Summary: Much Better than I expected
Review: I usually don't like the books that Oprah picks because the heroines tend to be victims, but this one is different. From the first chapter I pulled for this girl (and against her boyfriend), and she wasted little time feeling sorry for herself. Even though horrible things happen, she was not a victim, her friends wouldn't let her be. The theme of getting by with help from friends is uplifting, and the characters ring true.

Summary: Poignant and funny....
Review: Wonderful, heartwarming story of trust, abandonment, love and pain. Sweet little Novalee finds care and love in the simple people of small town Oklahoma. Great fun.

Summary: Unbelieveable
Review: I am definately not an advid reader, but this is the quickest book I have ever gotten through.

The way this book is told it is as though you are there in the pressence on the characters. As Navolee is left at Walmart by her thoughtless boyfriend, as she meets different characters that will help her through the tough times in the town, as she has her baby, as her mother once again portrays her by taking the only money she has to support herself, as she goes though the trials and tributes of raising a child, as she falls in love and almost realizes it too late.

This book would be an advid read for any type of reader, but I would most recomend this book for women, but I am sure that men would enjoy it too, but would not beable to relate to it as much.

Summary: Where the Heart Is
Review: I found this book overly simplistic. I kept waiting for an interesting plot twist or some deeper meaning, but I was never satisfied. I am at a loss to figure out what attracted Oprah and everyone else to this book. It's a quick read, perhaps a good "beach book," but I still don't know what all the fuss is about.

Summary: Read the Book and THEN see the movie
Review: Read this book before you go and see the movie. The book contains so many layers and layers of Novalee and her friends that the movie was not able to even wrap its arms around. This is not the sort of book I read but I was inspired, not overwelmed, with the goodness of heart within the pages. Read. Enjoy.

Summary: It hits 'where the heart is'
Review: This was my second delve into the Oprah Book Club. I heard a movie was coming out, and then I heard there was a book. Since the movie was two months away, I decided to read the book. I picked it up at the bookstore and began reading it. It's the story of 17 year old and not to mention pregnant Novalee Nation, who's on her way to Bakersfield, California with her white trash boyfriend when she announces she has to stop at the Wal Mart nearby to pee. While in there, her boyfriend drives off and deserts her. Though it starts out with a rather depressing premise, Letts writes in a suprisingly humorous way. Her eccentric, witty, and sweet characters all touch your heart, not to mention the little humor that pokes fun at midwesterners and such, for example Novalee has a superstition about the number 7, she's 17, 7 months pregnant etc. I found that some of my favorite characters were the ones most like people who would be someone you would meet, like Forney the librarian ( who's in love with Novalee ), Lexie, Novalee's trouble-with-love friend, and Sister Husband, the eccentric bible toting welcome wagon greeter who takes Novalee in when she has nowhere to go. The thing about this book is that you become so close to each and every character that it's like everytime they come on your hearts are beating in unison! And when the book comes to an end, you realize that the saddest thing is that it's over and you have to leave these wonderful people who you got so closed to.

Billie Letts is a very talented writer, and I really enjoyed this book. It really hits you in all the right places!
