Summary: The Most Interesting Book I have Read In YEARS!
Review: This book was fantastic, I read it in one week, and truly recommend it to anyone. I picked up the book because the movie was coming out and I just had to read the book before seeing the movie. And it was worth it. I plan on reading the book again. This book, keeps you happy and like you are part of the book, you feel yourself in the book at all times. Letts is a fantastic writer, I wish she had more books out. The book is a turn paging romance with twists and turns and the most fantastic ending that will have you thinking about it far after the book is over. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book, you will not be sorry! Heather

P.S. This book has been translated into 14 different languages, that has to tell you something right there.

Happy Reading!

Summary: A rebuttal for all those flamers of Where the Heart Is...
Review: I noticed a lot of people don't like this book because it's too "sugary sweet," "unrealistic," etc. People don't like the fact that a very down-on-her-luck, uneducated, pregnant-at-17 girl comes to live with all these happy friendly people.

Well, let's try another story then. In this one, a 17-year-old girl (We'll call her Susie because you guys don't like "weird names" like Novalee and Thelma) is abandoned by her loser boyfriend in front of a Wal-Mart. Pregnant Susie is hopeless. With just her $7.77 in change and no options, she tries to make her way to...somewhere, maybe Bakersfield, where her boyfriend is headed. She ends up in a big city and gives birth. She gets to be in a hospital but soon enough she leaves. Boy, I'm sure you all will love that! It is so realistic. None of this nice, heartwarming stuff--it's gritty, hard, cold, cruel. I'm sure you'll praise it for it's "realistic view of life" and such.

Yeah, right. You'll diss it for being a "downer" and complain about how what is America coming to, this trash doesn't belong on our store shelves!

And people complain that the obstacles Novalee faces are only there for her to overcome. Well, yes, hmm, people do tend to at least try to overcome obstacles. Perhaps you would be happier if she never "overcame" the tornado and, becoming depressed, became an alcohol child abuser?

Face it. People like to read books with happy endings, books that fill them with hope and cheer. Authors must cater to the masses. To some extent, they can write what they want, but not really. Oh, yes, they can write about stuff no one wants to read, but there's a consequence to that: it's called "going bankrupt." If you'd rather had Novalee and Americus die or live horrible horrible lives, go write your own novel. People like happiness and hope. Despite some disturbing scenes, Where the Heart Is is, for the most part, an uplifting, hopeful book. That (along with what I considered great writing, but I won't get into my personal opinions) makes people like it. Deal with it.

Summary: A great book--I loved it!
Review: This is definitely a book worth reading! I loved it--I finished it in 2 days (would have been one if I hadn't gone to the mall =)). You know the story, it's in practically all of the reviews. (Be careful--one of the reviews has major spoilers! ) This is an excellent novel. The writing is great, the characters are warm, human, and quite believable. You can't put it down, always wanting to know what will happen next. Novalee's courage and faith is inspiring. The determination and strength and humanity of characters like Sister Husband and Lexie Coop is beautiful. They are all such great characters, and yet so human and believable. It's a great read. Almost everyone would love this book! I highly recommend it.

I also recommend seeing the movie. I saw the movie first. The movie is very faithful to the book, and I think seeing both book and movie gives you a good perspective. The book gives you all the details you can't get from a movie, while the movie gives you the emotion and--I don't know how to say it--just that special something that isn't quite there in a book. Now I'm not saying the book is bad--it's great!--just that reading about something isn't quite as gripping, as intense as seeing it happen before you. Billie Letts does, however, do a great job at making you feel you are really there. Like I said, her writing is great. Where the Heart Is is a book that won't disappoint you!

Summary: Want more reads like this one!
Review: Although I have owned this book for several years, it wasn't until I saw the ad for the movie that I decided I had to read it. And am I glad I did! This is a wonderful read filled with memorable characters. I'm only sorry I gulped down the pages as fast as I did. I would love to read more books with characters like Novalee Nation and some of the others from this book and wouldn't mind finding out what they are doing 10 years from now. Cannot wait to see the movie (only hope it's as good) and read more books by Billie Letts.

Summary: GOOD, LIGHT READING
Review: Billie Letts' cast of characters in Where The Heart Is are so endearing. Each is quirky in their own way but so very loving except maybe for Willie Jack who I disliked immediately. I loved the Wal Mart references and I'm sure the Wal Mart company loved them even more. I would have given this book 5 stars but I felt it got bogged down 3/4 of the way through. If you're looking for a nice, easy, get away from it all read, then this book might be the ticket.

Summary: Everything good but the ending
Review: I really enjoyed this book, but wished it was more of a love story. You have to admire novalee's courage and spirit. I love this book!

Summary: Lovely and Heartwarming
Review: "Novalee Nation, seventeen, seven months pregnant, thirty-seven pounds overweight-and superstitious about sevens..." Billie Letts writes in her novel, "Where the Heart Is," which has been adapted to the big screen and is currently in theaters. "For most people, sevens were lucky. But not for her. She'd had a bad history with them, starting with her seventh birthday, the day Momma Nell ran away with a baseball umpire named Fred. Then, when Novalee was is in the seventh grade, her only friend, Rhonda Talley, stole an ice cream truck...and got sent to the Tennessee State School for girls..."

Needless to say, bad luck is nothing new to trailer park resident Novalee (played by Natalie Portman in the film), who has "never lived in a place that didn't have wheels under it." And unfortunately, bad luck finds her when her no-good boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens (Dylan Bruno), an aspiring musician, abandons her in a Wal-Mart parking lot in unfamiliar Sequoyah, Oklahoma-with only $7.77 in change ($5.55 in the movie, in which Novalee's numeric phobia revolves around the number 5, rather than 7). With no one to turn to and nowhere else to go, Novalee secretly lives in the store until she gives birth to a baby girl named Americus Nation. Mother and daughter receive a small bit of celebrity coverage as "Wal-Mart Baby" and "Wal-Mart Mommy."

The novel and film tell the story of Novalee's transformation from a young, unwed teenage mother to a successful and respectable young woman in Sequoyah, where she makes her home. Along the way, she meets a special family of friends in the wacky and welcoming townsfolk, who contribute to her growth and success, including: Moses Whitecotton (Keith David), a wise, grandfatherly photographer; Lexie Coop (Ashley Judd), a hospital employee who becomes Novalee's "big sister" figure; Sister Thelma Husband (Stockard Channing), a kindly one-woman welcoming committee who invites Novalee and Americus into her home; and Forney Hull (James Frain), the town's "strange," intelligent, and warmhearted librarian.

Willy Jack and his post-Wal-Mart ordeal are reintroduced throughout the story. His downward spiral compared to Novalee's triumph reminds the audience of the importance of tenacity, honesty, and kindness-all three of which Willy Jack does not possess as Novalee does.

"Where the Heart Is" maintains an optimistic mood toward life and the happiness and hardships that come with it. The characters are faced with homelessness, domestic violence, a natural disaster, deaths, and kidnapping. Yet, rather than give up, they push ahead toward a hopefully rewarding outcome-an outcome that will warm the hearts of both readers and viewers.

Summary: The title says it all...
Review: This book is an amazing tale of heartache and hope. The story takes you where your heart takes you in life, and leaves you feeling better for having read it. I appreciate the vulnerability and yet pure human strength that Novalee possesses because of her connections with others, and the faith and trust these connections bring into her life. You won't be able to put this book down.
