Rating: Summary: I just about withered from boredom... Review: I just don't get all this 5 star stuff...what was in this book that had any kind of fire, intellect, spark or plot?I thought it laughable.
Rating: Summary: Flat, paper thin, one dimensional characters Review: This book struck me as being cliched from beginning to end...there was nothing clever or intriguing about the plot...it was all so obvious what was going to happen. The characters were painted were incredibly thin and utterly one dimensional. This is not my idea of worthwhile work.
Rating: Summary: Endearing , well developed characters, wonderful reading. Review: I loved this book so much I picked it for my book club and all of us (6) really enjoyed reading it (which is unusual for us!). Novalee, Forney, Sister Thelma Husband, and the rest of the characters were so beloved (except Willy Jack of course). They taught a lesson which is sorely needed in this day and age of drugs, violence and hopelessness, that love and perserverence can conquer evil and heartbreak. I miss these people already!
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've read!!! Review: This was one of the best stories I have ever read. Just a feel good story about a girl finding her way through life. Obsticles come her way and she finds her own way. I loved it.
Rating: Summary: wonderfully real Review: This is the most heart breaking, and magnificent coming of age story. It can give ANYONE a sense of hope, and gratitude.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring tale of a woman who thought her luck had run out! Review: Novalee Nation is a fabulous character! She is young, but had to grow up real fast! And Forney has such a big heart - it may have taken Novalee a while, but she finally realized what true love is with Forney and even Sister Thelma Husband, Moses, & Benny Goodluck!!! I have raved about this book to many of my friends! It is excellent and easy reading!
Rating: Summary: You know where your heart is. Review: Sometimes, when you open up your newspaper and read about the discouraging events going on in this world, you really need a book to boost your marality up and ensure you that life is still beautiful. "Where your heart is" is certainly the book. Working intricately, Billie Letts actually brings us back to a town where there is no mega-superstore and hippie MTV music. What you can find in store is bundles of endless unconditional love offered by the simple and down-to-earth people. Letts uses the book to call back our own. California might not be the place where you could find happiness and self-satisfaction. Instead, what we have in our hands could indeed be the most valuable possession we have ever had. You don't expect to find car-chasing and gun-churning in this plot. However, you might be surprise to know that reaching out to the unfortunate strangers can be joyful and reciprocative. It is funny and enjoyable reading. Never mind the unbelievable plot and characters. If we want something credible, buy a copy of newspaper. To some people, it is a comfort to find that love still exists.
Rating: Summary: Pregnant girl gets dumped and carries on. Review: The first chapter of this book draws the reader in, but unfortunately, the actual plot doesn't start until page 185 and gets resolved on page 200 and the rest of the books just rambles on with various characters thrown in to take up space. I kept reading to discover what all the fuss was about and was left feeling unsatisfied.
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended. Review: I found this to be a heartwarming and funny story although in a sometimes bittersweet way. I am a true daughter of the south and often it brought back memories to mind of real life people who were so very much like the book's characters and who have played such an important part in my own life. It was so easy for me to see and feel these characters come to life. It was like "being" at home for me. Thanks to Billie Letts.
Rating: Summary: TEACHABLE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL! Review: This book touched me in so many different ways that I decided to teach it to my sophomore english classes. I did worry that the boys would balk at the book, but they have so far absolutely loved the book. I have not heard a negative word about it yet. I can't wait until we get into the discussions.
