Summary: I couldn't put it down!
Review: This book was well written and I must say, 10,000 times better than the movie. There is terrific character development and a superb plot. I got so involved with this book that I felt as though I were really there. I felt like I knew these people and got emotionally involved with their lives. It was a hard book to put down and a great read for almost any age. It's heartwarming, it makes you laugh and cry. You won't regret reading this book!

Summary: Couldn't put it down
Review: I am a mother of a two year old and 6 month old, I work fulltime, go to school part time and my husband is always traveling. Still, I read this book in 2 nights. I only slept about 3 hours each of those nights. I couldn't put it down. I can hardly wait for the video to see these characters come alive. I wanted to befriend some of the characters and behead some others! Great writing.

Summary: Wade through the quirkiness
Review: I started out kinda hating this book. The characters were just a bit too quirky-quaint-homespun for my taste. The notion that their very quirkiness was meant to teach us all a "meaningful lesson about ourselves", was transparent from the start.

But, as the story progressed, I found myself really beginning to like Novalee, much as I tried not to. She grew to be such an interesting and accomplished young woman, that I found myself feeling that she'd definitely be someone I could be friends with. (The other characters, sad to say, continued to annoy me throughout the entire novel. Very one-dimensional with obvious lessons to teach: Sister Husband-true goodness; Lexie-mixed-up, insecure & desperately wanting to be loved; Moses & Certain-the difficulties in getting over the loss of a child, and so on...)

I also had a little difficulty wrapping my head around Novalee's developing relationship with Forney, since he seemed like a hopelessly certifiable nut-job at the beginning of the story, but I guess he was able to turn himself around by letting such a self-possessed, stable woman like Novalee into his life.

So I guess my advice would be, if you're like me, and get turned off by hackneyed, eccentric characters, don't give up on Novalee. Her story alone is worth your while.

Summary: I read this book, before I saw the movie! (It is GOOD)
Review: I read the book Where The Heart Is, and I haven't seen the movie yet. I thought the book was a real good written book. I couldn't put it down. The characters in the book were so real. I can't wait to see the movie.

Summary: A Page Turner!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were quite interesting and the author depicted small town life in Middle America amazingly well. Some devices included by the author were quite effective. Certain phrases stuck in the characters' minds and were repeated through out the book. "Where the Heart is" was one of these phrases. These phrases become mantras for the characters and guide their direction on their journey. This story embodies the notion of "living from the heart". Novalee Nation, the main character, lives from her heart as she has little else. The "family" that she cobbles together including a black photographer by the name of Moses Whitecotton, a descendant of slaves, is heart warming. Novalee puts a fine family together and shows us that human beings can flourish when our traditional family of origin is not up to par or is not available to us.

Review: I could NOT put this book down! I was sucked in from page one!

Summary: LOVE CONQUERS ALL THINGS
Review: A superficial ready of this story would reveal a barefoot, pregnant and naive teenager trying to get her act together after being dumped by her boyfriend at Wal-Mart. As far as the world is concerned Novelee Nation is just another statistic of an unwed teenage mother. She deserves what she got (pregnant) due to her stupidity. She made her bed so let her wallow in it. Such an assessment is too simplistic and far off base.

"Where The Heart Is" is not just about a girl who gets "knocked up" and abandoned. Billie Letts does a masterful job in sharing with us the story of the mistakes, miscues and growth of a young naive seventeen year old who moves into maturity. Her condition is a scandel to some but she finds help, affirmation and security from people on the margins of society in the small town which becomes a haven.

Meet Sister Husband, a whacko alcholic who takes Novelee in and shows her what "home" really means. Moses Whitecotten, an old Black man, awakens and refines her love for taking pictures and viewing the world in a new way. Shy Fortney Hull, an eccentric "librarian" opens up to her the vast knowledge contained in books. Novelee learns her lessons well as she navigates through the school of hard knocks.

Throughout the book several issues are raised which young females struggle with in their lives. Low self-esteem, abuse, the inability to say no, obesity and lying are just a few of the many issues raised in the novel in addition to teenage preganancy. You will be amused by the antics of the characters and sickened by the cruelty of some of them. You will feel anger at the irresponsibility and arrogance of the men. This novel reflects the best and worst of ourselves as we deal in relationships. Beautifully written, funny and ironic, Billie Letts has given us a classic for all times.

Summary: Better than the movie!
Review: First off I have to say I discovered this book after seeing the movie which I thought was really great. But after reading the book, while I still like the movie, I found that it leaves out so many of the little things and characters that make the book so charming.

I absolutely fell in love with this book and the great characters in it. In this age of divorce and broken families the book leaves you with new ideas of who family can be. Family is who you make it and not just your 'blood relatives'.

Most people are familiar with how the story starts... Novalee Nation, a pregnant 17 year-old is abandoned by her boyfriend at a Oklahoma Wal-Mart. We then follow her in a journey of discovery as she changes from an uneducated, homeless teenager to a loving and strong woman. The biggest lesson learned being that home is... Where the Heart Is.

Summary: Even better than the movie!
Review: First off I have to say I only found out about this book because of the movie which I thought was great. After having read the book, I still think it was a very well done movie but it leaves out so much of the little things that make this tale so charming.

I absolutely fell in love with the book and it's small town Oklahoma residents. It gives you such hope that in this age of divorce and broken families, the true sense of family is still a need everyone has and can fulfill with those other than your 'blood relatives'.

Most people have heard how the story starts. 17 year-old Novalee Nation is pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend at a Wal-Mart. From there we follow Novalee as she takes the journey from an uneducated, homeless teenager to a loving, strong woman. Along the way she meets the people who take her in as family and teach her that people are basically good, and that home is... Where the Heart Is.
