Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Just for kids? NOT! Review: This is a fun book to read, though it sometimes may seem a bit dark and foreboding. Adults as well as children can learn deep values from the tale that Alexander spins around the Black Cauldron. The willingness for self-sacrifice for a greater goal that it portrays should be an inspiration to all who read it. But it also reminds us of pride's downfall. I personally love what is said about Adaon's Brooch -- how if you bring love, wisdom, and truth together you will be a person that will have a great impact on those around you, even if you don't do anything exceptionally great. Enjoy the book, oh, and by the way, if you read it, don't watch the Disney cartoon. It kind of mangles the story.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great Book! Review: This book was an amazing one. The Black Couldron kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it. The consequence of Fflewder's lieing was probably the most humorous, and Ellidyr's ironic heroism was amazing. Twist and turns were abound in this book, and I loved it. A must read!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A book of creative excellence for young or old readers Review: The Black Cauldron is a must-read from a five-part series that should be read by anyone who likes to read good stories. It is as simple as that. It's the second book in the series, as you continue with the main character's(Taran) journey through Prydain, and his quest to become a noble warrior. It combines all the elements needed; drama, humor, excitement, romance, and creativity, to make it an enjoyable book for everyone.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This book has been a beloved companion for 27 years. Review: I've been delighted to find from reading the reviews of other readers, both old and young, that THE BLACK CAULDRON is as popular with most of them as it has been with me--for the last 27 years. At 39 years old, I may be one of your older reviewers, and I still read this book. It was the first of the series I encountered (I of course gobbled up all the rest in swift succession)and it remains my favorite. Alexander's characters have been constant inner companions for all this time, and I am increasingly aware (as someone who is now trying to become a late-blooming mom)how wise this book is as well as how sheerly and utterly fun it is, and what a wonderful set of messages it gives to both children and adults. A real must-read for imaginative kids . . . and the kind of book you can carry with you forever. One of Alexander's great gifts as a children's writer is that he gives his readers characters who are recognizable, realistic protagonists as well as portraying others who are role models. As an eleven-year old, I was entranced by Adaon, son of the chief bard, who is a very heroic but also human figure, and I have lived long enough now to appreciate the truth of what he teaches Taran about the need to love the beauty of the world. Interestingly, the kind of autumnal wisdom of the book (it's set in autumn, and it has a lot of sadness and struggle in it) is particularly well-suited for the midlife crowd, if any of you older Prydain fans want to pick it up again. My life has been very difficult during the past decade or so, and having this book's wisdom and beauty remain with me has helped a lot, as has its marvelous humor.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Even better than The Book of Three!!! Review: Lloyd Alexander does it again! He's at the top of his storytelling form here with new characters that you'll always remember, and plenty more action, adventure, and humor. In my opinion, this book was worthy of the Newberry Award, no questions asked! If you read The Book of Three, read this one; you're gonna' like it better than the prequel!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Certainly one of the best books available for teenagers Review: I have read this book five or six times over the past 25 years. As a pre-teen I identified strongly with Taran and his need for recognition (what boy doesn't?). As I got older I identified with Ellidyr, Gwydion and even Fflewdur in their struggles with themselves and their enemies. While this story stands alone, I strongly recommend that readers (especially young ones) read the five books in order so that they can see the development of Taran from teenager to young man.
