Rating: Summary: I want the Vapors:-) Review: Tina McElroy Ansa...mmh, mmh, mmh!! I don't even know where to begin. I guess I'll start by saying I've fantasized about many men, but none as gifted as Herman. If I ever get the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Ansa, I'd shake the H-E-double hockey stick out of her hand. Girlfriend, put her foot in this. This is the story of a woman named Lena whose blessed birth marked her to be the luckiest woman in Mulberry. She has the looks, the clothes, the cars, the house, the land, the business'S (I capitalized the 'S' for a reason) With all I ran down, one would think Miss Lena had all a woman could ask for. NOT!!!!! During a busy life of selfless living for socially inept and ill-informed town's people, she meets a man that only we women can dream about. I'm talking about a palpably spiritual brother. His name is Herman. Who's B-A-D? Certainly not Micheal in comparison to Herman. If you're a woman whose ever talked about a man who was so good he could make your 'little sister' sing, or ever laid next to a man wishing you could absorb him into your body through the pores of your skin, you need to take a walk with Lena through Mulberry, via Tina McElroy Ansa. Let me say this, the book is fantastic, so take your time reading it and follow along closely. You'll find out why the title of the book is what it is and why Herman's name is so befitting. This was the romance of the Decade for me. Thank you Mrs. Ansa.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Review: The writing was gorgeous, the plot: unique! Even though it was a ghost story, I could actually believe that it was happening. The character of Lena may have not been too realistic, but then again it is a fantasy novel. The abundant descriptions were helpful--I could reproduce each scene in my mind, taste the food Lena made Herman, envision each outfit she wore and the home she lvied in. Buy it--it's a definite must-read!
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: The "Hand I Fan With"...the most well-rounded, inspirational, emotional story I've ever had the opportunity of reading. Why wasn't this book selected to Oprah's book club of the month? All I can do is wonder. Any woman given a year of well-rounded lovin' as intricately detailed as in "The Hand I Fan" could only feel complete. Can I be re-born with a veil, please? This highly emotional drama made me laugh, cry, and sing with the same inspiration and satisfaction as its lead character. If only dreams came true! Look Out America, Tina McElroy Ansa has gone off the charts with "The Hand I Fan With" the best fiction ever written!
Rating: Summary: Too Much Detail, Not Enough Conflict Review: I found this book to be a real let-down after Baby of the Family. Like Baby of the Family, this book was rich in detail and speech. However, in Hand, I kept waiting for something to happen to Lena, the main character. Sure, she summons up a ghost and has lots of sex and love. The problem is, everytime the story started to move forward and show a little conflict (a female ghost rival, an angry town that feels forgotten by Lena), the conflict is resolved far too easily. The book encourages us to stop concentrating on the material and enjoy life as Lena learned to do, but it was hard for me to identify with a woman who can stop working with no financial impact on her or her lifestyle (huge piece of land, beautiful house, nice clothes, horses, top-notch car, etc.) I think Lena's in an far easier position to drop it all than most of us and her transformation was uninspiring. I'd put this one at the bottom of the three Ansa books.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful story about self discovery ! Review: What a great way to tell us to take some time for ourselves
Rating: Summary: Don't Waste Your Money Review: This book took details to a level that was unecessary. I understand the idea of making the reader feel like they are part of the story but whew, I fell asleep about half way through the description of Lena, her car and the road she was driving on. I expected more out of Mrs. McElroy-Ansa and she fell short on this one. I should have had a clue with the way Baby of the Family ended. Unless you like long winded books that takes more than 100 pages to get to the meat of the story, spend your money on another book.
Rating: Summary: CUDOS TO YOU MS. MC ELROY! Review: Ghost and Mrs. Muir look out! This young lady has taken retreat into a dimension known only to she and "Her Man". With all takers of her magnificently sought after talents cast aside, the character journeys where no woman has gone before -- into the nither world. A place where man is man and woman is woman, be he or she dead or alive. The writer is deep, the message received and I do indeed relate. Cudos to you Ms. McElroy!
Rating: Summary: Keeps your attention;a page turner Review: I really liked this book. I felt as if I knew the life of the main character Lena. I could really identify with some of the spirtual phenomenon that she experienced in her life. Not so much the ghosts; but the heightened perception of my surroundings and the people in my life. I think that Ms Mcelroy-Ansa wrote a book about taking control of your own life and everything that goes with it. Some people achive that through therapy; some through events in their lives and some are just lucky enough to to find the real love and caring of a good mate to help them become more secure in who they are and most of all just learn to love and be happy. I normally read Anne Rice novels about ghosts and witches but I think a lot of the folklore in this book is so close to the grain and being from the rural south I've heard a lot of the stories and tales. Read it with an open mind it is very entertaing, just like listening to an old friend tell you a story.
Rating: Summary: TO APPRECIATE THIS BOOK YOU MUST LISEN TO IT. Review: THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING AND FUNNIEST BOOKS I HAVE LISEN TOO. YOU MUST LISEN TO IT TO GET THE FULL EFFECTS OF IT.
Rating: Summary: Very good book! Definitely a must read!!!! Review: I thought this book was absolutely great! This author bought the character to full circle. They way in which she wrote this book it's almost like she experienced it herself. The character, Lena is a women that I would like to mirrof myself! She had class, culture and smarts. She is self-sufficient and what I call "All women"! She was not lucky in love no, but I believe she was put on earth to help others, which she did. It was unfortunate that her man had to be a spirit. When I think of it, he had to be a spirit as no man could compare to Lena. She had so much love and material items to give that a human probably couldn't have handled it. I've read many books by numerous black authors and this one is a keeper. It is a must read!!!!
