Rating: Summary: Coming of age story for the down and out Novalee Review: Poor Novalee, seventeen, pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend. Amazingly she lives in the Walmart by night and devours books at the library by day. All the characters in this book are a little over the top. None of the events in the book have much basis in reality. It is enough to start to believe all those bad "southern" jokes that are popular on the internet. The be true to your heart ending wraps it all up in a neat package at the end. This is not a terrific book, but has enough character appeal to help you make it to the end.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: I would definitely read a sequel. I found this book to be uplifting. It beautifully describes the strenghth and tenacity of the human spirit. I am always encouraged by that. I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it! I would highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: wonderfully warm, and down to earth! Review: The characters in this book, especially Novalee, have such a powerful and inspiring personality. They are real people, with real problems. This is definately a book that's hard to put down.Teenage mothers could relate to this story, to help them realize they are not alone. This book is a definate pathway to help us realize where the heart really is!
Rating: Summary: Stupid plot, idiotic names, cop out ending Review: I think this book was really terrible. It was so contrived that you could guess what was going to happen. I found it predictable and boring as well as on the insipid side. I think Oprah can choose better books than this for her book club!
Rating: Summary: Easy read- Fun book Review: I usually enjoy the Oprah books and recieved this one for Christmas. Within 2 days I was done. It seemed like every chapter ended with a cliff hanger and you just had to keep reading. It did have a soap opera quality that was very endearing. But having lived in Oklahoma for 4 years, I truly did believe the people Novalee met could be real. I am recommending this book to my reader friends for a nice, light read.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Review: This book was an easy and enjoyable read. The characters were fun and the escape was refreshing. The best move I made was to buy Billie Letts other book at the same time "The Honk and Holler Opening Soon" It was even better. Now I'm hungry for more books of this kind. Hated to see both of these books come to an end. I would reccomend both of these books by Billie Letts if you're looking for something not too heavy but packs it's own whollop.
Rating: Summary: in the begining there was wit and great imagination. Review: I have lived in oklahoma for most of my fifty years. Also, have owned this book since 1996. It is a first addition and is signed to my husband as a fellow writer. My interest began partly because of this and a TV show. I found the begining to be full of witicism and imagination. I laughed out loud. And during the middle of the book, I became somewhat confused due to the conglomeration of characters. I also think that the heroine, Novalee, is too good to be true. A Miss goody-two shoes. Unfortunatly, the ending left me at a loss. (and I read it several times). I intend to read Ms. Letts other book, soon.
Rating: Summary: Warm wisdom that soothes the soul and lightens the spirit. Review: Ms. Letts' writting style is nicely reminiscent of Pat Conroy's and Ann Tyler's. Her characters are richly explored, perfectly quirky and honestly revealed. The plot twists are many; each compelling and wonderfully blended. A great read!
Rating: Summary: Simply Marvelous, I loved it. Review: I received this book for my birthday on the 27th of December and by the early morning of the 28th I had it finished. I just could'nt put it down. Did they ever catch Billy Briscoe?. Did Novalee and Forney ever married?. I highly reccomend this book to everyone. Thanks, Belinda
