Rating: Summary: You won't be able to put it down Review: I could not put this book down! Billie Letts is an amazing writer. You will be swept into this book by the end of the first page.... Truly, a must read.
Rating: Summary: Good for unsophisticated readers -- maybe Review: Well, yes, Oprah has done the nation a great service by gettinga bunch of TV watchers to actually go pick up a book or two. This is abig deal, and she deserves a lot of credit for making it happen. But like most of her selections (Toni Morrison's extraordinary "Song of Solomon" being one exception), "Where the Heart Is" comes off as a facile read perhaps best suited to getting teenagers and weak readers into a book. Why? It's a fun, lively tale, with enough characters for a Christmas pageant. And it's a Christmas-pageant-y tale, with happy endings for all and lots of walk-ons by characters we never get to know well enough to find them believable. Letts' author's note says this novel began as a short story, and parts of the book would make good short stories in their own right. As a novel, it's thin and often unbelievable. Go ahead, recommend it to those who don't read much and need something light and amusing to convince them that fiction is a good alternative to TV. If you're in search of a richly told tale with real depth...well, hit 'search' again.
Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: I am an avid subscriber to Oprah's Book Club. I have read most of the books in her club, but was thoroughly dissappointed in this selection. I didn't find the book to be suspenseful at all. It dragged on an on. The only thing I was waiting for was for the book to end. Readers beware!
Rating: Summary: A Great and Fun Read! Review: I love Billie's style of characters. She paints a very vivid picture of the characters. I couldn't wait to go back and read the previous Billie Letts book. I am anxiously anticipating the next book.
Rating: Summary: what a wondeful book! Review: i read this book in two days. because i couldnt put it down. Billie Letts is the most wonderful writer.she uses all the imagery posible. and never leves you hanging.
Rating: Summary: Best Book Ever! Review: This was truly one of the best books I have ever read. I enjoyed it from cover to cover. The characters are just that - characters! Each one is someone you wish you had as a friend. (Except maybe Willie Jack!) Thank you Billie Letts!
Rating: Summary: Not bad - a little too trite for me. Review: I felt that most of the characters, though well-developed, werepretty stereotypical - an african-american couple, a native american boy,an elderly woman who has found God. I was also frustrated with the lack of accuracy in some areas, such as when the author spoke about the main character breastfeeding her child. Milk doesn't come in right away, as any woman who has breastfed would know, it takes up to 3 days for that to occur. This inaccuracy alone took away some of the positive feelings I had for the book. I think he did a good job with the characters, however, and liked the development of the protagonist. The dialogue was pretty good as well.
Rating: Summary: a heartfelt and outstanding book Review: not only did i enjoy this book it changed my life
Rating: Summary: Fun, easy, great read! Review: This was a truly heart warming and fun read. The characters are wonderful, and Letts describes them so well. Willy Jack is such a loser that it's funny. The whole story was just very entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Witty, Light hearted look on Little America! Enjoyable Read! Review: I bought this book in the airport in Chicago, figuring it would be something to pass the time for a few minutes here and there on my flight, and then during down time on my vacation. I ended up reading it the whole flight(2 hrs!) and every night before I went to bed! Wonderful wording, and in short a great story teller! BUY THIS BOOK!
