Rating: Summary: Big Pumpkin is a BIG hit Review: As a Kindergarten teacher I look forward to Halloween year after year because of this book. The children love it and want to read it again and again. This book would not be complete without the tape. It is repetitive and fun to listen to. The children read/sing right along.
Rating: Summary: Big Pumpkin--the best Halloween read-aloud for preschoolers Review: BIG PUMPKIN by Erica Silverman is my absolute favorite Halloween read-aloud. The story is simple: a witch is trying to pick her big pumpkin so she can make pumpkin pie, but she can't do it. A ghost, vampire, mummy and bat come along to help out. The story is filled with repeating phrases that are great fun: "Drat!" "Hmph!" "It's big and it's mine but it's stuck on the vine, and Halloween's just hours away." The story is entertaining and fun for all ages, but is especially great for sharing at preschool storytimes.
Rating: Summary: It's big and it's mine and it's stuck on the vine. Review: Children love the repetition in the book. It's big, and it's mine and it's stuck on the vine. Read it once or twice and the kids will be reading along with you, too.
Rating: Summary: A great Halloween book that makes it a lot less scary Review: Every night when my three-year-old goes to bed either my wife or I read to her. I love it this time of year because we read this book over and over and never get tired of it.This book features a number of horror icons: a witch, a ghost, a vampire, a mummy, and a bat. But they are all presented humorously as they struggle with the same problem, how to move a huge pumpkin to the witch's house so she can bake pumpkin pie for Halloween? The witch, ghost, vampire, and mummy each take a stab at moving it, only to each fail individually. When the bat shows up, he has the answer. Not only is this tale funny and entertaining, it contains some subtle messages, i.e., size and strength aren't everything, brains are usually better than brawn, and teamwork is the best way to accomplish a daunting task. We read this so much that I just bought a new copy as the old one is pretty worn after a being read on-and-off over the past year. A truly great read at Halloween.
Rating: Summary: A wonderfully written Halloween story for preschoolers! Review: For those who celebrate Halloween, this book is a treat. The audio cassette, in particular, truly captures the essence of the story (in song) of a witch who has trouble picking a pumpkin, (a Halloween version of The Turnip). Her friends; a ghost, mummy, vampire, and bat all help. The result is a picture book with repetition and wit. A must for any school or teacher library.
Rating: Summary: Buy it for the pictures! Review: I am a big fan of S. D. Schindler, whose illustrations are always magical. Yet, somehow it seems that his work gets overlooked in the rush to credit some coy rhymes. The language is fun, certainly, but it's the creepy-friendly faces and forms that make this book a classic.
Rating: Summary: Our favorite book!! Review: I can't say enough about this book. My 3 year old daughter loves to hear it (over and over, naturally!) and I love to read it (yes, even over and over!). The words are simple and repetitive enough that my daughter likes to "read" it as well. Great illustrations, great story, great writing. After reading our copy, I bought one for my neice and my mother-in-law bought one for her preschool class. You can't go wrong with this book!
Rating: Summary: For years!!! Review: I have been reading this book every Halloween for many many years now (I'm 16 now). I love this book, but have lost it, and am glad to know it is here for me to buy. Get it, it's great!!!
Rating: Summary: The kids love it! Review: I have had the book for at least 2 years and my class loves it. If the cassette is available get it. We broke ours because it was used so much. It is in song format and the song will stick with you forever!
Rating: Summary: "It's Big and It's Mine, But It's Stuck On the Vine . . ." Review: I just purchased this book for my 3-year-old and he absolutely adores it. Probably because he can relate to the size of the pumpkin!
One of our pumpkins (her name is Hortense) that we are growing in our backyard is 4½ feet around, about 60 pounds, and is still growing! We go outside every day so he can say "hello" to her.
The artistic rendering of the illustrations done by Schindler is wonderful and the characters are very appealing to youngsters. I just love the "mummy" (who is female and that is a very nice twist) and the bat eating pie.
Overall, my kids love the book and I love the book. This makes it easier when one is asked to read it over and over and over and over again!
