Summary: Ashia's Review On A Great Book
Review: Where the Heart Is, by Billie Letts, is a touching and well-written novel. It follows the life of a pregnant teenager who has a hard life raising a child and taking care of herself. Novalee Nation is a seventeen year old girl who is abandoned in a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma when the father of her unborn child leaves her there with only a little money. Novalee has nowhere to go so she lives in the store for three months until she has her little girl who she names Americus. She then moves in with numerous people and discovers many interesting things about life and motherhood. She befriends many people such as Forney Hull, the librarian, a blue-haired woman named Sister Thelma Husband, Moses Whitecotton, the Wal-Mart photographer, along with others and discovers what the real meaning of love and friendship is. This book was very touching having many humorous and many serious parts. I would definitely recommend this book because of the combination of emotions that touch your heart and teach many good lessons to women and teen girls. This novel is also very realistic, inspiring, and makes Novalee Nation a good role model for girls to follow because of her strength and determination.

Review: Novalee Nation is a teenage girl who has strong superstitions against the number seven due to bad experiences in the past. She was now seventeen and seven months pregnant, off to California with Willy Jack, the father of her baby. After being deserted at Wal-Mart with nothing but $7.77, Novalee makes herself a home inside the store and eventually makes a top news story, The Wal-Mart Baby. From there, her adventure only becomes more intriguing as she grows from a girl to a woman. Many caring people along the way make it possible for her to live a life she has only dreamed of.
"Where the Heart Is" is a heart-warming, attention drawing book. I recommend this book to a teenage female or even females of all ages who like to read about possible real-life situations. This story is humorous, yet serious at times. It combines many different characteristics such as comedy, tragedy, sadness and laughter. Novalee shows courage, fear, loneliness, and strength. She's a positive role model for women of any age. You can read this story over and over again and not grow tired of it.

Summary: My favorite book
Review: I have probably read this book a hundred times...ever since my mom bought it for me I read it over and over, and loved it even more each time. The movie is also pretty good but is missing some of the key elements that the book has

"Heart"

Where the Heart Is, is a truly heart warming story. The characters are all wise with all the love a person needs. Novalee was abandon at Wal-Mart, seven months pregnant, with no one and on where to go. The people treat her with compassion that she has never known. They are always there no matter what. There are life-changing morals in this novel, you just need to look closely. There was nothing about this book I didn't like. It has wisdom, comedy, tragedy, romance, and much more. The characters seem as though they are real, they act as any real human. Billie Letts really makes them come alive. The events are every day things that happen to every day people. I think all people would like this book. Although I do believe that this book is more aimed towards females. All in all this is a inspiring novel.

Summary: Where the heart is
Review: Where The Heart Is, was heart warming book that I enjoyed very much. Novalee had a tragic beginning but ended up better than I had pictured a 17 year old girl would end up. I was so happy that Forney was always there to help her, along with sister. Forney was like a father type and sister was more like a mother type always helping out when she needed it. I also enjoyed the strong name that she gave her baby, Americus. I also thought that Moses helped her fulfill her dream of becoming a photographer. This book was extremely good for myself and other teenagers to read because it teaches you about so many lessons in life and how to overcome them and be strong. I highly recommend this book to anyone but mainly for teens.

Summary: Where in Oklahoma is THIS???
Review: This book reads like a high school creative writing assignment. It's predictable and not very deep. When I first came to Oklahoma, a woman said to me "[Us Oklahomans]aren't like in Where the Heart is, but we're some of the nicest people you'll ever meet". The movie is cute, but the book is rather silly. Take a vacation to Oklahoma and walk around the Wal-Marts here, it's far more entertaining than the book is.

Summary: Sweet and poignant look at middle America
Review: Thanks to the movie, most readers are already familiar with the most famous scene from this book: a pregnant teenager gives birth in a Wal-Mart. The teenager is Novalee Nation, and the book describes her story from just before the infamous birth to her daughter's childhood years. Over the course of time, we see Novalee develop from that scared young teen to a responsible young woman and caring mother. Along the way, we are treated to watch the unfolding of Novalee's various relationships with others: Sister Husband, the kind but eccentric older woman who takes Novalee in; Benny Goodluck, the child who becomes Novalee's first friend; Moses Whitecotton, the elderly photographer who sees Novalee's potential; Forney, the shy but sweet man who becomes her closest friend; and finally, a reconnection with Billie Jack, the no-good boyfriend who left Novalee at the Wal-Mart in the first place. Letts does an excellent job of both developing the relationships amongst the various characters and portraying Novalee's changes throughout the years. A warm, enjoyable novel.

Summary: You will be o.k.
Review: I really enjoyed this book. Living in a stressing area where pressure to attain a certain salary, job, lifestyle is predominant, it's nice to read a simple book like this. It reminds us that no matter what the circumstance, if you are a nice person and try just a little, that you will be o.k. With or without the fancy suit, house, or car.

Summary: Caution: Do Not Read!
Review: I had heard of the film, "Where the Heart is" and was eager to view it, however, I try to read the book before watching the movie. So I marched into the library, intent on finding it and reading it if possible. After I had read the beginning chapters, I was very disappointed, to say the least. By the time I was half-way through it, I was completely disgusted.
The book has an interesting premise, that is, a teenage girl who is forced to live in WalMart, and also has great deal of potential. However, I was disappointed and disgusted with the presentation. As a conservative Christian, I was bothered by the profanity in the book, and I was appalled by some of the scenes, especially where Willy, Novalee's ex-boyfriend is concerned. They contained things that no human being on earth should have to read. I began skipping the chapters concerning Willy and eventually just closed the book and never picked it up again. A word to the wise: Read at your own risk!
In spite of all this, I look forward to seeing more of Billie Letts' books, (because "Where the Heart Is" was quite well-written), but only if she can clean them up considerably and lose the graphic scenes.
