Rating: Summary: Different Review: I really liked this book, even though it is VERY different from Gail Carson Levine's other books. First and foremost, it is actually set in our world, in a school in fact. Usually, I would have stayed away from a book about a school, but considering the author and the promise of fantastic elements, I decided to try it.I am SO glad that I did. This book in FANTASTIC!!! Unlike most realistic fiction, it never preaches about how terrible cliques and popular people and high school are. Instead, it shows a point of view that is NEVER shown: what it's like inside a clique, and the idea that popular people really DO have the capacity to be nice. I mean, if you want to complain about card-board cutout villains, read a normal realistic fiction book. There was only one really 1-D character in the book, but this added to the realism; I've met a few people who really act like that. Besides, all the other characters were wonderful, so it didn't really matter. Wilma, in most aspects, was a good character. I especially loved the way she managed to pull unpopular people into the group without making it seem forced, which is no easy task. The only thing that seemed slightly odd was the romance, but that was just because of the age. It would have worked better if this had been set in highschool, but given the nature of the wish Wilma makes, that wasn't possible. A certain part of the wish was the only problem in the book; from my point of view, the catch in it seemed rather obvious. But then, I read WAY too much fantasy, and therefore probably understand "watch what you wish for" better than Wilma did. Besides, it wasn't a very big problem, and given that Wilma took two seconds to think about the wish before she made it, it can easily be ignored. If you like fantasy or realistic fiction, you HAVE to read this book.
Rating: Summary: I wish to read The Wish!! Review: The Wish was very funny. It was very exciting and was packed with action. It was a very good book. I think people of all ages will like this book very much. It might not interest teenagers and adults, but I`m eleven and I loved it. The main character, Wilma, is very funny. She seems to love animals a lot. She learns it`s not what`s on the outside, but what` s on the inside that counts. She learns this from Jared, Daphne, and the old lady. The author`s main idea, is to be yourself. If I had to rate The Wish , I would give it 5 stars on a 5 star scale and 2 thumbs up. It`s a rose in a garden of weeds, a TRex in the land of dinos, and a bike in the land of trikes.
Rating: Summary: A very good book, with a very good review Review: To me,"The Wish", By: Gail Carson Levine is a very good book. Its about how a girl named Wilma, who was trying to fit in. She gave her bus seat up for an old lady, and the old lady gave Wilma a wish in return. Wilma's wish, was to be popular. Then, about one week later, Wilma finds out that her wish only works on people at school, and not outside of school. Next year she's going to be in high school, and she's going to lose all of her friends. What should Wilma do? Read and find out. I would also recommend this book to people who likes to read something with excitment, and laughter.
Rating: Summary: "The Wish" by Gail Carson Levine Review: Wilma Sturtz is one of the 'unpopulars' of Claverford Middle School. And ever since her two best friends had moved away, eighth-grader Wilma has been ignored by everyone making her feel alone and invisible. So it's a very big surprise to her when she meets a strange old lady who offers her one wish! Wilma of course asks to be the most popular kid in school. And before you know it, she's the star of school! Everyone loves her, she has forty dates to the Grad Night Dance, gets to hang out with the popular kids, and receives love poetry from an anonymous person. Wilma can't think of any way her life could get any better and forgets that all wishes sometimes has a few loopholes to it. Soon she discovers that her popularity might not last... Ever since I read "Ella Enchanted", I knew I had to read another Gail Carson Levine book. So for my birthday I got "The Wish", which sounded so enjoyable to me. And it was a terrific book, though I give it only 4.5 stars because in my opinion the book could have been a little longer. But it was still great. It's amazing how well Levine was able to describe the life of a 14-year-old so realistically. "The Wish" has a very good lesson to it, giving the reader a real look on the subject about popularity and true friends. Though the book says it's for kids ages 8-12, for me I thought it was more like for girls 12-up.
Rating: Summary: The Wish Review: I read the book The Wish by Gail Carson Levine. Wilma is a teenage girl who is an outcast at Clavorford High School and doesn't have many friends. She met an old woman on the bus and she granted Wilma one wish, Wilma wished to be popular at her school. The next day she was popular and everyone wanted to become friends with her, even the most popular girls in the grade. Wilma wasn't sure if it was just a coincidence or that the wish really worked. She didn't realize that because she was in 8th grade and would graduate soon, school would be over and her wish would be over! She wouldn't be popular for long. Will the wish work after 8th grade or will it stop and be the same way as it used to be? Or will she realize popularity doesn't matter and it's the inside that counts? I thought the book The Wish was alright because I thought there should have been more exciting parts in the book and there should have been more action. But, I did like the book because I thought it taught a good lesson. I can compare this book to a folk tale because they both teach a lesson at the end of the story. The Wish was appealing to me because I liked the way the story ended. The authors style of writing is descriptive and she keeps the story flowing. I liked the way everything connected at the end. I think a person that maybe likes folk tales or that likes to hear a lesson to be learned at the end of a story will like this book. I think everyone would like this book because it teaches you a lesson in life, that would probably be useful.
Rating: Summary: Creative Review: This was a GREAT book. In it, a girl named Wilma is teased and ignored at her school, and has no friends. When she helps an old lady, she gets one wish granted. She wishes to be the most popular kid in her Junior High school. Suddenly she's swamped by kids wanting her attention, and she gets to be real great friends with the popular kids, who in this book are not snoby. Plus she gets a nice boyfriend, and grows to be friends with another not-so-popular girl. Then Wilma starts to realize that kids from other schools don't think she's so great. And she's about to leave junior high and gradute to high school soon!Going to a new school means that kids won't think she's so great anymore. And things will go back to normal, plus her close friends (the popular girls) will think her a jerk. She's only got three weeks till she graduates. How is she going to keep the wish from wearing off? This book is creative, fantical, and it teaches a great lesson about friendship. You should read it.
Rating: Summary: The Wish Review: If you had one wish, what would it be? In the book The Wish by Gail Carlson Levine, Wilma, the main character, wished for popularity. She was given one wish for helping an elderly lady. Without thinking, she wished to be popular at her school which she would graduate from in just a few weeks. This book would appeal most to girls in grades 6-8. The Wish is geared towards young adults so it's easy to read and easy to understand. Since Wilma is in 8th grade herself, many of the readers can relate to her problems and understand how she feels. You need alot of imagination to read this book because it has no pictures or illustrations. The ending is very vague so it's kind of a "create your own ending" book. However, it's very detailed so you can almost see what's going on in your mind. It's a quick read because it's to read and it goes fast because it's so interesting. Girls ages 11-14 who like stories with magic will definately enjoy this book.
