Rating: Summary: Mind Boggling Review: This book takes on the topics of Child Abuse, Murder, Prison Rape and various other crimes. Grace Adams is the victim of all these crimes, but the most stunning of these story elements is the complicity of her parents in horrific sexual abuse. And yet, at no time is there any emotional attachment to Grace as the central character. There is no point at which I felt sympathy for her or outrage for what happened to her. I gave this book 1 star only because no stars was not an option. I think when an author takes on such heavy issues in a novel, the writer has some responsibility to acknowledge the anguish caused by these kinds of crimes to the victims who survive them. Steel has managed not only to avoid real human emotion, but she trivializes it to the point of being offensive. I have read other Steel books, and this one will be the last one I try. There are authors like Stephen King for whom I will suspend belief because the writing is so good that whether or not the events are possible is not of primary importance. I cannot do the same for Steel because the writing does not distract one from the unbelievable passages. Instead it only highlights them.
Rating: Summary: Can't believe my eyes Review: I read this book in two days. It took me two days to read it for several reasons: 1. Once I started it I couldn't wait to finish it so I could move on to something more stimulating. 2. I wanted to see if my eleven year old nephew could write something better. Malice had so much potential for a very good book. Not many authors write about abuse of children and the aftermath of such abuse. I've come to a conclusion: Danielle Steel shouldn't have attempted to write about abuse. I don't know if she is personally familiar with this subject, but in my opinion abused women and children should be offended by how it was handled. The book was very choppy and one of the chapters spanned almost 10 years. Her grammar was horrible. She does pay editors doesn't she? Sentences like "it was all all right" do not belong in a book by a famous author. The book seemed amateurish and thrown together. As a result I will never pick up another Danielle Steel book ever again, unless of course, I need a laugh.
Rating: Summary: Typical Steel Review: I have had this book sitting on my shelf for awhile. I got it from one of those free deals you get when you join a book club.I was going to skip it altogether but then read some of the reviews here. It seems that Danielle Steel readers think this was one of her best, so I decided to try it.If you like Danielle Steel, you will like this book. However, if you like good writing, this isnt the book for you. Danielle Steel is NOT a good writer by any stretch of the imagination. At first the story was a fairly intriguing tale of a horribly abused child, and her struggle to survive and make a life for herself. I found it fairly interesting despite the cardboard characters and tedious writing style. Then of course, we get to the typical Danielle Steel "climax" of the story...The heroine, who has been terribly wronged by someone/everyone, confesses her tragic story to our hero, the wonderful, understanding, boring dufus who is going to make our heroine's life all better now. The heroine spits out her whole tragic history in one long breath, from beginning to end, like she is reading it off of a cue card. Our hero , somewhere in the middle, interupts her once, saying "my God" or something equally profound. Sound familiar? I have read 3 or 4 Steel books in my lifetime and they all eventually come to this point...so poorly written and unbelievable that it doesn't deserve to get repeated in another novel. Yet, this scene was done in all of the 3 or 4 that I have read. Well, this was the point that I threw away the book. I just could not bear another moment of it. I apologize to any of you who love this author, I did not write this to offend anyone. Try reading Barbara Kingsolver if you want to read a contemporary author who can actually write...you will immediately see the difference and going back to Steel will be difficult.Stephen King if you like the genre..that man can write. Danielle Steel just churns stuff out according to a formula and has abandoned any hope of true writing...my honest opinion.
Rating: Summary: Neesah's opinion of malice Review: I feel that malice was a very extravagant book that will fill someones heart with a lot of emotion. The things that the young girl into a women experienced starting with home was a very hard thing for not just a young girl to deal with but any adult also. But she found what she needed at the end and , but he was rigt before her eyes way before then. I only have one question why did she have to serve time the abuse was not punishment anough?
Rating: Summary: VERY TOUCHING!! Review: This is the first Danielle Steel book I've read. It was really easy to "get in touch" with the characters in this book. Great plot, great characters, GREAT WRITING! For some people, the subject matter may not sit well - some parts of the story are graphic in content. You'll definitely need to keep a box of tissues next to the bed while you're reading this one. It brought tears to my eyes. Very touching story but sadly, some people are like Grace Adams in the real world. It really makes you step back and take a look at things like child abuse and domestic violence. The message this book gave to me was, "If Grace Adams can make it through what she's been through, so can I!!"
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly Good Review: Attention! "Malice" may have a message, but it is not "messagey." The novel condemns child abuse and harrassment by the media explicitly--but these messages are secondary. The central theme is the growth and eventual triumph of Grace Adams, a remarkable heroine. Abused by her father as a young girl and taken advantage of by a string of [people] who followed, Grace had every reason to give up and bow out. Instead, realizing that she wanted to help others who went through what she suffered, she let her life go on by giving herself in selfless service. She also learned to overcome a fierce distrust of men, falling in love with and marrying a good, loving man. When her past caught up with them after her husband became a politician in Washington, she fought to tell the truth--though it meant being [violated] all over again by the press. In the end, she overcame everything once more, with the love and support of her family. This book is about second chances, after all, and about rising from the ashes. Danielle Steele was as passionate in her writing as Grace was in her quest to help battered women and abused children. Steele's portrayal of this strong, enduring heroine is extremely powerful. "Malice" is no romance novel or light bildungsroman. Those who expect one of Steele's quainter books will be surprised--and moved. This book can make readers believe, "If Grace can stand up to it all, so can I!"
Rating: Summary: Fast and Beliabable Review: The story moves on very fast. I was really surprised at the beggining of the story when I read the truth about her father.
Rating: Summary: Boring Review: I don't see what's a big deal. This is first D. Steel's book I've read and it was average and shallow. I think this is the first and last of Mrs Steel books I'll read. Trust me, don't buy it!
Rating: Summary: Powerful...... Review: This book was wonderful. I'm a teenager, but I thought that it was powerful. It is a must read! I couldn't put it down! I wanted to know what was going to happen next. As a teenager though I thought that certain areas of this book were inapproiate. But, it was WONDERFUL! Now, my mom's reading it!
Rating: Summary: The greatest modern book by Danielle Steel - unforgettable! Review: That was the first book by Danielle Steel I read, and one that I'll remember until the day I die, since his influence in me was so huge. The story of Grace Adams is wonderful from beginning to end. You cry, you laugh, you be afraid... but most important, you FEEL. It seems that you are there with her, suffering with her when she has problems and celebrating with her when she wins. But what's really interesting is the suspense of the book. It never stops. When Grace is escaping from a problem, another one comes and grab her... until she finds herself in love. But you will see that love doesn't means end of problems, much to the contrary, that they are only beginning. Since I read MALICE, I could never forget Danielle Steel. I discovered that she's not an author only for women. Through her books I discovered all kinds of emotion, good or bad, but everytime I finish reading one of her books, one thing is certain: the sensation of having read another excelent piece of writing. Long life to Danielle Steel! She really deserves all her success she has. Most of her books are unforgetable. MALICE is one of them. Get emotional you too through this book. You'll be another one to find this book one of her best! Marco Aurelio
