Summary: What a book!!!!!
Review: I read this book after my brother reccommended it to me a year ago. I loved it. Let me say that again. I loved it. It has a great storyline, real characters (if that can be said in a fantasy book) , and besides, who can argue with someone named Fflewdur Fflam?

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: So far, probably the best book I have read in my life!
Review: An evil cauldron, three strange old witches and a treacherous prince who rediscovers himself give this story it's wonderful flavor. Surprising plot turns also aid this story in the winning of it's reward which it deserved so much. This book is really excellent. They should be saying "Read it and live forever."

Summary: AN ANCIENT IRON MENACE STALKS PRYDAIN!
Review: The Companions, as the author frequently calls them, are summoned by Prince Gwydion and the venerable wizard, Dallben, to undertake a perilous quest: to march into the stronghold of the evil Lord of Annuvin, to remove and destroy the black cauldron of heavy iron, which Arawn uses to spawn a vicious breed of Middle World Undead. We are pleased to meet again our old friends from THE BOOK OF THREE: Taran, the Assistant Pig Keeper, who longs to be considered a man, Princess Eilonwy with her ready tongue, the story-stretching bard with his fickle harp, and other faithful followers. Yet this book, #2 in a series of 5 Prydain Chronicles, retains its integrity when read alone.

Alas, pride and treachery are rampant in the land bordering Annuvin, whence the dark lord of evil reigns and schemes. Our hot-tempered hero must use both his wits and his heart his to gradually acquire wisdom in this difficult and dangerous odyssey. The small company of adventurers are eager to prove their valor and gain honor, yet they experience the inevitable personality conflicts. How will the companions ward off attacks by The Hunstmen and the foul Cauldron-born who do Arawn's bidding? And who can defeat the black beast that travels on Ellidyr's tattered shoulders?

Yet there is much more to this book than a mere succession of adventures, traps and twists of fate. Many serious themes bubble up between the mayhem that Alexander has set in motion. One reminded me of a later book, THE GIVER: "Give us--the nicest summer day you can remember!" Ah, but is it easy to part with something intangible like a dream or a memory which has become a part of onesself? And this black Crochan, as it is called, emanates evil and possessiveness towards those who think they own it--reminiscent of the ring in THE HOBBIT. Evil can completely dominate one's neutral or natural personality. Just how much will Taran sacrifice or allow his friends to sacrifice for him, in order to obtain and destroy the Black Cauldron?

Summary: It was great!
Review: I loved THE BLACK CAULDRON! The characters were really cleverly designed. They seemed so real! Unlike some book characters, they made mistakes, just like real people. The book was well paced and had an excellent action content. I think that THE BLACK CAULDRON would be an excellent Newberry Award winner.

Summary: A terrific fantasy adventure for all ages
Review: I discovered Lloyd Alexander quite by accident while browsing through a shelf of books. From the moment I picked this book up I could not put it down. Taran is a wonderful character whose high hopes for fame and glory any reader can understand to some extent. I love Princess Eilonwy and how she was every bit as independent as any man. All of Mr. Alexander's stories that I have read have strong female characters, but Eilonwy is my favorite. Gurgi can always make me laugh and I love the way he talks ("crunchings and munchings") The story of the Black Cauldron is my favorite of all the Chronicles of Prydain.

Summary: A great book!
Review:
Of all the series Lloyd has written on Prydain, this has to be the best one!

Taran, along with Lord Gwydion and his gathered band, tries to destroy the Black Cauldron for good. Taran, Ffewwdur Fflam, Gurgi, and Princess Eilonwy venture to take the cauldron themselves. It is a good book, with a good plot.

Summary: Outstanding! Exceptional! A Treasure Among Fantasy for kids!
Review: The Minute I Stepped Foot into Alexanders Imaginary world of prydain, I was entranced by the quaint little world he had created. Immediately I fell into complete understanding with the charecters. Taran who longs for Fame and Glory, but who in time learns the true meaning of a hero, Gurgi, who like a puppy wants only to please, and Fflewwdur Fflam whose tongue is constantly running away with him. Even at age 16 I find myself picking up the book and rereading it. Great job for Alexander
