Rating: Summary: The Client Review: Seems thrown together by Grisham to capitalize on the popularity of his earlier books, to which I would asign an average of 4.5 stars. I will continue to try his books but with lowered expectations.
Rating: Summary: Full of Suspense Review: There is plenty of suspense in this book, and it is very entertaining, one of my favorite Grisham novels. The protagonist, Mark Sway, is 11 and his life has been anything but easy. One day, he goes out into the woods near his house and witnesses the suicide of the lawyer of a man wanted for the murder of a US Senator, and the man tells him the location of the body. Suddenly Mark is surrounded by snakes: the mob who want him quiet, and the prosecutors who want him to talk. His only ally is Reggie Love, a lawyer in her fifties who will fight for Mark and his family until the end. This is an electrifying reading experience and I read it in three days. Even if you do not like Grisham I think you should read this book.
Rating: Summary: I Shouldn't Have Done That !! Review: I shouldn't have done that...I started reading The Client right after I'd finished A Time to Kill and that was my mistake. A Time to Kill was so full of dramatic events, rollercoaster thrills and non-stop action that it seemed that there are simply too few things happening in The Client. Sure, it's greatly written, it's very funny and even emotional but sometimes you feel that Grisham got too carried away in some parts of the book and the ending is somewhat rushed. Otherwise, it's superb, especially the style. Everything is so natural that you think it couldn't be written better than that. Even the first meeting between Mark and Reggie is set up in such a way that it made me think Grisham is a genius. If you want a book from a master of the genre, that's the stuff you need!
Rating: Summary: just another writing Review: I found this book outstanding! It was wonderfully written and very precise. Some say that Mark Sway was too far fetched and too smart for his age, but i beg to differ. T.v. was mentioned many times when he was questioned and he said that he loved the shows that envolved the law. Those shows have very helpful information and can get a good prespctive on some lawyers. He is very witty and knows when to act smart, dim - witted and any other things that you can act. I know many people like this. Myself included. I probally wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut at some points but some can. I know all this about younger children because i am one. I am only in the age range of 12 - 14 but i love his books, because they are so evolved and can make you belive that what is in that story is happening, or has happened. Keep on reading, Sammy D.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as The Partner Review: This book is well written, as are all of Grisham's works. But I for one found it a bit of a stretch because I don't believe any 11 year-old could be as perceptive, clever and just plain worldly-smart as Mark. He not only out-wits a suicidal lawyer, Judges, U.S. Attorneys, police and mobsters, but also out-thinks his smart counselor Reggie Love, in a certain crucial situation. Being an attorney, I enjoyed the portrayals of the flamboyant, slick and/or pompous headline-seeking lawyers, but also thought that Reggie Love sounded a bit to good to be true. She's 52, out of law school only 4 years following a nervous breakdown due to a divorce and practices solely in Juvenile Court handling child abuse cases. Yet she sandbags experienced FBI agents, is not in the least intimidated by the combined power and resources of the FBI and two U.S. Attorneys' offices, and protects the kid at a level and in a manner consistent with 35 years of criminal law experience in NYC. I also did not too credible the portrayal of experienced FBI agents as totally lacking in spine or spunk when faced with the indomitably aggressive Reggie, tucking their tails and withering before her threats regarding their not unreasonable attempts to get crucial information out of her Client. Not only that, somewhere along the short way, she picked up enough employment/discrimination law experience to completely terrorize (legally) an obnoxious sweatshop employer, in what admittedly is a great scene that I enjoyed immensely. No question, this is super-woman lawyer (Kathleen Turner? or better, Bette Midler), except when she finds herself totally under the mind-control of super-prodigy, Mark. Maybe Grisham could write a book sometime (if he already hasn't) portraying law enforcement as a bit more competent and maybe even as clever as those in opposition (we must believe that there are some out there). Notwithstanding the above comments, this is a pretty good read, esp. in Judge Harry's courtroom scenes, and in the portrayals of the newspaper writer and the ambulance chaser.
Rating: Summary: A very Good Book Review: This is a very good book that will keep your attention. If your a fan or Drama Law Mysteries then this has to be added to your list of books.
Rating: Summary: Still Good Review: I have read two novels of John Grisham: The Client, and Pelican Brief, but I find that The Client is more complete and intensely interesting throughout the story. One of the reasons I like this novel is the realism. Mark Sway is an eleven-year old, who had to live in a trailer. His mom is out working all day, and he was left with his little brother Ricky. The prologue portrays Mark and Ricky¡¯s life well. It shows what they do, what their lives look like, and how they act against the society. I also found that his style of writing is interesting. It makes the reader comfortable but you are able to catch all of important facts as you go. Pretty much every aspect of this novel entertained me, except for the characters. John intended to give Mark as the main character, but Reggie, his lawyer is the one who carries out and solves most of the conflicts. Another displeasure about this novel is that I had to read it twice for a complete understanding. This story takes place in several locations at the same time so it is quite confusing in the middle. However I would like to recommend The Client to everyone, especially the ones who want to be a lawyer. This novel shows how lawyers run, and what problems they face in the real world
Rating: Summary: A great introduction to Grisham... Review: This was the third Grisham I had read. Up to that point I had read mostly science fiction and fantasy all my life, so I didn't have a lot of experience with the genre of popular suspense. When I read it, I thought it was the best book I'd ever read, but in hindsight I have found many more since that are much better. That sort of sums this one up. If you read a lot of these types of books, it might seem mediocre, but if you're looking for something new, check it out.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Review: I have just finished reading one of your brilliant novels, The Client. The plot of the novel was very interesting and engaging. I really enjoyed the suspense and the thrill throughout the novel, but the story line could've been more realistic and more better. You have shown a great perspective of life. By reading this novel, I realized that as we grow older we will deal with dangers and criticisms from others, at least once in our lives. You have portrayed an important fact quite clearly and nicely. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. However, the plot of the novel seemed very unrealistic. For example, Mark is so young and helpless because he's 11 years old. We do see many 11-year-old boys getting around by themselves. It's pretty obvious that they are too young to get a lawyer. I found it very annoying. Also, The Client didn't have any twist to the story. It was really straight foward and in your face. I like a novel that has some mysterious and exciting climaxes or surprising. This novel had neither surprises nor mysteriousness, which made it quite boring and tedious to read. I was expecting more violence and anxiety to the story, but there weren't much of it. In addition, the ending was very broad too. In conclusion, I will give it another try andread on other novel of yours because I hear many people love reading your novels. I may have offended you a little, but I'm just discussing about The Client and how it could've been written better.
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: This is my favorite book ever. It's about a boy who sees a man commit suicide. This man happens to be a lawyer for the most famous case ever. A U.S. senator was killed and the body was never found. The lawyers client happened to be the person under trial for murdering this senator. He is also part of the mafia down in New Orleans. Before this lawyer kills himself he tells the boy where the body is. The boy (named Mark) then hires a lawyer to fend off the FBI from asking him questions which could end up in the mafia finding him and his family, yet he needs people to fend off the mafia who is trying to keep him from telling. This may sound like a technical book but it is much more of an action story. This is a wonderful book. I suggest you read it.
