Rating: Summary: Trials can be conquered with education, love and support! Review: Novalee Nation is one of the most memorable characters I have had the pleasure in getting to know. She refuses to let the less than "ideal" circumstances she faces at the beginning of the novel deter her from believing that there is good in the world and that she can experience a fair amount of joy and satisfaction in life. Although Novalee has not made the best decisions in life so far (one wonders how on earth she could get involved with the likes of Billy Pickens)she exhibits a maturity that even she recognizes sets her apart from some of the people she and Billy hang around with. One of the most memorable scenes in the book for me involved Novalee making an "IOU" list of the items she used while a stow-a-way in the WalMart in which she has been staying since Billy left her there! Whenever I open a can of Spam Luncheon meat, I can't help but remember Novalee swearing that one day she would never open this particular item again. It makes me recall how easily we often take even the smallest things for granted. Novalee's triumph over the problems she faces should prove to many that the amount of determination one has to succeed directly influences the outcomes of one's life. Unfortunately, teenagers sometimes make life-altering mistakes (as do adults). Novalee Nation shows us that it is possible to overcome anything life decides to throw at us if we have the determination and will power to do so!
Rating: Summary: WOW couldn't put it down! Review: Picked the book up and couldn't put it down read it in two days! One of the best books I have read in a long time - the story and the characters keep wanting more. I highly recommend it to people of all ages.
Rating: Summary: I got lost in the world Billie Letts created! Review: I read the book in 1998 when Oprah first announced it would be one of "her" books, and loved it! Recently, while at the movies, much to my great pleasure, during the previews of coming attractions, I discover a movie has been of it! So, I decided to read it again. I wasn't disappointed, I still love Novalee Nation and her life. If you like books about small town life, you'll love this one!
Rating: Summary: I never get to the movies, so... Review: ...I decided to buy the book. I always buy books that are movies and i never finish them...well, i finished this one. It was the last copy at my local Waldens and knowing the movie looked good, I bought it. I read it in less than a day. Every single character in this book was interesting and i loved seeing what unfolded for them. I loved how it was a very easy read too...no complex lawyer-like words that no one understands anyway...it was a page turner and i suggest that you read it!
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book of All Times Review: I thought this book was wonderful. Billie Letts did a great job on tying in other plots along with the main character. The book was very interesting and fun to read. I can't wait to see the movie.
Rating: Summary: Beyond horrible Review: This is the worst book I've read so far this year, and I read approximately 3 novels per week. The characters are flat and one-dimensional. All of the "crises" that the protaganist faces are contrived--they serve only to allow her to overcome them. I found the novel to be a candy-coated, sticky-sweet piece of dribble, more appropriately classified in the same genre as a Harlequin Romance. "Where the Heart Is" is yet another reason to steer clear of Oprah selections.
Rating: Summary: Very good..hard to put down Review: This was an excellent book, it kept me interested the whole time. The characters where somewhat unlikely, but that's why books are so fun to read.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining but superficial Review: I read the book in two days time and was interested in what happened to the characters. Novalee was great I loved her, however most every one else had such hiddious things happen to them it was depressing. Willie Jack wasn't a good person but did we really need the description of his brutal prison attack? And poor Lexie, where did all of that come from? Basicly I thought the book was a romance novel with a few male rapes, limbs being severed, tonados and fires and bites being taken out of people thrown in for whatever reason I don't know. I'm thinking I would have moved if all of that happened around me in a few years time! However Novalee was a strong female character and for that 3 stars!
Rating: Summary: Delightful Review: I had read that it was on Oprah's list, so I bought it. From the 1st to the last page I was hooked! It's like nothing I've ever read, just a "feel good" book.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely best book in the world! Review: This is one of the most uplifting books on the market! Billy Letts uses an amazing choice of words to describe the deep feelings Novalee Nation is going through. This is one of those books that is satisfying no matter what kind of mood you're in. By the end of the book, you will feel as if you are part of Novalee's family. You will want to send money to Novalee as much as everyone else did who read and related to this book!
