Rating: Summary: Heartwarming, but violent Review: I fell in love with the the characters. I found myself crying deeply at many times during this book, from sadness or hapiness. At times I felt renewed in a sense of hope and home. Home... Is where your history begienns. This is a beautifull novel. However, there were some very violent and post-violence scenes, and this book is not for children. I felt sometimes as though this book could have had the violence and all the related parts taken out, and I could give this book to my teenager. If I could simply tear pages out, it might be my favorite novel. If you are mature, this is an amazing book.
Rating: Summary: Great page turner for the beach! Review: I was very impressed with Novalee's perserverance. She always kept a positive outlook and made the best of a bad life, no matter what. I really enjoyed reading this book and I am ready for the next one.
Rating: Summary: Emotionally powerful Review: Every bit as inspiring as the hit of the summer, "The Triumph and the Glory", Billie Letts' "Where the Heart Is" is a superb novel, garced with memorable characters and a style which is a true delight to read.
Rating: Summary: At first a modern Canterbury Tales... Review: while she is still figuring out where to turn after being abandoned at Wal-Mart. It is a warm and fuzzy read about the nature of humans...if you can get past the plight of Brummet. That scene was extremely disturbing and I found it overkill if the author was trying to shed light on blind trust in the hands of an evil spirit. It was an okay book, but Oprah has picked better.
Rating: Summary: An entertaining look at reality for a young woman in trouble Review: This is a rewarding story with an unlikely premise. There are enough strange characters to make it Anytown, USA, but they are distinctly Oklahoman in nature. Letts' writing is deft and compact, and her descriptions leave nothing out. I was enchanted by Novalee and her struggle.
Rating: Summary: This book is life affirming. Review: I expected the story of a small town unwed mother to be trite at best. Instead I found layers and layers of complexity about the human spirit. I will never look at an unwed mother with a bunch of kids in the same way - thanks to Lexie, an overweight woman with a passel of kids who befriended our heroine and helped her milk to flow - what a wonderful metaphor for the best people.Read this and feel connected.
Rating: Summary: Great book!! Couldn't put it down.. Review: This book is uplifting. Funny from the beginning to the end. This is one you must read.
Rating: Summary: mediocre at best Review: Why would I want to read about a 17 year old girl that makes bad decisions and the rest of her disfunctional friends? I can read about this in the newspaper on a daily basis. Ugh. Sorry I wasted my time on this one.
Rating: Summary: Pleasantly surprised Review: I didn't think i was going to care one bit about these characters, but they were totally fascinating. In fact, the longer I think about it after having finished the book, the more I liked it and the characters. Amazing that Novalee truly had hit bottom yet managed to make such a wonderful life for herself and her daughter...maybe good luck *is* all about attitude.
Rating: Summary: Absolutley Amazing! Review: I instantly fell in love with the characters, especially Forny Hull. This book made me laugh, cry, and think. This is one of the best books I have ever read and as a teenager with pregnancy so prevalent among my peers I identified greatly with Novalee. Well done Billie!
