Rating: Summary: Exceptional Review: This book coupled with the audio tape which is not always easy to find is thoroughly engaging for all. I have tested this book in preschool classes with 2-5 year olds of varying degrees of aptitude (including special education children). It has been a hit every time. I wish they would make it into a video. We have created a whole curriculum unit around the theme of this simple, lovable book.
Rating: Summary: Repetitive nature is excellent for beginnig reading. Review: This book is read almost daily to my kindergarten students during the month of October. The repetitive nature of the book allows the student to join in the reading. Those ready are able to pick up words. It's also fun for the children to act out.If you can find the cassette you're even better off.Great sing-song reading.
Rating: Summary: Big Pumpkin is a BIG hit Review: This delightful retelling of the old Big Turnip story is a Halloween favorite of my Kindergarten class. They learn the repetitive lines quickly and love to exclaim "DRAT" with the witch as she patiently watches the ghost, vampire, and mummy fail to yank her big pumpkin from its vine. And when the bat has the winning idea, we learn that cooperation is good for all. We also love to act this book out. A Winner. My suggestion, however, is to AVOID the paperback. Mine fell apart after three readings and is now held together with LOTS of tape!

Rating: Summary: Big Pumpkin! Big Fun! Review: This is a funny, charming Halloween story that introduces some of the traditional frightening monsters of Halloween like a green-faced witch, vampire, ghost, bat, and a mummy but in a non-scary fun-filled way. A delightful old witch plants a seed and grows a huge pumpkin because she has plans for making pumpkin pie. The pumpkin gets so big that she can't get it off the vine and down to her house to make it into a pie. As she struggles, successive passers-by stop to help because they also want some yummy pie. The witch, vampire, ghost and mummy all try using brawn and fail but a clever little bat saves the day with his idea rather than his strength. All the characters are drawn with such a light-hearted and comical approach that there is no scare to them at all, only a funny sense of helpfulness to reach that big goal, a pumpkin pie! You haven't seen a vampire until you've seen one enjoying a bite of pumpkin pie with those incisors and smiling at the same time! Big fun.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Halloween Book and my Kindergarten Students Too! Review: This is absolutely my students favorite halloween book of all time! The cassette tape (available through Scholastic book club) is a must! Every year I look forward to it as much as my students enjoy hearing it. By the end of the season they all know it by heart. It would be great if there was a Big Book! A Halloween must!
Rating: Summary: Big Pumpkin Review: This is my favorite Halloween book I know it so well that I will often just tell the story. It is really funny, it has the typical cast of Halloween monsters with out being scary and its great for reading out loud the kids always love to join in on the "Drat" and the pulling. I would also encourage you to purchase the audio version as it is a wonderful performance that children will listen to anytime of the year.
