Summary: Somewhat Slow
Review: I have to admit I did like this story, although it was somewhat slow for my taste. Lavinia and Tobias did have a lot of tension between them, although it wasn't a terrible amount of sexual tension in the beginning - they really just seemed to aggravate each other immensely. The dialog was quite witty, the scenes were humorous in some areas. The mystery was there, right up to the very end, you were guessing - I didn't figure out the ending until quite near the end. I think this may turn into a very enjoyable series! Definitely worth the effort to read it!

Summary: If You Really Want It
Review: If you really must have this book I would get it from a used book store. I have read all of her books and this one I bought a week ago and still haven't finished it. It is not one of her best it is even worse then The Wicked Widow. I don't think I'll be buying any more of her books.

Summary: More than slightly the lights are out
Review: I'll make this short. I agree with previous reviewers who found this book slow and dull. There is no spark between the protagonists. The repeated formula of distrust and the juvenile behavior is tedious. I had hoped Ms Krentz was going to get back on target but to find out this is first in a series is disheartening. The slightly good from all this is I have time to read and discover new authors.

Summary: A Page Turner In Slightly Shady
Review: ONCE AGAIN AMANDA QUICK has done a clever piece of work which
should excite and thrill her loyal fans.

It's comical, loaded with passion and of course romance as Lavina Lake's antique
shop in Rome has been invaded and ram sacked before her very eyes by Tobias
March, who has a sense that there are illegal practices with an underground organization
going on inside her beautiful shop right under her nose. She is flabbergasted when this is
suggested at first, and soon Tobias has both Lavina and her niece Etheline are packing
back to London in a waiting carriage with two escorts to see them safely out.

Back in London, Lavina's safety is threatened which forges a partnership between she
and Tobias, as they hunt for the blackmailer and the murderer.

Lovers of Quick will enjoy the mystery, romance, and the sizzling tension created between this
unlikely pair of Lavina and Tobias. A very simple read which will have fans flicking the pages until
the juicy end of this new publication.

Get it soon..... it's an ideal Birthday gift.

Summary: Slightly Shady is right
Review: I enjoy Amanda Quick's novel (aka Jayne Ann Krentz), but this one follows its name to the letter. I think Jayne is putting more emphasis on her contemporary romances then on her historical ones. This one left me less then thrilled.
I look forward to her next Amanda Quick Novel...hopefully it will be better.

Summary: Slightly Off Course
Review: Amanda Quick is an outstanding author, who keeps me riveted and turning the pages as fast as I can read. So, it was slightly disappointing to discover a book by her that was interesting, but that lacked the elements that make her usually a truly great writer--humor, wit, well-drawn characters and fast paced storylines. The characters here are okay, but the chemistry between them neither ignites nor develops believably. Unlike so many of her books which tell tales of the Ton, the main characters are more members of the Intellgentsia, and lack the social connections, entree and financial resources to be part of the Ton. Instead of owning fashionable things, they struggle to earn what they can off the wealthy Ton. The secondary set of characters in this novel, the niece and the brother-in-law of the main characters are well-drawn and likable. This is a book worth reading, but only after having finished all her others, which are so much better.

Summary: Great mystery!
Review: I can understand why some of the customer reviews are not good. There is much more mystery and much less romance than is usual for this author. In my opinion, howerer, the mystery elements were far superior to what they usually are in an Amanda Quick book. The supporting characters were much more interesting as well. I am looking forward to the sequel.

Summary: Sorry to say . . . .
Review: Jayne Krentz(amanda quick) is one of the authors I collect and buy brand new in hard back. I have always loved her stories, however I must agree with the poor reviews, I didn't like the characters, didn't care what happended to them, didn't finish the books. That is a first for me with this author

Summary: The plot thickens throughout
Review: Elizabeth Stone's narration of Amanda Quick's Slightly Shady adds life and excitement to the story of Lavinia, who faces a stranger in her antiques store. He's in pursuit of a killer; she is convinced he is out to destroy her. The plot thickens throughout.

Summary: A Humane, (almost) Real-life Couple
Review: After seeing it get only 2.5 stars, I feel I must defend Ms. Quick's latest novel. Oh this one isn't comparable to her ealier S,R,D series, but it is the better out of Quick's last few. After being bored to tears about Vanza, the humanity in Slightly Shady is a breath of fresh air.

I especially enjoyed Tobias's *un*distinguished background. He is not filthy rich, doesn't carry a title, doesn't tower above everybody else... he's just a man trying to make a living. I adore his character even more for that.

While the couple do squabble, they do it as matured adults, which is more than I can say for other novels. I almost threw out Julian Quinn's To Catch an Heiress! I praise Ms Quick for making Lavinia and Tobias level-headed enough, thus saving me from unnecessary annoyance about characters who are just too silly to be real.

All in all, I agree with booksforabuck from Dallas (posted Jul 30, 01) and the reader from Dallas (posted Jul 11, 01). Ms. Quick did an amazing job at maintaining a balance between romance and mystery, culminating in Slightly Shady's delightful read.
