Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have ever read. Review: Tom Peters has finally surpassed himself. This is simply the best managment book I have read, seen or experienced. Yes, experienced. You can't just read it, you are drawn into it. The ideas from this book are changing our organization. But beware, I only give this book to people I like. I'm afraid to give it to competitors because they may put these principles in practice faster than I can! By the way, the book is even better the second time around. Thanks Tom for a work of art.
Rating: Summary: OVERCOME YOUR "STALLED" THINKING ABOUT INNOVATION Review: Tom Peters points out (as he has done so many times before) that most of us are focusing on doing Yesterday a little better, instead of creating a much better Tomorrow. The themes of this book will seem familar at first, until you see how Peters turns them on their heads in highly innovative ways. This is like having all of your ideas shaken up like a James Bond martini. After you finish with the excitement (he captures his seminar technique in book form, rather than writing a traditional book), you will be ready for THE 2,000 PERCENT SOLUTION which has an eight-step process for innovation that gives you a system for implementing what Peters talks about. I especially liked the many quotes from a variety of successful and unsuccessful executives, and the many humorous pictures -- they really help to bring home the message. Have fun reading this book, and then have even more fun living it. Peters even encourages you to be messy (compulsive types beware!). Get this book right away and keep rereading it until you change what you are doing to focus on innovation rather than stewardship of the past.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book On Thinking & Approaching Business DIFFERENTLY! Review: Tom Peters, in his classic fashion, presents a very interesting outlook towards business. He has the ability to makes things stand out in a different perspective and turn conventional thinking on its head. In this book, one does get a deja vu from his earlier book "Crazy Times...", but even then new ideas are presented in a forceful mode. Some new ideas like "Think Resume!" and "Current Project List" are very powerful in today's context. I strongly recommend this book for everyone to open up new vistas of thinking and new ways to look at the happenings around us.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic ! Review: Well done Tom on such a mind-refreshing book. I truly agree with a lot of your concepts, eg: you can't live without an eraser. That is absolutely true. Many people in this world are afraid of making mistakes - that's why they are not innovative. And perhaps our school system has generated that in people's minds. Thank you very much for such a great book.
Rating: Summary: No doubt why Tom Peters is popular Review: While his examples may change with time, Tom clearly is enthusiastic about what is going on in the world, and has radical ideas how to respond. Be radical. Innovate. This book is based on his seminars and is very slide specific. However, I listened to the audio tape, and found the reading of the slides message by a different voice, allowed the "picture" to become clear in my mind. This is still no substitute for one of his live programs, but great for a refresher.
Rating: Summary: A Frustrating Read Review: While I am a fan of Tom Peters I found this book to be very frustrating and even annoying to read. It appears to be a collection of presentation materials slapped together to try to create a book. While it might be a good reference to use at one of the seminars it does not stand well on it's own. There is little to tie the buzz words, quotes, and ideas together. I find reading "BIG IDEA!" on every page to be more and more annoying as I read on. The book does seem to get better as you go on, particularly the second half. Maybe by then you get accustomed to the style. Still probably better as a reference or seminar guide than just reading material.
Rating: Summary: Ill-Informed Observations Review: While there are some good observations in the text, project focus, trust etc. There are also some very poor observations as well. Example: Kaizen and Six Sigma are an "inadvertent obsession with polishing yesterday's paradigm". What dribble. How can we hope to maintain our current customer loyalty if we don't strive to control our variability while we are tearing down old paradigms. Seeking to place blame for our lack of innovation is a direct response to poor management and reward and recognition systems inside our organizations. For this book to suggest and/or blame the lack of inovation in our organizations on continuous improvement and six sigma BREAKTHROUGH strategy is a not only incorrect, but dangerous.
Rating: Summary: Tom Peters is the philosopher-king of business! Review: YEAH!!! I cheered aloud as I read . . . it couldn't be helped! This book is extremely motivating!! Tom Peters speaks the truth about management, business, customers, and value. The text is rich with nuggets of wisdom. It will be a scary read for those who are still perpetuating the mindset of obedient mediocrity, however.
