Rating: Summary: Wonderful true to life novel Review: Where the Heart Is, is a wonderful book that is reminiscent of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It is a story of real people in real life situations. If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes, then you are sure to enjoy this book as well.
Rating: Summary: I saw the movie before I read the book... Review: I admit it... I saw the movie before I read the book, but the movie was sooo good I had to read the book... The book is exceptional, but the movie is great! I loved the characters, and the novel was written very well... and it's an easy read... I read it without thinking "I have to hurry and get to the end" it's a very mellow novel and I just took my time reading it... I think alot of readers need to read this book, just to relax and not be too anxious to finish it...
Rating: Summary: A Heartwarming tale.... Review: Billie Letts' book is a wonderfully warm and touching tale of a seventeen year old girl who matures into a loving woman in this beautifully written story...i read it in one weekend and couldn't put it down! It made me laugh and cry- sometimes all at the same time. My only complaint was that it wasn't long enough as i wanted to know more about Novalee and her daughter, Americus, and Forney..plus all the other wonderfully diverse charcters...wouldn't it be great if Sequoyah Oklahoma was everybody's hometown?
Rating: Summary: When you're stuck in the most unlikely situation... Review: ...what do you do? Novalee Nation, who is 17 years old and pregnant, is travelling from Tennessee to California with her boyfriend. Planning to settle down with her boyfriend in California where he is to get a job in the music industry, she is suddenly abandoned by him at a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma during a bathroom stop. When you're in a situation like that, all alone in a town where you know nobody, with only approx. $10 in your pocket, and the clothes on your back, what options do you have? What can you do? Fortunately for Novalee, she meets 3 kindred spirits. Each person aids Novalee in maturing from an uneducated teenager to a loving and confident mother, and provides her with a home. Each person in turn becomes part of her family, something she's never had in her life. The novel starts off with Novalee at seventeen and ends when she is twenty-five. During the timeperiod, she gives birth to her baby at Wal-Mart, and receives a lot of support from the town and nationwide. She also meets a wonderful man and falls in love with him. Where the Heart Is, is a remarkable story. I enjoyed it so much, that I got all my friends reading it. The movie version of the story is not as good as the novel. Read the novel, Ms. Letts has clevery woven a heart warming tale.
Rating: Summary: Where the cliche is Review: I'm not surprised that a book with a cliche as a title would be so full of them. There are funny parts (only in that self-aware white trash way) but overall I was disappointed. It's cute, and nice, and homey. So I guess it fills all requirements. It doesn't stand out to me though. If you've got time, read it. If you have something else, read that instead!
Rating: Summary: overall, very enjoyable Review: I read this book in long, delightful stretches...I couldn't put it down! And when I finished, I felt like I had lost a part of my life. It really pulls you in and even though some of the characters are little bit eccentric (even so far as implausible), the meaning of the book will make you appreciate your home. Although I think some of the book is a little unnecessarily graphic, on the whole the book is very enjoyable and very sentimental. Billie Letts deserves praise.
Rating: Summary: A top-notch book Review: I have read tons of books but none quite like this one. It set the plot in the very beginning of the story and it didn't make you wait. Then the story began to unfold...a story about an innocent girl left with a baby to care for and no home. This book was a wonderful read. Though the book was very thick, I finished it in two nights, bringing it wherever I went. I definitely recommend this book and hope that other people will be able to experience the thrill of reading such an entertaining book.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming story with a happy ending Review: I absolutely loved this book! It held my interest from the first to the last page! The main character, Novalee, was so sweet that I felt my heart go out to her for all that she went through in the story. Each character that touched her life had some mishap of their own but they all made her feel better about herself! Even Willy Jack, her boyfriend that dumped her at the Wal-Mart, did something good for her in the end. I would highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: In my Heart Review: The first time I read this book, I fell head over heels in love with the stories and the characters. An easy read, the heart of this book takes you on Novalee's journey of change--and, as with many books in US history, her journey takes her life and the reader's to a higher sense of family, friendship, and love. Novalee's story is simply told and beautifully executed. I have sold many friends on this book and hope that more will fall in love with the story as I have. I was terrified to see the movie. And, though I was aggravated that they had a glamorous, thin woman (Ashley Judd) playing Lexie Coop, I wasn't dissapointed in the movie. She hit the character on the nose, if not the physical appearance. The flick followed the book closely--cutting none of the heart out of the story. I also have high praise for the CD. Where the Heart is is a winner all around. Humour, love, and friendships to be cherish and well read.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I admit that I watched the movie before deciding to pick up the book. I'm not an avid book reader in general, but because it was such a great movie, I decided to read the book. There are a few discrepancies between the movie and the book, but the book was fantastic. The descriptions were great about Novalee and her adventures in Sequoyah. She had to do a lot of growing up in such a short time period and Letts illustrated that precisely. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
