best. I have read all of them so far. Even the anthologies. Great writer, great book.. Go get it now.
Rating: Summary: I DON'T HAVE ENUF THUMBS TO PUT UP FOR THIS BOOK!!! Review: This book was breathtaking!!! I cried when the mother died. I felt like I was part of this book. I was pleased to read how things worked out at the end. This book is truly "A MUST READ"!!! Keep up the good work Terry McMillan..You and your sister Rosalyn truly have writing skills. I own every book made by you two
Rating: Summary: A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT Review: THIS BOOK WAS BOTH FAMILIAR AND SPIRITUAL AS IT WAS VERY MUCH OF WHAT FAMILIES ARE MADE OF. I REALLY ENJOYED HOW SHE MADE THE CHARACTERS COME TO LIFE TO THE POINT WHERE YOU ACTUALLY HAD A FAMILY MEMBER IN MIND AS YOU READ THE PAGES OF THOROUGH DESCRIPTIONS. THIS BOOK WAS SPIRITUAL BECAUSE SHE DESCRIBED HOW ALTHOUGH EVERYONE MAY BE FAMILY, IT DOESN'T NECESSARLY MEAN WE MUST LIKE ON ANOTHER'S PERSONALITY OR ATTITUDE'S. THIS BOOK WAS A BOOK THAT WAS VERY EASY TO READ AND VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN... SINCERE AND FUNNY. GREAT BOOK. JUST THOUGHT THE ENDING COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE DAZZLING, OTHERWISE A BOOK WORTH READING.
Rating: Summary: MCMILLIAN IMPROVES THIS TIME Review: THIS BOOK IS TWO STARS UP ON "WAITING TO EXHALE" BUT I THINK SHE CAN DO BETTER. THE YOUNGEST DGHT. DIVORCED FROM HER HUSBAND LIVING WITH A GUY WHO MOLESTS HER LITTLE GIRL AND THE ELDEST DGHT. PARIS WHO IS RICH AND SUCCESSUL AND HELPS VI OUT WITH LIVING EXPENSES. LEWIS HAS A HIGH IQ BUT CAN'T ACHIEVE ANY THING BECAUSE THE WORLD IS AGAINST HIM. BUT VI KEEPS ON PERKING ALONG DOING THE BEST SHE CAN AND TRYING TO SURVIVE EACH WORSENING ASTHMA ATTACK. BUT SHE HAS BEEN PUTTING A FEW DOLLARS AWAY AN TRYING TO PLANT SOME SEEDS OF WISDOM IN HER CHILDREN'S HEADS. ALONG COMES THE FINAL ASTHMA ATTACK THAT TAKES HER ON A TRIP BETTER THAN A CRUISE AND THE CHILDREN GATHER ALONG WITH HUBBY TO DIVIDE THE SPOILS. VI HAS LEFT THEM MONET TO ACCOMPLISH THEIR DREAMS BUT THEY HAVE TO MEET EVERY THANKSGIVING TO REMAIN A FAMILY AND THAT IS THE MORAL OF THE STORY..FAMILY IS BEST AND WORTHWHILE KEEPING TOGRTHER.
Rating: Summary: The Best Yet Review: I enjoyed this book from first to last page! Terry, you've outdone yourself! I read it in a day and a half because I simply couldn't put it down. I really couldn't. I laughed and cried but mostly laughed. I certainly saw my family and myself in this book. Anyone who has a family of any kind will relate to this family in many ways. It seems like everywhere I go I see people reading this book. Now I understand why. I saw six people reading it on the bus the week before I purchased it. After I purchased it, at least five people have asked me to let them read it. The word is definitely out on this one.Never has a book made me feel that maybe my family is human after all. Thank you for such a fabulous read. I look forward to the next one.
