Rating: Summary: Wonderful, interesting story as seen through a young women Review: I found this book to be suprisingly interesting. Filled with intricate facts of lifes ups and downs. The reader really can feel where the young girl and her mother are in their relationship as well as their hearts. Also very modern content, with a sixties kind of twist.
Rating: Summary: Artistry and reality come together in poetry Review: This is far and away the best book I've read this year. Fitch managed to craft a tale in which the darkness of our heroine's reality is seen in her behavior and circumstance and the mastery of her art emanates from her unique and unbelievably poetic observations. Fitch illustrates the strength and seduction of maternity by demolishing every imaginable component. Sure, it's dark...but the text bursts with rays of strength, occasional kindness and enviable creativity. It is eloquent and bitter-sweet, but best of all: it is challenging. BRAVO.
Rating: Summary: Literature at its best! One of the best books I've ever read Review: The story is great! The author writes so beautifully I can't wait to read her next book... The main character is in foster care and moving from family to family. This made for an interesting way of meeting character after character, each fascinating and rich in his or her own way. The book is tragic, yet hopeful. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter and had a hard time putting it down. I felt so close to the main character that I missed her when I was finished reading. I just can't say enough good things about White Oleander. Those who hated this book must have short attention spans and terrible concepts of good literature.
Rating: Summary: Please do not waste your time. Review: I was so excited to read this book. I had to force myself to keep reading until the end. It really stunk.
Rating: Summary: Must read Review: I was disappointed in this book in the beginning, because I was interested in learning more of the mother and what happened, but as I got into it, I was glad I continued reading it. Following Astrid through her unbelievable childhood was riveting - made me pass this book onto my teenaged daughter. I'm glad I didn't put it down too early.
Rating: Summary: The wordyness gets in the way of the point of the book Review: I thought that the book was too descriptive, and flowery. I found that all of the excess words got in the way of the point of the book and what the author was really trying to say. I just couldn't get into it.
Rating: Summary: Brutally depressing Review: Yet another Oprah-endorsed book about a victimized young girl (think Ellen Foster, She's Come Undone, Where the Heart Is, etc.) This one, however, is worse because the heroine consistently makes bad choices throughout the story. That made it very hard to identify with her.Ultimately, though, the thing that killed this book for me is the fact that it is relentlessly depressing. I kid you not, this book actually sapped positive energy from my life when I read it. Of course, I've recovered. But with all the horror and meaninglessness that already exists in this world, why supplement it in fiction? The writing style is very good, very poetic - but the message is the opposite of uplifting. I was surprised that Oprah touted it so highly, usually she has very positive messages on her show. In the end, it probably ranks among the top five books (and/or movies) that I wish I could go back and not read.
Rating: Summary: 1 star only because she finished it. Review: you asked we not be profane or obscene even tho. the book was. Miss winfrey said it was the best bookshe ever read. I should have sent her a sympathy card. she surely didn.t mean it. I gave my copy to the local library. I didn,t want in my collectionbe careful who reads it if you have it.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful well written bittersweet novel Review: I thought this book was extradionary. I lost my mom at a young, tender and vunerable age, and could totally relate to Astrid and her connections and longings for her mother. The book was a page turner, and each line was as if you were reading poetry. Thank you for such a good read, and more so for stirring up nostalgic memories of the eternal mother daughter bond. It never leaves you.
Rating: Summary: The Most Depressing Book I have ever read. Review: The book was extremely well written but left me very upset
