Rating: Summary: Forensic detail, plot twists, but a bit much Review: At this stage, I kind of know what to expect from Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series: Lots of forensic minutia, some lecturing on the forensic scientist's credoes, and a bunch of last-minute plot twists in case you were falling asleep. This isn't a bad combination; a lot of the forensic material is quite accurate (although, like most forensic novels, the actual efficacy of the techniques described is usually FAR less than Deaver would indicate), and Deaver's protagonists make for an interesting (and, one would assume, enduring) team. The problem lies within Deaver's love of plot twists. After a while, they start getting more wearying than interesting (this was a major flaw with "Coffin Dancer" and is even more exacerbated here). As unsuspected villian after unsuspected villian is revealed, I felt completely numbed. I get more excitement watching the various masks taken off the average "Scooby-Doo" bad guy than reading about yet another "(s)he's in on it too?!" revelation. Another side note, which dropped the book down a notch in my estimate, is the needless pointing out of precautions taken around a bleeding gay man. At this stage of the game, ANY blood should be treated carefully, and the added cautions alluded to by a character (who's supposed to be a friend of the bleeding man, no less) are borderline offensive, at least to this (perhaps overly-PC) reviewer. Deaver's eye for detail is certainly appreciated, and there's some nice dialogue, but I'm not overly impressed. A decent quick summer read (although it's a bit too long for a quickie), not much more.
Rating: Summary: Go get this one!! Review: This was the first Jeffrey Deaver novel I read, and it impressed me so much, I've read two more (Blue Nowhere and Devil's Teardrop) since. There is no way you'll be able to figure out the ending to this without just guessing, and I've found that Deaver's amazing plot twists and fake-outs are his signature. The dialogue is very readable and realistic, but the thing that puts this over the top for me is how he gets you so attached to the characters. I will honestly say I was disappointed when the book ended because I wanted more of Amelia Sachs and Garrett Hanlon. Lincoln Rhyme is a great character as well- likeable yet a jerk at the same time. I really can't find any negatives to this book, and Deaver has gained a fan for life. Read it!
Rating: Summary: OK - one twist to many Review: I like the Lincoln Rhyme novels. I think I am in love with Sachs, but Mr Deaver cannot resist overegging the pudding with yet ANOTHER plot twist and then ANOTHER. In "The Empty Chair", Rhyme and Sachs transplant quite well to South Carolina. Small town attitudes are quite well drawn by Mr Deaver. But Sachs actions are unbelievable, the trial contrived and the last 2 plot twists too much.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking to the end... Review: Perhaps it should be retitled an Amelia Sachs novel. Amelia moves through this story not knowing what to believe. And this was not limited to her case, but her personal life, her career, and her future. Set in North Carolina, both Lincoln and Amelia are like two flies in a beehive. They just do not fit in with the locals. But that does not keep both of them from trying to do the right thing, even at great personal sacrifice. Amelia wants to believe in Garret. She tries so hard, even though those around her tell her it's a mistake. If you enjoy adventures that make you think, you will enjoy this book. The methods for figuring out what really has happened is fascinating.
Rating: Summary: Tedious Review: I might have been able to enjoy this book more had it not been for the glaring errors pertaining to science. I want to know what kind of GC can be set up in ten minutes and then be programmed to run dirt, of all things. Add to that a group of characters who are all just boring as hell. Not on my top ten list.
Rating: Summary: Another Hit!!! Review: This was my 2nd book by Deaver. I skipped the Bone Collector & now will be going back to read it. The movie is good, so the book ought to be incredible! The Empty Chair does not disappoint. Many twists & turns in the plot & you never know exactly what to expect.
Rating: Summary: Not a bad fluff read... Review: I really loved the Coffin Dancer, and have read all of the Lincoln Rhyme books... This was NOT Deaver's best outing. It was almost tritely set up, and the "shocks" really weren't... There was an interesting plot twist, but the ending left me saying "Yeah, so?" If you're looking for a book on the beach, at a picnic or other light fluff reading, this is decent. If you're looking for well written thrillers, this isn't really great.
Rating: Summary: A Real Page Turner Review: One of the most exciting books I have read in a long time! Everytime you think you have figured out "who done it," some new twist is thrown into the pot. I am looking forward to reading more from Jeffery Deaver.
Rating: Summary: Good read! Review: I read The Bone Collector and didn't put two and two together when the film came out. Obviously the book was far better than the film. However, Deaver writes a really good book. I love being taken away and introduced to an environment with which I am not familiar and yet feel like I know it. That is the case with The Empty Chair. The characters are real and vivid. The story is good, but not great and the outcome is satisfying if a bit too formulatic. I'd recommned this book and I'll read others of Deaver's books.
Rating: Summary: guess and check. Review: If I were to summmon one person that I could place in the empty chair and I was to say one thing to that person it would take but a few simple words, "thank you Mr. Deaver". Deaver captured my emotions and altered them as only a true master of manipulation could. I give this one 4 out of 5.
