Rating: Summary: One of the Series' Best Review: I have read all of the George mysteries, and this is definitely one of my favorites. I'm happy to see the focus on Havers rather than the unexciting relationship between Lynley and Helen, and I love Taymullah's character. Can't wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully enthralling, compelling, uplifting mystery! Review: What an introduction to the formidable Elizabeth George! No novel I've ever read delivers so much substance, character revelation and breadth of humane vision than "Deception on His Mind". Barbara Havers is a marvel of courageous truth-telling. Worth the whole trip. After I've read all of George's works I'll give up reading fiction. Everything else is from a lesser planet.
Rating: Summary: Ms George Comes through again Review: I resisted reading this book for some time. Havers is not one of my favorite characters. But having read this, I would like to see more of Sgt Havers in the future. I like the character development and the relationships that developed as the story progressed. Very well done.
Rating: Summary: What a bunch of characters! Review: This book is well written, and an exciting mystery. It was my first George novel but I've gone back for more. DS Havers is an interesting blend of tough thoroughness and fuzzy softness. I've enjoyed meeting her.
Rating: Summary: This is one of the best written books by Ms. George! Review: I have read several of the other books in this series, and I must say this is one of my favorites. The description is great and the concerns for immigrants is very realistic. I liked getting to know DS Havers better also. I look forward to the next book by Elizabeth George!
Rating: Summary: elizabeth george can't write fast enough for me........ Review: i came across elizabeth george's novels years ago when a friend was giving one away to a jumble sale and i picked it up because of my love of all things british! I have never been dissappointed with any of her novels and find the characters real and the plots fascinating--Deception on His Mind was no different! I'm waiting for her next arrival! By the way...if you like brit novels like I do and are looking for other great authors of english mysteries and detective stories try Martha Grimes or Minette Walters--they measure up to E.G. and Grimes especially has some particularly lovable characters (i.e., Melrose Plant!)
Rating: Summary: Her usual high standards in a tricky ethnic subject area Review: I am an avid fan of Elizabeth George having read all her prior books but I felt some trepidation when I realized she was tackling the Pakistani immigrant world. Having lived with one step in the Islamic world for years, I've grown used to stereotypical fictional treatment of this culture and religion. But George really did a believable job. My only nit was that the opportunity for the crime was a bit of a stretch. Looking forward to more of Barbara and the return of Lynley from his honeymoon (at long last).
Rating: Summary: --- What was all the fuss about? Review: I love mysteries and was excited to read "Deception on His Mind" after all the great reviews -- especially since I'd never read Elizabeth George before. What a huge disappointment! I found her use of the language awkward and amateurish, (the slang especially seemed very self-conscious) and all of the characters were dismally one-dimensional. The plot was certainly complex and the murderer nobody I had anticipated, but it took a huge suspension of disbelief to accept the solution. George would have done better to have stopped one plot twist earlier. Overall, a big, disappointing waste of time.
Rating: Summary: made me read everything she's written Review: As a study in character and culture, it was excellent. I read and savored it as I learned about a different cultural view. Because of this book I have gone back to read other books by this author as she certainly is a class above most mystery writers who are aiming strictly for a "who-done-it" plot drive piece of fluff.
Rating: Summary: absorbing! Review: I have read every Eliz.George mystery & I must say I enjoyed this one as much if not more than her previous novels. The descriptions of the locales and the characters were spot on. I enjoyed having Lynley, St. James, etc. out of the picture for a change (sometimes just a tad too perfect) and having the focus on the very believable Barbara Havers. Now, if only I knew what became of Salah & Theo?....
